Industrial Ethernet and fieldbus describe related but different parts of an industrial network: “fieldbus” is a broad category, while “industrial Ethernet” refers to Ethernet-based industrial networks and protocols. Neither term alone tells you how a system handles timing, which devices interoperate, or whether existing equipment can migrate unchanged. Those answers depend on the specific protocol, network design, application requirements, and supported features.
What is the difference between industrial Ethernet and fieldbus?
Fieldbus is not one physical networking technology. It is a category of industrial communication networks, with different protocols, media, and architectures. Industrial Ethernet is also a broad category: it describes industrial networks and protocols based on Ethernet, not a single protocol with one set of timing or configuration rules.

ODVA’s DeviceNet example shows why the distinction matters. DeviceNet is a digital, multidrop fieldbus connecting controllers with devices such as sensors, actuators, motor starters, and I/O. It uses CAN at the data-link layer and CIP at upper layers. EtherNet/IP uses the CIP family too, but adapts it to standard Ethernet and TCP/IP. The application services can therefore be related even though the underlying network technologies differ.
That example is illustrative, not a taxonomy of every fieldbus or Ethernet protocol. A useful comparison names the particular protocol, physical layer and media, topology, and real-time mechanism. Calling one option “fieldbus” and another “Ethernet” is not enough to establish that one is faster, more deterministic, obsolete, or a drop-in replacement.

What does TSN add to Ethernet?
Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) is a family of standards and selected configurations for bridged IEEE 802 networks. IEEE describes its aim as deterministic connectivity with bounded latency, low packet-delay variation, and low packet loss. Its mechanisms address different needs, including time synchronization, scheduled traffic, frame preemption, per-stream filtering and policing, stream reservation enhancements, asynchronous traffic shaping, and frame replication and elimination for reliability.
TSN is not an application protocol, nor does the label alone guarantee deterministic behavior. A network must use compatible features and configurations, and be engineered and configured for the traffic and requirements involved. TSN does not by itself establish which controller or field device supports a particular profile, or whether an existing installation can use it without changes.

What IEC/IEEE 60802-2026 specifies
As of October 11, 2026, IEEE lists IEC/IEEE 60802-2026 as an active standard published on June 29, 2026. It selects industrial-automation TSN features, options, configurations, protocols, and procedures for bridges, end stations, and LANs. It also specifies YANG modules for digital data-sheet information and remote procedure calls or actions. The profile narrows choices from the broader TSN family so industrial implementations can use coordinated selections; it does not make every Ethernet device TSN-capable.

| Decision axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Real-time behavior | What cycle time, synchronization, latency, packet-delay variation, loss, and recovery behavior does the application require? |
| Network architecture | Which media, topology, bridges or switches, and segmentation are installed or required? |
| Protocol and device ecosystem | Which controllers, devices, profiles, and application services must interoperate, and what do their documentation and implementations support? |
| Configuration and operations | How are schedules, streams, diagnostics, and network changes configured, monitored, and maintained? |
| Reliability and safety | What redundancy, recovery, safety, and failure behavior is required, and what does the selected system support? |
| Migration effort | Which components can remain, which may need gateways or replacement, and what commissioning, validation, and downtime will be required? |
For any candidate, check the relevant protocol specifications and installation, infrastructure, performance, and troubleshooting documentation against the equipment actually installed. A generic managed Ethernet switch should not be assumed to support TSN or to be suitable for a plant network; verify its specified features and interoperability for the intended design.

Start with the required control behavior and the installed system, not with the assumption that the network protocol must change. A migration may involve a profile change, new bridges, gateways, replacement devices, or staged coexistence; which path is possible depends on specific implementations.

- Inventory the communication path. Record controllers, drives, sensors, I/O, safety functions, field devices, protocol versions or profiles, and the network components between them. Confirm capabilities in device and protocol documentation.
- Write down application requirements. Establish required timing, synchronization, jitter, loss, redundancy, and recovery behavior for each relevant traffic class. Avoid treating “real time” as a single universal threshold.
- Map the installed network. Document topology, cabling and media, bridges or switches, segmentation, configuration, diagnostics, and maintenance practices. Identify which components would have to support any proposed profile or mechanism.
- Check the exact protocol path. For PROFINET, PI guidance refers to the industrial TSN profile, but its distributed specification is guidance from the protocol organization, not itself an industrial standard acknowledged by a standards body. For EtherNet/IP, ODVA’s 2022 paper discussed possible CIP-connection mapping to TSN streams and impacts on bridges and end stations; that discussion predates the 2026 publication of IEC/IEEE 60802 and is historical context, not proof of universal compatibility.
- Assess components and changes. Identify equipment that can remain, equipment needing configuration or firmware changes, and any gateways, replacement devices, or bridge upgrades that may be necessary. Validate support for the chosen profile rather than inferring it from an Ethernet port or protocol-family name.
- Plan a controlled commissioning path. If the design supports it, stage work by machine or cell. Define tests for communication, timing, failure recovery, safety functions, diagnostics, and operations before scheduling cutover; estimate disruption from the actual equipment and plant conditions.
Read vendor migration claims in context
The EtherCAT Technology Group describes an architecture for integrating EtherCAT segments into TSN networks in a whitepaper dated July 30, 2018. Its description says the approach can require an upgrade at the MainDevice and changes to connecting bridges while leaving SubDevices unchanged. This is a vendor architecture proposal published before IEC/IEEE 60802-2026; it should not be treated as a universally validated migration guarantee or applied to systems without checking their implementations.
