The best ultra-compact gadgets are not novelty toys. They replace a projector, carry a working drive, protect valuable data, or eliminate a pocket full of charging cables. Five products stand out for making a deliberate trade-off: each keeps its footprint small while concentrating one genuinely useful capability. The ViewSonic M1 mini handles battery-powered projection; EMTEC’s X205 Mini is the lightest documented portable SSD here; LaCie’s Rugged Mini SSD favors protection and speed; Rolling Square’s TAU consolidates charging connectors; and iodyne’s Pro Mini packs high-capacity, hardware-encrypted storage into a bus-powered enclosure.

1. ViewSonic M1 mini: a projector that fits a four-inch square
What makes it powerful
ViewSonic describes the M1 mini as measuring just 4 × 4 inches, yet it includes a battery rated for up to 2.5 hours. That combination changes where projection is practical. You can show a film in a hotel room, put a presentation on a blank wall, or create a temporary display without taking a conventional projector, mains adapter and extension lead. Its battery is built in, and ViewSonic says the unit can also work with power banks, so a depleted internal charge does not automatically end a session.

A tiny projector still needs a suitable surface, a reasonably dark environment and a sensible viewing distance. The published material for this comparison does not establish brightness, resolution, speaker performance or measured battery life, so those are questions to check against the current regional specification before buying. The important documented advantage is independence from a wall socket and the four-inch-square footprint, not a promise that it replaces a full-size home-cinema projector in every room.

Who should carry it
Choose the M1 mini when the ability to project anywhere matters more than maximum image quality. It is particularly logical for occasional travelers, educators who move between rooms, and families who want a screen for a trip without packing a television. Bring a power bank if your use may exceed the claimed maximum runtime, and test the wall or screen you intend to use before relying on it for a formal presentation.
2. EMTEC X205 Mini: the minimum-carry portable SSD
What makes it powerful
EMTEC specifies the X205 Mini at 69 × 34 × 9 mm and 25 g, making it the lightest documented storage device in this group. It uses USB-C 3.2 Gen 2, the modern reversible connector and a substantially faster interface than older USB storage generations. The result is a drive that can disappear into a laptop sleeve, camera pouch or even a small wallet compartment while still serving as working space for documents, photo transfers or a second copy of important files.
The trade-off
Small size is the point, but it also means you should treat the drive as a component rather than a complete backup strategy. The cited specification does not state capacity, an ingress-protection rating, hardware encryption or a drop test. Transfer speed in real use will also depend on the computer, cable, file sizes and operating system; USB-C describes the connector shape, while USB 3.2 Gen 2 describes the interface capability. Use a cable rated for the required data speed and eject the drive properly before unplugging it.

Who should carry it
This is the clear choice when grams and cubic millimetres matter most. Students can move a working folder between machines, photographers can offload a card when a laptop is full, and commuters can keep a compact second copy of essential files. If your priority is physical protection or encrypted capacity rather than minimum weight, one of the larger storage options below is a better match.
3. LaCie Rugged Mini SSD: protection for fast travel storage
What makes it powerful
Apple’s listing for the LaCie Rugged Mini SSD combines a USB 40Gbps interface with Thunderbolt 4 compatibility, read speeds up to 2000MB/s and capacities up to 2TB. Those specifications target demanding transfers such as video projects, large photo libraries and system images. The drive is also rated IP54 for dust and water resistance, giving it a defined level of protection when a workspace is dusty or exposed to splashes.
The trade-off
IP54 is protection against limited dust ingress and water splashes; it is not an invitation to submerge the drive or leave it exposed to heavy rain. The listing does not state the enclosure’s weight or dimensions, so it cannot be declared the smallest or lightest option here. The “up to 2000MB/s” figure is a peak published read claim, not a guarantee that every computer, cable or workload will sustain that rate. Thunderbolt 4 hosts and USB 40Gbps hosts can also differ in how much performance they deliver.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Who should carry it
Pick the LaCie when your portable drive will travel between studios, offices, sets or outdoor locations and you want a published resistance rating alongside high throughput. It suits a creator who needs more reassurance than the X205 Mini offers, while the stated 2TB ceiling is easier to manage than an unbounded archive. Keep a separate backup: resistance to dust and splashes does not protect against loss, theft or file corruption.
4. Rolling Square TAU: three charging connectors in one small carry
What makes it powerful
Rolling Square’s TAU is a compact power bank with built-in USB-C, Lightning and Micro-USB cables, plus a magnetic dock. Its practical innovation is cable consolidation. Instead of packing a battery and three loose leads for a phone, earbuds, an older accessory or a second person’s device, you carry one object whose connectors are already attached and stored with it.
The trade-off
The cited product information does not state the battery capacity, dimensions, output wattage, recharge time or protection ratings. That missing information matters if you need to recharge a tablet, a laptop or several devices in sequence. Integrated leads are convenient, but they are less replaceable than a loose cable, so inspect the connectors and the cable jackets before a trip. Confirm that the connector you need is present and that your device’s charging requirements are within the current TAU specification.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Who should carry it
TAU makes sense for everyday carry, short trips and shared households where connector clutter is the main annoyance. It is especially useful when your devices span USB-C and Lightning, or when you still own Micro-USB accessories. Select a conventional high-capacity power bank instead if your priority is maximum wattage, multi-port charging or a clearly documented energy capacity.

What makes it powerful
iodyne lists the Pro Mini in 4TB and 8TB capacities, with USB4 and Thunderbolt connectivity, a 131 × 69 × 13 mm chassis and a 231 g weight. It is bus-powered, so a compatible host can provide operating power through the data connection rather than requiring a separate mains adapter. The differentiator is security: iodyne specifies hardware-enclave encryption, placing protected data in a dedicated hardware security design rather than relying only on a software password layer.

This is a premium-sized solution, not the minimum-carry SSD. At 231 g it is much heavier than the 25 g X205 Mini, and the enclosure takes more room than a thumb-sized drive. USB4 and Thunderbolt hosts, cables and operating systems must all line up to realize their intended performance, while bus-powered operation still draws energy from the computer or other host. The published capacity choices are substantial, but the cited information does not provide an independent speed test, a drop rating or an IP rating.

Who should carry it
Choose the Pro Mini when capacity and protection of sensitive material outrank absolute lightness. It is a logical fit for editors, developers, researchers and consultants carrying active projects or regulated data between locations. Before deployment, verify that your computer supports the required USB4 or Thunderbolt connection and that your organization’s encryption and key-management policies accept hardware-enclave storage.
Why the DJI Power 1000 Mini is a useful boundary case
DJI’s Power 1000 Mini shows how quickly “small” changes when the job is supplying serious power. DJI lists 1008 Wh of capacity, 1000 W maximum output, approximately 11.5 kg of weight and dimensions of 314 × 212 × 216 mm. It uses LFP cells rated for 4000 cycles and includes a retractable 100 W USB-C cable. Those are impressive capabilities for a portable power station, but the dimensions and weight put it well outside normal pocket carry.
That distinction is useful when choosing gear. The five core examples are compact enough to live in a daily bag or travel pouch; the DJI belongs in a vehicle, campsite, production kit or emergency-power plan. Treat it as a larger-than-pocket comparison, not as a sixth tiny gadget.
How to choose the right tiny gadget
Choose by the job, not by the smallest measurement
- Need a screen anywhere: choose the ViewSonic M1 mini and plan around surface, ambient light and battery runtime.
- Need the lightest file shuttle: choose the EMTEC X205 Mini, provided your host has USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 support and you do not require documented ruggedization or encryption.
- Need faster, tougher working storage: choose the LaCie Rugged Mini SSD when IP54 protection and Thunderbolt compatibility fit your workflow.
- Need fewer charging accessories: choose Rolling Square TAU when its three integrated connector types match your devices.
- Need high capacity with hardware security: choose iodyne Pro Mini, accepting its greater weight and host requirements.
- Need to run appliances or a whole work area: move up to a power station such as DJI’s 1000-class model; it is not an everyday pocket device.
Check compatibility before packing
- Identify the ports on the host device, not just the connector shape. USB-C can carry different data and power standards.
- For storage, confirm the computer’s USB, USB4 or Thunderbolt generation and use a cable rated for that interface.
- For the projector, test the power bank, expected runtime and available wall or screen in advance.
- For TAU, check every device’s connector and charging requirement, especially if one device is older Micro-USB hardware.
- For encrypted storage, verify that the security model works with your operating system and your organization’s recovery process.
- Keep irreplaceable files in at least one additional location. A tiny device is easier to carry, but also easier to misplace.
What the published specifications do—and do not—tell you
The makers’ pages and Apple’s listing establish the dimensions, interfaces, capacities, protection claims and battery or power figures quoted here. They do not establish independent laboratory performance, long-term reliability, current street pricing, stock availability or affiliate-program status. Read “up to,” “maximum” and cycle-life figures as manufacturer claims under specified conditions. Check the current regional product page for warranty terms, included cables, operating-system support and any revisions before purchase.
Tiny technology is most useful when its limitation is understood in advance. The M1 mini gives up cinema-scale hardware for battery-powered projection; the X205 Mini gives up documented ruggedness for a 25 g carry; LaCie spends more space on protection; TAU trades connector flexibility for unspecified capacity details; and iodyne spends weight and price budget on capacity and hardware security. That is why these gadgets feel surprisingly powerful: each one concentrates a larger product’s most valuable function into a form you can actually keep with you.
