A custom Apple Wallet pass can hold user-visible details, machine-readable barcode or NFC data, links and app-oriented metadata. Apple documents a signature that helps validate a pass package, but that is not evidence that every field is encrypted or private. Treat pass contents as potentially readable or copyable unless the specific feature provides a documented protection.
What information can a custom Apple Wallet pass store?
Apple Wallet passes represent items such as boarding passes, event tickets, store cards, coupons and generic passes. Their format combines a pass description and data in pass.json with images and, optionally, localized text. The selected pass style determines the layout and which fields it supports. Apple’s Wallet passes overview and pass-building documentation describe the package and its structure.

Visible fields and supporting details
Depending on the pass style, fields can show an issuer, ticket or boarding information, passenger or seat details, rewards balances, terms, contact information and other custom text. Back fields can carry longer explanations than the front. If a layout does not have room for a custom value, it may appear as a standalone field rather than in the intended position. Apple’s pass field reference describes the supported metadata.
Pass data can also include identifiers and serial numbers, locations and relevance dates, links, associated apps, and web-service or authentication-token settings used for pass updates. What is supported depends on the pass type and configuration; these operational values are not necessarily displayed to the user.

Custom app metadata
A pass can include userInfo, a JSON object for a companion app. Apple’s reference says it is not displayed to the user and gives examples of app-specific preferences such as a café customer’s favorite drink and sandwich. That makes it useful for app workflows, not a secure place for passwords, payment secrets or other information that must remain confidential. Apple’s pass reference documents this field.
Barcode and NFC payloads
A pass can carry one or more supported barcode payloads. A common design is to put a unique identifier in the code and have the issuer’s server look up the current record, rather than putting the entire authoritative record in the barcode. Apple describes that as a design pattern in its archived PassKit guide. A barcode is meant to be scanned, so assume its payload can be read by anyone who can scan it.

Compatible passes can also use an NFC Value Added Services payload. Apple’s schema requires a public encryption key for that protocol, limits the message to 64 bytes and provides requiresAuthentication to require authentication for each use; Apple says its default is false. NFC pass support requires a special Apple entitlement. These are controls for the NFC interaction, not protections that automatically apply to every field in the pass. See Apple’s NFC pass documentation.

Is a custom Apple Wallet pass secure?
There is no accurate blanket yes or no. Apple’s build process creates a manifest by hashing the package’s source files and makes a detached PKCS #7 signature with the private key associated with the pass identifier’s signing certificate. That supports validation of the signed package; Apple’s cited build instructions do not describe the signature as encryption of the JSON or its custom fields. Apple’s pass-building documentation explains the signing process.

Think about each field according to how it is used: text on the pass is visible, barcode data is designed to be scanned, and userInfo is intended for companion-app use even though it is not shown on the pass face. Apple’s cited documentation does not establish a general claim that every custom field is encrypted at rest, nor does it provide a complete threat model for all pass data. Do not treat “not displayed” as “secret.”
Can someone share or copy a pass?
The sharingProhibited property hides the Share button on the back of a pass. Apple says it does not prevent sharing by other means, so it is a control over the Wallet interface rather than a guarantee that the pass cannot be copied or disclosed. See Apple’s sharingProhibited reference.

How to design a pass with less exposure
- Keep visible fields minimal. Include only the information a person needs to use the pass; do not put confidential details in text that appears on its face or back.
- Keep barcode payloads minimal. Where the workflow allows, use an opaque identifier and look up the current record on the issuer’s server. The identifier itself remains scannable, so avoid making it a credential that grants access on its own. This is the lookup pattern in Apple’s archived guide.
- Use
userInfoonly for app-oriented data that need not be secret. Its absence from the normal pass display does not make it a protected vault. - Choose NFC authentication deliberately. If the use case requires authentication for each NFC use, configure
requiresAuthenticationand implement the Value Added Services protocol correctly. NFC support also requires Apple’s entitlement; see Apple’s NFC documentation. - Do not rely on a hidden Share button as a security boundary.
sharingProhibiteddoes not stop other sharing methods, as Apple notes in its property reference. - Assess pass generators separately. Apple’s format documentation describes pass capabilities and developer controls; it does not establish how a particular third-party service stores, processes or shares the data you give it.
