To set up parental controls for AI chatbots, configure each provider separately and use family or device settings to block apps and websites you do not want a child to access. ChatGPT offers an account-linking option with selected settings and limited safety notifications; Microsoft Family Safety can block Copilot and selected chatbot apps or sites. Neither approach automatically covers every chatbot, device, browser, or account.
Choose the right kind of control
There are two useful layers: controls built into a chatbot account, and controls applied through a family group, device, app, or website filter. Account linking can adjust particular features within one service. Blocking through family or device settings can restrict access to selected apps and sites, but you must configure the relevant devices and child accounts. A setting in one chatbot does not supervise other chatbot services.

Set up parental controls in ChatGPT
A parent or guardian can invite a teen, or a teen can invite a parent. The account link is required before the parent can manage the available settings. OpenAI’s setup instructions are in its Managing parental controls in ChatGPT guide.
Parent or guardian sends the invitation
- On the web, open the profile menu and choose Settings.
- Select Parental controls, then Add family member.
- Invite the teen by phone number or email and send the invitation.
- The teen must open the link and accept it.
- After acceptance, return to Settings > Parental controls and select the teen under Family members to review or change supported options.
Teen invites a parent or guardian
- Open Settings > Parental controls.
- Choose Invite a parent and send the invitation.
- The adult must accept the invitation before the accounts are linked.
What the linked account lets a parent manage
Available options include reducing sensitive content, choosing whether conversations may be used to improve models, managing saved-memory reference, certain ChatGPT Work network and cloud-browser controls, and setting Quiet hours. Options and defaults can vary by region and availability; for example, saved-memory reference is enabled where available but may be off by default in some regions.

Quiet hours are configured in the parental-controls page by choosing a start and end time; more than one time block can be added. During a quiet-hours block, the teen cannot use ChatGPT, including ChatGPT Work.
What parents cannot see, and how unlinking works
Linking does not reveal a teen’s conversations, chat history, or live activity. Safety notifications are on by default after linking, but may take a few hours to begin; they are limited and do not include conversation transcripts. Either person can unlink the accounts. If the teen unlinks, the parent is notified and can no longer manage settings or receive safety notifications. When the account leaves the Teen experience at age 18, parental controls and teen notifications end.

OpenAI says that teens who identify themselves as under 18, or are predicted by its age-estimation systems to be under 18, are placed in ChatGPT for Teens by default. Parents can link accounts to adjust features, set time limits, and customize available safeguards. These are ChatGPT-specific product provisions, not controls for other chatbot services. Block Copilot and other AI sites with Microsoft Family Safety
Microsoft says parents can use Family Safety or device settings to block the Copilot app or browser, set allowed-use times, and choose which features are available, such as image generation, voice, group chat, or AI companions. Some controls require adding the child to the Microsoft family group. Microsoft’s app-blocking instructions describe these steps:

- Select the child or family member in Microsoft Family Safety.
- Under the child’s Windows tab, find Copilot in Apps, features, and games and choose Block app. Block relevant browsers as well if the aim is to prevent web access.
- Open Web safety and add copilot.microsoft.com to Blocked sites.
- In the Family Safety app, select the family member and block the app. Then open Web and search > Content filters > Blocked sites to add the site block.
- Repeat the relevant app and site restrictions for every family member, device/platform, and browser that needs them.
Microsoft lists these additional AI sites parents may consider blocking: chat.openai.com, claude.ai, gemini.google.com, huggingface.co/chat, otter.ai, and perplexity.ai. Add only the sites relevant to your family’s needs, and check which web address or app the child uses; a site block will not by itself block a separately installed app.
Check the Copilot version and account type first
Microsoft’s Microsoft Copilot for Young People guidance has a version boundary: an updated Copilot app became available on August 18, 2026, and the older-app article directs users of the updated app or web experience to newer guidance. The related Family Safety instructions apply to personal Microsoft accounts, not work, school, or organizational Microsoft Entra accounts. Confirm that your app version and account match the guidance before relying on a particular menu or control.

Make the controls part of a family plan
- List the chatbot services, apps, browsers, devices, and child accounts in use; configure each provider or block separately.
- Check that the child is signed into the account covered by the family settings and that relevant browsers and apps are included.
- Explain what the controls do and do not let a parent see. For ChatGPT, account linking does not provide chat-history access.
- Pair software settings with clear family rules and ongoing conversations about responsible AI use. Robbie Torney, Senior Director of AI Programs at Common Sense Media, described parental controls as a starting point that work best alongside family conversations, clear technology rules, and active involvement in a teen’s online life, in OpenAI’s announcement introducing parental controls.
The documented setup uses account settings and family-safety software; no specific physical purchase is needed. Current setup guidance for Google Gemini’s Family Link controls and Anthropic Claude’s own parental settings is not established here, so do not assume that the ChatGPT or Microsoft steps apply to those services.
