A bean-to-cup coffee machine stores whole coffee beans, grinds them inside the machine and brews a drink from the grounds. You add beans and water, select a drink, and the machine handles the main steps. Milk preparation and cleaning vary by model, so the label does not mean every machine works the same way.
What “bean-to-cup” means
In a bean-to-cup machine, the normal workflow starts with whole beans in an onboard hopper, not a dose of pre-ground coffee. An integrated grinder prepares the beans for brewing, and the machine’s brewing system makes the selected drink. The category includes machines with different controls, brewing-unit designs and milk options. Philips describes its range as bean-to-cup machines, while Smeg’s guide shows the bean-and-water workflow for its BCC models: Philips bean-to-cup machines and Smeg user guide.

“Fully automatic espresso machine with grinder” is another useful description, but automation has limits: the machine can take care of grinding and brewing without necessarily making a milk drink automatically.

- Add water and beans. Fill the reservoir and put whole beans in the hopper. Smeg’s instructions for its BCC machines recommend fresh water and explain grinder adjustment for those models.
- Choose a drink and position a cup. Select an available beverage on the machine’s controls. Depending on the model, you may also be able to adjust strength or volume, or save preferences.
- The grinder prepares a dose. The machine grinds beans and transfers the grounds to the brewing group. On Gaggia’s Brera, the manufacturer describes the brewing group as dosing and tamping the ground coffee.
- The machine brews. Its integrated system heats and moves water through the coffee to prepare the selected drink. The exact settings and internal design are model-specific, rather than a single standard shared by every machine.
- Handle milk if the drink needs it. Some models have an integrated milk system; others use a steam wand or a different arrangement. Philips describes LatteGo on compatible machines, while Gaggia lists a pannarello steam-wand solution for the Brera. Check how the specific machine prepares and cleans milk drinks.
- Clear and clean as required. A machine may rinse automatically or show cleaning prompts, but you still need to empty and clean parts such as the drip tray and grounds container according to its instructions.
Parts that shape the experience
| Part | What it does | What varies |
|---|---|---|
| Bean hopper and grinder | Stores whole beans and grinds them for brewing. | Grinder materials, adjustment options and controls differ by model; no one design is established as best for everyone. |
| Water reservoir and internal brewing system | Supply and prepare water for the drink. | Capacity and engineering details depend on the machine; there is no single category-wide specification. |
| Brewing group | Receives ground coffee and carries out the brew process. | Access, removability and cleaning method vary. Follow the manual for the exact model. |
| Controls | Let you choose a beverage and, on some machines, change or save drink settings. | Available drinks and customization depend on the model. |
| Milk system | Prepares milk for drinks such as cappuccinos or lattes. | It may be integrated, a steam wand or another arrangement; automatic milk preparation is not universal. |
| Drip tray and grounds container | Collect wastewater and used coffee grounds. | Access and cleaning instructions differ; Smeg’s FAQ discusses care for these components. |
For examples of the differences, see Philips’ UK range page and Gaggia’s Brera product page.

Cleaning is part of the routine
Automatic rinses and prompts can help, but they do not replace the model’s maintenance instructions. Depending on the machine, routine care can involve emptying the drip tray and grounds container, cleaning the milk parts and rinsing the brewing group. Periodic descaling may also be required. The right interval and products depend on the machine, water conditions, filters and its alerts; use the manufacturer’s guidance rather than a universal schedule.
Brewing-unit directions are not interchangeable across brands. Smeg says the brewing unit for the models covered by its FAQ should be washed under running water and not put in a dishwasher. Bosch’s instructions for the brewing unit covered by its US support article say to rinse under warm running water and warn against detergent, vinegar or acids, and dishwasher cleaning. Follow the directions for your own machine, not another brand’s procedure: Smeg coffee-machine FAQ and Bosch: How to Clean Your Brewing Unit.

What to check when comparing machines
- Milk preparation: Find out whether the machine has an integrated system, a steam wand or no built-in milk option, and what cleaning each arrangement requires.
- Brewing-unit access: Check whether the unit can be removed and what the manual says about rinsing or other care.
- Grind and drink controls: Compare grinder adjustment, available drinks and the strength or volume settings you can change.
- Everyday access: Consider where the water reservoir, bean hopper, grounds container and drip tray are located, and whether you have room to reach them.
- Maintenance guidance: Check the machine’s cleaning prompts, descaling instructions and any filter-related requirements before choosing it.
These are practical differences documented in manufacturer materials, not a ranking of machines. For example, Philips publishes product-specific claims of at least 20,000 cups of grinder life and up to 5,000 cups before descaling under stated filter-replacement and usage qualifications. The Philips page gives no publication year; those figures are claims for applicable Philips products, not independent or category-wide guarantees. See Philips’ UK product category page for the relevant product details.
