What Breaks When You Disable Core Isolation’s Memory Integrity in Windows?

Turning off Memory integrity may let a blocked driver load after a restart, but it does not guarantee the device or app will work—and removes an important security layer.

Turning off Memory integrity may let a driver that Windows blocked load after you restart, but it does not guarantee the device or app using that driver will work. The certain tradeoff is security: Windows loses the Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (HVCI) protection layer. On a Secured-core PC, switching Memory integrity off also takes the device out of its Secured-core state.

What “Core isolation” means—and which switch you are changing

“Core isolation” is a section of the Windows Security app, not one single protection switch. Its options can vary with your Windows version and installed hardware. The setting most often involved in driver warnings is Memory integrity, also known as Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (HVCI). It requires hardware virtualization to be enabled in UEFI/BIOS.

Microsoft describes Core isolation as providing security features that protect core Windows processes by isolating them in memory. Memory integrity uses hardware virtualization to protect itself and make it harder for malicious programs to exploit low-level drivers and hijack the PC. Turning off Memory integrity removes that layer; it does not automatically turn off every other Core isolation feature or all Windows driver checks. Microsoft’s Device Security documentation explains the terminology and feature availability.

What can happen to your device or app

A blocked driver may load

If a warning says a driver cannot load because of Memory integrity, switching the setting off and restarting may allow that particular driver to load. That can restore a function that depends on it, but success is not assured.

The device or app may still fail

A camera, adapter, storage device, backup utility, or other product can remain unusable if its driver itself is faulty or the problem comes from another Windows policy or compatibility issue. Disabling Memory integrity removes one possible obstacle; it does not repair or update a driver.

The security protection is reduced

With Memory integrity off, malicious code has an easier opportunity to interfere with or evade this safeguard. Microsoft does not quantify the individual risk as a percentage, so there is no sound basis for assigning a probability of compromise. The change removes a protection layer; it does not mean an infection is inevitable.

Secured-core PCs lose that state

Microsoft warns that turning off Memory integrity on a Secured-core PC takes the device out of a Secured-core state. The consequences of an incompatible driver can range from negligible to severe, depending on the device and software. Microsoft’s driver warning guidance covers this tradeoff.

Try these steps before turning Memory integrity off

  1. Identify the driver. Record the driver file name and publisher from the Windows warning; Microsoft says these are the reliable details shown in the notification.
  2. Look for a compatible update. Check Windows Update and the device or driver manufacturer’s support channel for an updated driver.
  3. Consider removing the affected product. If no compatible driver is available, removing the device or the app that uses it may be an option. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Weigh the remaining tradeoff. If the function is essential and no update exists, you can use the Memory integrity toggle in Windows Security under Device security > Core isolation details. Turning it off requires a restart. Consider the lost HVCI protection and, on a Secured-core PC, the loss of Secured-core state before proceeding.
  5. Test the specific function after restarting. Check whether the device or app actually works; a changed toggle alone does not show that the driver or product is functioning correctly.

Do not confuse Memory integrity with the vulnerable driver blocklist

Windows’ vulnerable driver blocklist is a related but distinct protection. Blocking a driver can cause a device or app to malfunction and, rarely, a stop error; that compatibility evidence does not establish that disabling Memory integrity is a universal fix. Microsoft’s blocklist guidance describes the security and compatibility tradeoff.

Two documented examples illustrate why the conditions matter:

  • Microsoft’s display-driver upgrade hold concerned Windows 10 version 2004 with HVCI enabled. It was specific to that upgrade, not proof of a general present-day problem. Microsoft’s version 2004 notice describes that case.
  • In an April 2026 notice, Microsoft said certain third-party backup applications using psmounterex.sys might fail to mount or manage disk images after updates released on or after April 14, 2026, when the vulnerable driver blocklist is enabled. That named driver, app, update timing, and blocklist condition do not make switching off Memory integrity a universal remedy. Microsoft’s April 2026 notice gives the specific scope.

How to decide

Memory integrity Security effect Compatibility possibility
On Retains the HVCI protection layer described by Microsoft. May block an incompatible driver.
Off Removes that HVCI protection layer. May allow the blocked driver to load after a restart, but does not ensure its device or app works.

If a driver is the issue, prefer a compatible update or removing the affected product over permanently lowering protection. If you temporarily switch Memory integrity off because the function is essential, verify the result after restart and treat the change as a security tradeoff—not as a guaranteed repair.
