What Bitcoin Liquidations Are and How They Affect Traders

A Bitcoin liquidation is the forced closure of a leveraged futures or perpetual position when the collateral supporting it no longer satisfies the exchange’s maintenance-margin requirement. The venue’s risk engine, not the trader, decides when and how to close the position. Ordinary, unleveraged spot Bitcoin ownership does not use this liquidation process.

What are Bitcoin liquidations?

When you trade a Bitcoin futures contract or perpetual contract with leverage, you control a position larger than the cash you deposited. That deposit is margin. The exchange also requires a minimum amount of remaining equity, called maintenance margin, to keep the position open.

Your position’s equity changes as Bitcoin moves. An adverse move creates an unrealized loss, reducing the buffer above maintenance margin. If the applicable threshold is crossed, the exchange takes control of the position and submits closing orders. This is liquidation.

Binance describes its trigger as collateral plus realized and unrealized profit or loss falling below maintenance margin. Bybit describes isolated positions as liquidated when the mark price reaches the displayed liquidation price, while cross and portfolio modes use an account maintenance-margin ratio that can reach 100%. Those are venue-specific implementations, not one universal Bitcoin formula.

Liquidation is different from voluntarily closing a trade. The trader does not choose the timing, order type or final execution price, and the position can lose the chance to benefit from a later recovery. In a normal spot purchase made entirely with your own funds, a falling Bitcoin price does not automatically close your coins because there is no derivatives maintenance-margin requirement.

How the liquidation process works

  1. Margin opens the position. You post initial margin for a leveraged long or short. The contract’s notional value can be many times larger than that deposit.
  2. The venue calculates ongoing equity. Unrealized profit or loss, realized profit or loss, fees, funding and other account factors affect the equity supporting the position.
  3. Maintenance margin sets the minimum buffer. The exchange applies a maintenance requirement to the position, account or portfolio, depending on the margin mode and contract rules.
  4. An adverse move shrinks the buffer. A falling trigger price hurts a long; a rising trigger price hurts a short. Leverage makes the loss large relative to the original margin.
  5. The risk engine takes over. Once the venue’s liquidation condition is met, it attempts to reduce or close the exposure. Some systems use staged or partial liquidation; others may close the entire position.
  6. Post-liquidation handling follows venue rules. Open orders may be canceled, liquidation fees may be charged, and a deficit may be handled through an insurance fund or auto-deleveraging system.

These steps can happen extremely quickly in a volatile market. The exact sequence, thresholds and order handling are defined by the contract and the exchange’s current rules.

Why was my Bitcoin position liquidated?

Long positions

A long position profits when Bitcoin rises. A sufficiently sharp fall in the relevant trigger price creates losses that consume the position’s margin. At the maintenance threshold, the long is liquidated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short positions

A short position profits when Bitcoin falls. A sufficiently sharp rise produces the adverse loss and can trigger liquidation. The direction is reversed, but the margin logic is the same.

Leverage reduces the room for error

Leverage magnifies gains and losses by the same basic proportion. A small percentage move in Bitcoin can represent a much larger percentage change in the margin supporting a highly leveraged position. There is no reliable rule such as “a position is always liquidated after a 5% move.” Initial margin, maintenance tiers, fees, funding, mark price, account mode and other positions all change the result.

Illustrative 20x example

Binance’s educational illustration uses opposing BTC/USDT perpetual positions, each with 1 BTC of notional exposure and 20x leverage. Under that example’s assumptions, a $55,000 entry produces a displayed liquidation price of $50,200 for the long and $59,750 for the short. A fall toward the long’s threshold harms the long while benefiting the short; a rise toward the short’s threshold does the opposite. These figures demonstrate direction and mechanics only. They are not a universal formula or a current market quote.

What is a liquidation price?

The liquidation price is the displayed price level at which a venue estimates that its liquidation condition will be met. Kraken calls the displayed figure “an estimate of which mark price level can trigger a liquidation.” It is conditional on the contract, margin mode, account balance, maintenance schedule, fees, funding, open positions and the exchange’s current risk parameters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not a guaranteed execution price. In a fast market, the mark price can jump across the displayed level before the liquidation order fills. The final fill can therefore be better or worse than the displayed trigger, depending on liquidity and the venue’s process.

Term Meaning Why it matters
Liquidation trigger The venue-specific condition that transfers control to the risk engine. It may be a mark-price level, a position margin test or an account maintenance-margin ratio.
Liquidation price A displayed estimate of the trigger level. It can move as equity, positions, fees and risk parameters change.
Execution price The price at which the closing order actually fills. Fast markets and limited liquidity can create a difference from the trigger.
Bankruptcy price The level at which the position’s available equity is effectively exhausted. The exchange may liquidate before this level and may use backstop procedures if a deficit remains.

Mark price versus last traded price

The last price is the most recent trade in the contract. The mark price is a calculated reference intended to represent a fairer value and reduce liquidations caused by an isolated, abnormal trade.

Binance says its mark price combines funding information with prices from a basket of spot exchanges and uses that mark price for unrealized profit or loss and liquidation calculations. Bybit likewise states that, in the margin modes described in its liquidation FAQ, the mark price is the trigger reference instead of the last traded price. Binance Support’s wording is explicit: “Your liquidation prices and unrealized PnL are calculated based on the Mark Price.”

Because the references differ, the price shown on a chart may not be the price that activates the liquidation engine. A brief spike in the last traded price might not trigger liquidation if the mark price stays away from the threshold; conversely, a mark-price move can reach the trigger while the last price on your chart appears safer.

Why did liquidation happen before my stop loss?

A stop-loss order only protects against the condition and execution rules attached to it. If your stop is triggered by last price but liquidation uses mark price, the mark price can reach the liquidation threshold first. Bybit documents this exact mismatch: the platform may liquidate before a last-price stop condition fires.

Check these settings on the specific venue and contract:

  • Which price source triggers liquidation: mark, last or another reference?
  • Which price source triggers your stop-loss?
  • Is the stop a market order or a limit order after triggering?
  • Is there enough available liquidity for the order to fill?
  • Does the position use isolated, cross or portfolio margin?

A stop-loss is not a guarantee against liquidation. To create a buffer, traders generally need the stop trigger and the venue’s liquidation reference to be understood together, rather than assuming that a visible chart level will always be reached first.

Isolated, cross and portfolio margin

Isolated margin

Isolated margin assigns a defined amount of collateral to one position. Losses normally consume that allocation rather than the entire account balance. The displayed liquidation price is therefore tied closely to that position’s margin, size and maintenance requirement.

Cross margin

Cross margin allows eligible account equity to support multiple positions. A losing Bitcoin trade can draw on gains or unused margin elsewhere, which may delay its individual liquidation price. However, losses in other positions can reduce the shared buffer and bring liquidation closer.

Portfolio margin

Portfolio systems assess a group of positions together, often taking offsets and correlated exposures into account. Kraken’s documentation describes portfolio-value or margin-equity tests for its specified contract types, while Bybit describes an account maintenance-margin ratio for cross and portfolio modes. The exact calculation is platform-specific.

Contract design also changes the mechanics

Comparison What to examine
Linear versus inverse Kraken documents different liquidation mechanics for these contract types. Check whether profit, loss and margin are settled in a stablecoin, fiat currency or the underlying asset.
Perpetual versus dated futures Perpetuals have funding payments and no scheduled expiry; dated futures have an expiration or settlement rule. Both can be liquidated, but their calculations differ.
Position size tiers Maintenance requirements can rise as notional size moves into a higher risk tier.
Single-position versus portfolio assessment Isolated contracts focus on allocated margin; cross and portfolio systems assess broader account resources.

What happens after the exchange starts liquidating?

Partial or full closure

Some venues first reduce position size to lower the maintenance requirement. If that is insufficient, they may continue toward full closure. Whether partial liquidation is available, and in what order, depends on the exchange and contract.

Fees and canceled orders

Liquidation can include a venue-defined fee. Open orders may be canceled so they do not consume margin or add exposure while the risk engine is closing the position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Insurance funds and auto-deleveraging

If a position becomes bankrupt and the closing process leaves a deficit, an exchange may use an insurance fund. If that fund is insufficient, an auto-deleveraging (ADL) mechanism can reduce profitable opposing traders’ positions. Binance describes this sequence for its own futures protocol; it should not be treated as universal.

How venue rules differ

Axis Why it matters
Trigger reference Mark price, last price or an account ratio determines when the engine acts.
Margin mode Isolated, cross and portfolio modes change which collateral supports the trade.
Contract type Linear and inverse contracts calculate exposure and settlement differently.
Liquidation style Partial reduction, full closure and order-cancellation policies vary.
Backstop policy Fees, insurance-fund coverage and ADL rules affect the final outcome.

Comparing only two displayed liquidation prices can be misleading. Compare the trigger reference, margin mode, contract specification, maintenance tiers and backstop policy, and read the current rules for the exact product and jurisdiction.

What historical data says about liquidation frequency

A 2021 paper, “Liquidation, Leverage and Optimal Margin in Bitcoin Futures Markets” (arXiv:2102.04591), studied a historical sample of BitMEX Bitcoin perpetual futures. Its figures are scoped research results, not live market statistics or predictions for an individual account.

Finding in the study Scope and qualification
3.51% average daily forced-liquidation percentage for longs Measured relative to open interest in the study’s sample.
1.89% average daily forced-liquidation percentage for shorts Measured relative to open interest in the same historical sample.
About 60x average leverage among liquidated traders The paper estimates 58.13x for longs and 59.94x for shorts; this does not describe contemporary traders generally.
Margin levels associated with a modeled 1% daily margin-call probability Approximately 33% margin (3x leverage) for longs and 20% margin (5x leverage) for shorts under the paper’s model and historical data.

The study’s margin figures are analytical results, not recommended leverage settings. Market structure, exchange rules and trader behavior can change substantially over time.

How to investigate a liquidation

  1. Identify the exact contract. Record the symbol, linear or inverse design, perpetual or dated status, and settlement asset.
  2. Check the margin mode. Confirm whether the position was isolated, cross or portfolio margin and how much collateral was available.
  3. Review the trigger reference. Compare the venue’s mark-price or last-price chart with the liquidation event timestamp.
  4. Separate trigger from fill. Note the displayed liquidation price, the actual execution prices, fees and any slippage.
  5. Inspect account-wide effects. In cross or portfolio mode, review other positions, funding, realized losses and open orders that changed available equity.
  6. Read the current venue rule. Maintenance tiers, liquidation fees and ADL procedures can change, so use the product documentation in force when the event occurred.

Ways to reduce liquidation risk

  • Understand the maintenance-margin schedule and the position-size tier before opening a trade.
  • Keep a buffer between the planned stop level and the venue’s estimated liquidation level; the required distance varies by contract and account mode.
  • Monitor mark price, not only the last-price chart, when the venue uses mark price for liquidation.
  • Account for funding, trading fees and liquidation fees when estimating available equity.
  • Avoid treating cross margin as free protection: another losing position can consume the shared account buffer.
  • Use alerts for margin ratio, mark price and available collateral so you can act before the risk engine takes control.
  • Review the exchange’s insurance-fund and ADL rules so you understand what can happen if a position becomes bankrupt.

No setting eliminates liquidation risk in a leveraged derivatives position. The only way to remove this specific forced-liquidation mechanism is not to hold a leveraged position subject to maintenance margin.
