What Are the Practical Applications of Quantum Entanglement?

Quantum entanglement has potential uses in secure key distribution, networked sensing and quantum computing, but maturity varies and a global quantum internet is not yet a general-purpose service.

Quantum entanglement is a resource used in research and development for quantum communication, sensing, and information processing. Its practical role is to help quantum systems share information or measurement correlations—not to send messages faster than light. Some quantum sensing and quantum-key-distribution work is moving toward real-world use, while large-scale quantum computers and a global quantum internet still depend on substantial hardware advances.

What entanglement contributes

Two or more quantum systems are entangled when their joint state links their measurement outcomes in ways that cannot be explained as independent states. In quantum technologies, researchers prepare, control, distribute, and measure such states to perform tasks that ordinary devices cannot perform in the same way.

Entanglement is not a complete technology by itself. A working application also needs suitable sources, detectors, control systems, protocols, and—when systems are separated—reliable links. The value and maturity of the result depend on the specific task and implementation.

Where quantum entanglement may be used

Quantum communication and key distribution

Quantum key distribution (QKD) uses quantum states to help two parties establish a shared cryptographic key and detect certain attempts to observe the communication channel. Entangled photons are one way to implement QKD; other approaches use individual photons. NIST describes quantum cryptography in terms of monitoring a channel for eavesdropping, not as a blanket guarantee that every system is secure. NIST’s quantum network overview discusses the research and technologies involved.

QKD distributes key material; it does not replace every part of a secure communication system. Security depends on the protocol’s assumptions and on correct hardware and implementation. Calling quantum communication “unhackable” overstates what the technology establishes.

Quantum networks

A quantum network aims to connect nodes by distributing quantum states or entanglement. Potential uses include linking quantum processors, enabling specialized communication, and coordinating measurements at separated locations. These are research and development goals, not a general-purpose quantum internet service available to everyday users.

Long-distance links face a basic engineering problem: photons can be lost in transmission, and an unknown quantum state cannot be perfectly copied to make up for that loss. Network research therefore involves photon sources and detectors as well as quantum memories, repeaters, transducers, and protocols. NIST describes these enabling technologies and notes that network applications remain under development. NIST: Quantum Networks at NIST

Quantum sensing and metrology

Quantum sensing uses carefully controlled quantum systems to measure physical quantities. Entanglement can provide shared correlations that help in particular measurement schemes; it is one resource among several quantum effects, not a guarantee of better performance in every sensor. NIST identifies sensing and spectroscopy as application areas for quantum information science. NIST: Quantum Information, Sensing, and Networking

Networked sensors could also use shared quantum resources to measure quantities such as electric fields, magnetic fields, or temperature at multiple locations. Whether that approach is useful outside a laboratory depends on the application, required precision, operating environment, and the reliability of the equipment. A laboratory demonstration alone does not establish a broadly deployable sensor. NIST: Applications of Quantum Networks

Quantum computing and simulation

Entanglement is part of how quantum information processors represent and manipulate relationships among quantum bits. It can be important in quantum computing and in simulations of quantum systems, where the goal is to study problems that are difficult to model with classical methods.

Entanglement alone does not make a computer useful or prove that it outperforms a classical one. Reliable hardware, control, error management, and the ability to scale remain major challenges. The 2025 review “Challenges and opportunities for quantum information hardware” characterizes quantum computing as still requiring hardware breakthroughs; it does not support claims of routine industrial advantage. Imaging and clocks

Quantum imaging and quantum clocks appear among the broader application areas identified by the UK Government Office for Science. That classification does not mean entanglement is essential to every device in either field. In practice, the role of entanglement must be assessed for the particular design and measurement task. How close are these applications to everyday use?

Progress differs by application. A 2025 review describes quantum sensing and key distribution as moving toward real-world applications, while identifying quantum computing, entanglement-enhanced sensing, and a global quantum internet as areas that still need hardware breakthroughs. That is the review’s assessment, not a claim that all systems in the first group are widely deployed or that all research in the second group is at the same stage. TU Delft repository record for the 2025 Science review

Single photons are important to quantum communication and computing, but producing photons with the required wavelength, timing, indistinguishability, and rate remains a technical challenge. These practical constraints help explain why a successful experiment is not automatically a robust network or commercial product. Nature Reviews Physics: Applications of single photons to quantum communication and computing (2023)

What entanglement cannot do

  • It cannot send a message faster than light. Entangled measurement outcomes are correlated, but using them to communicate still requires ordinary communication channels.
  • It does not make every communication system secure. QKD can help detect eavesdropping under the relevant protocol assumptions; the full system’s security also depends on implementation.
  • It does not automatically improve every measurement or computation. The benefit is application-specific and depends on controlled hardware and a suitable protocol.

Practical applications at a glance

Area What it handles Role of entanglement Maturity and constraints
Quantum key distribution Establishing cryptographic key material and checking for certain channel interference One possible way to encode correlated quantum states; single-photon methods are also used Moving toward real-world applications, according to a 2025 review; protocol and implementation determine security
Quantum networks Sharing quantum states or connecting network nodes Can provide shared states or correlations between nodes A global quantum internet remains a future capability; photon loss and enabling hardware are significant challenges
Quantum sensing and metrology Measuring fields, temperature, and other physical quantities Can contribute correlated resources to specific measurement schemes Some sensing work is moving toward real-world applications; performance and deployability are application-specific
Quantum computing and simulation Processing quantum information or modeling quantum systems Part of the resource structure of quantum information processing Scaling and hardware reliability remain major challenges; entanglement alone does not demonstrate practical advantage
Quantum imaging and clocks Imaging tasks and timekeeping Not established as essential to every device in these broad categories Listed in the UK Government’s 2016 taxonomy of quantum-technology applications; that taxonomy is not a current deployment assessment
