Researchers prepare pairs of quantum systems, measure each system using selected settings, and compare the results for patterns of correlation. A Bell test checks whether those correlations exceed a bound that local-realistic models must obey; entanglement witnesses and state characterization offer other ways to certify entanglement.
What an experiment measures
There is no single detector reading that says “entangled.” An experiment records measurement outcomes—such as photon detections or readouts of ion states—over many trials. Researchers then analyze how the results on one system relate to results on the other.

The method depends on the question. A Bell test asks whether observed correlations are compatible with local-realistic models under the test’s assumptions. Other certification methods ask whether measurements are consistent with a target entangled state or allow researchers to estimate the state itself.

- Prepare a pair. A source creates two quantum systems in a shared state and sends them to separate measurement stations, commonly called Alice and Bob.
- Choose measurement settings. Each station measures its system using one of the settings available there. In the CHSH arrangement, each side has two settings and two possible outcomes.
- Record many outcomes. The experiment repeats the preparation and measurement, recording results for the different pairs of settings.
- Calculate correlations. Researchers combine the results into a Bell statistic. For CHSH, local-realistic models satisfy a bound of 2, while quantum mechanics permits values above 2.
- Assess the result and assumptions. The observed statistic and its uncertainty are evaluated alongside the experiment’s design, including how it handles detection and the separation of measurement choices and outcomes.
A result above the relevant Bell bound is evidence against local-realistic explanations that satisfy the test’s assumptions. It is not a direct image of entanglement: the evidence is the statistical pattern across trials.

What a Bell violation does—and does not—show
A statistically significant Bell-inequality violation rules out local-realistic models within the assumptions of that particular experiment, and in the relevant setting it certifies entanglement. The conclusion should stay tied to the protocol: different tests can involve different inequalities, assumptions, and ways of treating missed detections.
Detection inefficiency can create a detection or fair-sampling loophole if the detected events are not representative of all trials. Experimental designs therefore need to account for detection and for the timing and separation of setting choices and outcomes. NIST’s account of the 2015 photon test describes high-efficiency detection as important to avoiding fair-sampling corrections; its overview places that experiment among three 2015 tests that closed significant loopholes. That does not mean every experiment closes every loophole.

A Bell violation is not evidence of a usable faster-than-light messaging channel. It reveals nonclassical correlations and limits which models can explain them; it does not let an experimenter control one outcome to transmit a message.

Entanglement witnesses
A witness uses a selected observable or set of measurements to distinguish a target entangled state from separable alternatives. The method can be tailored to a particular state or experimental question, so its conclusions depend on the witness and measurements chosen.

State tomography
Tomography measures a system in multiple bases to estimate its density matrix. Researchers can then apply entanglement measures or criteria to that estimate. This approach can require substantial measurement data and, like witness methods, is distinct from a Bell test’s comparison with a local-realistic bound.
Certification becomes more challenging as experiments move from two qubits to many-body or high-dimensional systems. The appropriate method depends on the system, target state, available measurements, and assumptions, as surveyed in Nature Reviews Physics.

How measurements differ by platform
| Platform | What is measured | Important comparison factors |
|---|---|---|
| Entangled photons | Polarization or another photonic property is measured at two stations; detections are compared by setting pair. | Detection efficiency, source quality, separation and timing of choices and outcomes, and whether the analysis relies on fair-sampling assumptions. |
| Trapped ions | Researchers prepare ion internal states, manipulate them with controlled operations, and read them out; correlations across settings are evaluated. | Preparation and readout quality, available control operations, number of settings, and whether the procedure is a Bell test or another certification method. |
| Other systems | Measured observables depend on the platform and the target state. | Number of parties, Hilbert-space dimension, measurement count, and the assumptions available to the certification method. |
NIST describes the general Bell-test setup as two entangled particles sent to separate measurement stations in its Taking Measure explainer. For photons, analyzers select measurement orientations and detectors record events; for trapped ions, researchers control and read out the ion qubits.

How to interpret a reported result
A Bell parameter is meaningful only alongside its inequality, protocol, uncertainty, and assumptions. For example, a NIST report published in 2001 gives a trapped-ion Bell signal of 2.25 ± 0.03, compared with a local-realistic maximum of 2 for that signal. It is one experiment’s result, not a universal entanglement score or a scale for ranking all experiments.

NIST’s discussion of the 2015 photon experiment explains the role of detection efficiency in avoiding fair-sampling corrections: NIST’s report on the test. A Bell result should be read as evidence under a defined experimental design, not as a context-free score.
