On a standard QWERTY keyboard, the home row is the middle row of letters. The eight home keys are A, S, D, F for the left hand and J, K, L, ; for the right; they are the usual finger-rest positions in touch typing. G and H sit in the same row but are not among those eight resting keys.
Which keys are the home keys?
In the standard touch-typing arrangement, each finger rests on one of eight keys:

- Left hand: little finger on A, ring finger on S, middle finger on D, and index finger on F.
- Right hand: index finger on J, middle finger on K, ring finger on L, and little finger on the semicolon (;).
The home row is the whole keyboard row containing A through the semicolon, including G and H. The term “home keys” usually refers specifically to the eight finger-rest keys, not every key in that row.
Where do G and H fit?
G and H are between the left- and right-hand groups. In the taught allocation, the left index finger reaches G and the right index finger reaches H. They belong to the physical home row, but they are not the index fingers’ default resting positions.

How do you find the home position by touch?
Many keyboards have small raised marks on F and J. Feel for those bumps with your index fingers, then place the other fingers on the keys next to them: D, S, A to the left and K, L, semicolon to the right. The marks help you locate the position without looking; not every keyboard is guaranteed to have them. The University of Colorado’s home-row lesson describes the F and J marks as touch guides.
How do fingers use the home row?
In touch-typing instruction, fingers move from their home positions to reach other keys and return afterward. This gives the typist a reference point for the keyboard. It is a taught technique, not a requirement that every skilled typist use an identical motion or a guarantee of a particular typing speed. The CBSE Class IX Information Technology textbook specifies returning each finger to its home key after pressing a key in another row.

What is a comfortable starting posture?
An ERIC-hosted lesson on learning the home row recommends slightly curved fingers, fingertips resting lightly on the home keys, and wrists held low and off the keyboard rather than palms resting on it. Rest a thumb on the space bar; the preferred thumb can depend on handedness.
