Special function keys are keys that trigger an action, such as changing volume or screen brightness, instead of entering a character. On laptops, the term most often refers to the F1–F12 row, which can carry a standard function and a secondary function printed as an icon. Which one a direct press triggers depends on the model, the Fn key, and the Fn Lock setting. In software, the same key can also mean something different.
Two meanings of “special function key”
In everyday keyboard use, the phrase describes a hardware feature: a key that performs an operation rather than typing text. Developers use “special key” in a different sense, to describe a code that software receives for a non-text key. The two meanings overlap but do not describe the same thing, so it helps to separate them before deciding which applies to you.

How the F1–F12 row can do two jobs
The top row of most full-size keyboards is labeled F1 through F12. On many laptops, the same keys also carry small icons for actions such as volume, brightness, or wireless control. Lenovo’s keyboard-shortcut documentation for the ThinkPad T490s and X390 describes these keys as invoking either the special icon function or the standard function, depending on settings. The same documentation states: “The special keys on the keyboard help you work more easily and effectively.”

The standard function is the ordinary F-key behavior that applications and operating systems expect, such as F1 for help in many programs. Whether a direct press reaches this function or the icon function depends on the keyboard’s settings, covered below.

The icon-printed secondary function
The icon is a hardware shortcut. It is usually reached by holding the Fn key while pressing the F-key that carries the icon. Printed icons are the clearest sign that a laptop has secondary functions on its function row.
The Fn key and Fn Lock
The Fn key is a modifier. Holding it changes what the other key does. On the ThinkPad T490s and X390, Lenovo documents that Fn Lock determines which role a direct F1–F12 press plays. The behavior is summarized in the table below.

This table reflects Lenovo’s documentation for those two ThinkPad models only. Other laptops may use the opposite default, a different key for Fn Lock, or no Fn Lock at all. Check your model’s keyboard-shortcut documentation for the key that toggles Fn Lock, since its placement varies.

SAP ABAP Workbench
SAP’s documentation for special function keys and function codes, written for ABAP Workbench version 7.40.26, assigns F1 to field help and F4 to input help within that environment. Those assignments describe that workbench only.
Apple AppKit event handling
In Apple’s AppKit developer documentation, the NSEvent.specialKey property provides a code for a function key or another special key that an app receives. This describes how software represents key events. It is not a guide to what a key does for an ordinary user.

How to tell which meaning applies to you
Answer these four questions for your keyboard and application:
- Default behavior: Does a direct F-key press produce the standard function or the icon action on your laptop?
- Fn Lock: Does your model have Fn Lock, and which key toggles it?
- Printed actions: Which icons are actually printed on your keys? Printed icons, not general lists, are the reliable guide for your model.
- Handled by hardware or software: Is the action built into the keyboard, or is it assigned by the application you are using?
What is and is not established
There is no single universal mapping for special function keys, and no standard definition that fixes which action each key performs. The examples above are tied to named Lenovo ThinkPad models and to specific software environments. Treat them as illustrations of how these keys work, not as a rule for every keyboard.
