Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

An avatar sits in a side panel, four stats wear down over time, saves, commits and bug fixes earn experience points, and boss encounters appear when your editor or repository has problems. It is a game layer on top of your work. Its own Marketplace listing does not claim it makes anyone more productive, and I found no independent study of its effects.
What the game tracks
The panel shows an avatar with four stats: Focus, Motivation, Energy and Health. The Marketplace listing describes all four as decaying, which is what gives the loop its pressure. Experience points come from saving files, making commits and fixing bugs. Commits also award Coffee Beans. The listing names virtual upgrades such as an Ergo Chair and a Mech Keyboard. These are in-game items, not hardware you buy.

Focus sprints
Focus sprints run for 15, 25 or 50 minutes. According to the listing, a running sprint gives 1.5 times the normal XP and a completion bonus. Cancelling early forfeits that bonus, so the sprint is a timed commitment inside the game rather than a free pause button.
Bosses tied to your code
The most distinctive design choice is that bosses are triggered by real editor and repository state rather than random encounters. The listing describes the following triggers:
#1 Best Overall
- The Original Tamagotchi digital pet in a stylish Rainy Angel shell design allows you to feed your character, turn lights on/off, play with it, give it medicine, flush after it has used the bathroom, check its health meter and praise your Tamagotchi Angel character
- A tapping feature is also included! Tap the shell to bring your Angel Tamagotchi character back from a stroll. Or use the tap feature to scare off a bat that tries to steal candy
- With Angel programming play the Shooting Star mini-game to keep your Tamagotchi Angel character happy!
- How you nurture your Obaketchi Angel (ghost character) will determine which Tamagotchi Angel character you will get. There are 5 adult Tamagotchi Angel characters, plus secret characters
- Comes with 1 Tamagotchi device on a chain to take with you everywhere. Battery (CR2032) included. For Ages 8+
| Signal in your editor or repository | Encounter described in the listing |
|---|---|
| Active lint or build errors | A boss tied to the errors |
| Unresolved merge conflicts | A boss tied to the conflicts |
| An open file longer than 300 lines | A code-smell boss |
The listing also gives a 10-minute idle threshold among its numeric settings. It does not say more about how that threshold changes the game state, so check the settings panel once installed.
Getting started
- Open the Extensions view with Ctrl+Shift+X on Windows and Linux, or Cmd+Shift+X on macOS. Search for DevGotchi and install it, or install it from its Visual Studio Marketplace page.
- Open the Command Palette with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows and Linux, or Cmd+Shift+P on macOS.
- Run
DevGotchi: Open Panel. The avatar and stats should appear in a side panel.
This article does not pin a version number, release date or install count. Those details change, so read them on the Marketplace page before you install.
Rank #2
- The Original Tamagotchi digital pet you loved back in 1997 is back with the original programming! Feed it, turn lights on/off, play with it, give it medicine, flush after it’s used the bathroom, check it’s health and discipline your Tamagotchi if he bothers you when he’s happy, fed and all cleaned up
- Includes Character game where you have to guess which way the Tamagotchi will move next
- A purple shell with neon lights and 'Tamagotchi', dark pink frame, green buttons, and original programming and characters
- Raise your Tamagotchi from egg to child to Adult and how you take care of it will decide which of the 7 Adults you’ll get. Comes with 1 Tamagotchi on a chain to take with you everywhere
- Battery (CR2032) included. For Ages 8+
Where your progress and data go
The Marketplace listing makes three distinct data claims. Keep them separate, because they differ in how much you control them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLocal progress
According to the listing, DevGotchi has no telemetry, no accounts and no external servers. Ordinary progress is stored in VS Code’s local storage, and you can export and import it as JSON. Export before you reinstall the extension or move to a new machine, since the listing describes local storage as the only home for that progress. I did not audit the source code or test network behaviour myself, so these are the listing’s statements.

Quest-pack imports from a URL
The listing describes importing quest packs from a URL as opt-in. The extension asks for explicit confirmation before it fetches anything. Treat any quest pack from an unfamiliar address the way you would treat any other downloaded file.
Team Mode and your repository
Team Mode is a separate sharing feature and is also opt-in. The Marketplace listing says it stores team progress in the repository, while the author’s article, as described in its search excerpt, says progress syncs through git. Either way, team progress lives in files in the repository, so anyone with access to that repository can see it. Enable it only in repositories where committing that data is acceptable to your team, and check how your repository’s history and access controls work first.

What “judges your work ethic” actually measures
The title’s phrase is the creator’s framing, and it is worth being precise about it. The scoring signals in the listing are activity and repository state: saves, commits, bug fixes, lint or build errors, merge conflicts and file length. None of them measures whether your code is correct, well designed or useful. A long file can be the right design, and a streak of commits can be trivial. The game judges what it can see, not how good the work is.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What the claims do not show
The listing is a feature description, not an efficacy study. It does not claim that DevGotchi improves focus, output, wellbeing or burnout outcomes, and I found no independent evaluation that does. “Burnout” appears in the game as a state the avatar can reach. It is not a clinical assessment, and the game does not diagnose anything about you.
Best Value
- ZOOM. Nurture with a spin! Zoom into Paradise! Turn the dial to take care of your Tama. Zoom from cell to space for traditional nurturing play - clean the poop, feed them delicious food and make them feel better! Play new mini games and nurturing activities and shop in the new LAB MODE.
- CHARACTERS. Raise more than 50,000 Tamas. Depending on the environment and the way you take care of your Tama, you can grow over 50 different characters in 12 species, with over 30 new Tamas. Plus, BREED play creates more Tamas by bringing parent's genes to the next generation.
- CONNECT. Connect with friend's device directly to see how your Tamas interact - is it a good match or a bad match? And, now, when you connect, you can play games with or against your friend! ** Please note that the connect mini-game is not available in "Tamagotchi Paradise - Pink Land / Blue Water / Purple Sky / Jade Forest.” **
- THREE FIELDS. Start in the Tropics field and unlock the Glacier and Forest fields for different play and Tamas. Plus, purchase are expansions to expand the field!
- AND MORE. The Orange Tropics device has a pretty pink shell with orange top, dial and buttons
The creator’s motivation, as described in the author’s article, is personal. He says he will grind for game achievements but struggles to stay focused through debugging, and he presents the extension as putting a game inside work. That is one developer’s account. It is not evidence that most developers share the problem or that the game solves it. The article’s wording was checked only against its search excerpt, not the full text.
The listing also includes a standalone tagline, “Code is a Martial Art.” It appears without a named speaker, so it should not be read as a statement from any particular person.
Quick Recap
Who it suits, and how to try it sensibly
- It suits developers who enjoy game framing and want a visible reward for routine editor activity.
- Start with a personal or sandbox repository before you turn on Team Mode in shared work.
- Export your JSON progress regularly if the game history matters to you.
- Read boss encounters as prompts to look at a lint error, a merge conflict or a very large file, not as a verdict on your work.
- Support is optional. The listing includes a GitHub Sponsors button for the creator, and nothing about the extension requires payment.
