What Are Phobos and Deimos Made Of? How Scientists Study Mars’s Moons

Scientists have clues to the composition of Phobos and Deimos, including a reported hydration signature on Deimos, but no definitive inventory. Planned MMX measurements and a Phobos sample return could provide stronger evidence.

Scientists do not yet know exactly what Phobos and Deimos are made of. Their dark surfaces and infrared spectra offer clues, but the observed spectral features are weak or ambiguous, not a definitive mineral inventory. Researchers combine spacecraft images and spectroscopy with planned elemental measurements at Phobos; Japan’s MMX mission also plans to return Phobos material to Earth for laboratory study.

What is known about the moons’ composition?

Phobos and Deimos are small, dark moons of Mars, but their precise composition remains unsettled. In particular, available infrared spectra do not show strong diagnostic features that would identify their surface materials with confidence. A spectrum can constrain what a surface may be like; it is not a complete inventory of the moon, and it does not directly reveal the composition of its interior. NASA’s technical discussion describes the infrared evidence as inconclusive (NASA Technical Reports Server).

That uncertainty matters because composition may help explain how the moons formed. The two leading scenarios described by the European Space Agency are that they are asteroids captured by Mars or debris that remained in orbit after a large object struck early Mars. If their materials can be characterized more precisely, scientists can test how well each scenario fits the evidence. Neither origin has been established by current observations (ESA’s overview of Phobos and Deimos).

These scenarios are not just competing labels. They suggest different expected relationships between the moons’ material and Mars or asteroids. More reliable composition measurements could therefore help researchers compare the observed materials with what each history would lead them to expect. But composition is one line of evidence, not a verdict on its own: the current observations have not settled the origin question.

A reported clue in Deimos’s spectrum

One published observation offers a specific, but limited, clue. Near-infrared observations of Deimos made with NASA’s IRTF telescope and SpeX instrument reported evidence of hydration in the long-wavelength spectrum. The study measured band depths of 4–5% around 3 micrometers (NASA Technical Reports Server study of SpeX observations). This is a reported spectral signature, not proof of a complete composition, a particular mineral, or the material throughout Deimos’s interior. The 4–5% figure describes the reported spectral band depth; it is not a measure of how much of Deimos is hydrated.

The same study reported changes in the shorter-wavelength spectral slope across Phobos. The authors interpreted those variations as possibly related to differences in composition, grain size, and/or space weathering. Because those explanations can produce overlapping effects in reflected light, the slope variation does not by itself identify a specific substance.

Together, these observations show both the value and the limits of spectra. A measured feature can identify a promising question for further study, such as whether a surface has hydration-related properties or varies from place to place. It cannot, by itself, provide a full chemical or mineralogical description. Scientists must interpret the signal cautiously and compare it with other types of evidence.

How do scientists investigate Phobos and Deimos?

Different instruments answer different questions. Cameras and spectrometers study reflected light and surface variation; gamma-ray and neutron instruments can help infer elemental composition; laboratory instruments can examine returned grains directly. The methods differ in what they measure, how directly they constrain composition, and whether they can observe both moons or only material collected at Phobos.

Method What it measures What it can tell scientists Main limitation
Imaging and remote spectroscopy Surface appearance and reflected light from both moons Surface patterns, spectral slopes, and absorption features that may indicate material differences Features can be weak or ambiguous; observations sample the surface rather than directly inventorying the interior
Gamma-ray and neutron spectroscopy Gamma rays and neutrons emitted from Phobos Elemental-composition constraints from planned MMX measurements These are planned observations, not results already obtained
Laboratory analysis of returned grains Physical sample material collected on Phobos and brought to Earth More detailed mineralogical and chemical context, including clues to alteration and origin Analysis depends on the planned sample return; results are not yet available

The comparison is useful because the methods do not all measure “composition” in the same way. Remote spectroscopy measures reflected light from the surface and uses its features as indirect clues. MEGANE is planned to infer elemental composition from gamma rays and neutrons at Phobos. Laboratory work would examine actual grains, offering more detailed mineralogical and chemical context. In terms of coverage, remote observations can study both moons, while the planned MMX sampling and the cited sample analyses focus on Phobos.

1. Imaging and remote spectroscopy

Spacecraft cameras record how the moons look, while spectrometers measure how their surfaces reflect light at different wavelengths. A spectral slope or an absorption feature can point to differences in surface materials or conditions. Observations resolved across a body can help show whether one area differs from another, as the reported slope variation on Phobos illustrates.

These measurements are indirect. A weak feature may have more than one explanation, and surface properties such as grain size or space weathering can affect the signal. Remote spectra therefore help narrow possibilities rather than supply a definitive list of minerals. They also cannot be treated as a direct analysis of the moons’ interiors (NASA Technical Reports Server; NASA Technical Reports Server study of SpeX observations).

Spatial variation matters as well as the overall appearance of a moon. If different areas show different slopes or features, that can prompt questions about whether their surfaces differ in composition, grain size, or exposure to space weathering. The Phobos observation is an example of such a clue, but the study’s possible explanations remain possibilities rather than a definitive identification. Surface observations can reveal where follow-up questions arise without telling scientists exactly what every grain—or the interior—is made of.

2. Gamma-ray and neutron measurements at Phobos

JAXA’s Martian Moons eXploration mission, or MMX, plans to investigate both moons and collect a sample from Phobos. Its MEGANE instrument is designed to measure gamma rays and neutrons emitted from Phobos, using those signals to infer elemental composition. That is a different kind of evidence from a reflected-light spectrum: it is intended to constrain which elements are present, rather than identify materials from the appearance of reflected light. MEGANE’s measurements are planned, not completed (NASA’s MMX mission page; JAXA’s MMX mission page).

MEGANE is one part of a broader mission payload. JAXA describes MMX as a mission to investigate the Martian moons and characterize Phobos, alongside landing and sample collection. Its measurements will add another line of evidence, but they should not be confused with laboratory analysis of actual returned material.

The distinction is practical: an elemental-composition constraint can complement surface spectra, but it is not the same as identifying individual minerals in a hand-sized sample. Pairing evidence from different methods gives researchers ways to ask whether the clues are consistent with one another. MEGANE’s measurements described here are planned for Phobos; this article does not describe them as a direct elemental survey of Deimos.

3. Sample return and laboratory analysis

MMX plans to collect material at Phobos and return it to Earth. ESA’s current factsheet gives a planned return of at least 10 grams in Japanese fiscal year 2031 (ESA’s Phobos and Deimos overview). JAXA describes two distinct sampling mechanisms intended to collect material from Phobos (JAXA’s MMX mission page).

Once returned, grains could be examined with laboratory techniques that provide more detailed mineralogical and chemical context than remote observations alone. NASA notes that participating scientist Jemma Davidson plans to use microscopy and mass spectrometry to study opaque minerals in the samples and investigate their origin and alteration history (NASA’s MMX science article). These analyses are prospective: no results from MMX’s planned returned sample should be presented as observed facts before the material is collected, returned, and examined.

The planned quantity is at least 10 grams, not a result or guarantee that analysis has already taken place. Returning material would let researchers study actual Phobos grains with laboratory techniques, including the planned microscopy and mass spectrometry work on opaque minerals. Such analyses may provide context on mineralogy, chemistry, alteration, and origin that remote signals cannot supply on their own. They remain future work under the cited schedule, so descriptions of what the sample will show must remain conditional.

What MMX plans to do, and when

MMX is led by JAXA, with contributions from NASA, CNES, DLR, and ESA. The mission is designed to investigate both Martian moons, land on Phobos, collect material there, and return it to Earth. NASA’s mission page currently lists October 20, 2026, as the launch date; ESA describes 2026 as the planned launch year and Japanese fiscal year 2031 as the planned sample-return period (NASA’s MMX mission page; ESA’s Phobos and Deimos overview).

Those dates are schedules, not guarantees. Mission timelines can change, and a planned measurement or sample analysis is not the same as a result already obtained. The distinction is especially important when discussing composition: the most detailed laboratory evidence depends on the sample being returned and studied.

The mission’s scope also helps explain why its evidence will be complementary. MMX is intended to investigate both moons, but the sampling described by JAXA and ESA is at Phobos. Remote observations remain important for studying surface properties across both bodies, while the planned in-situ elemental measurements and returned grains add focused evidence about Phobos. The mission should not be described as having already collected or analyzed a sample.

Why composition could clarify how the moons formed

The capture and impact-debris scenarios make different predictions about the relationship between the moons’ material and Mars or asteroids. Better compositional evidence could help researchers assess those relationships and determine which origin scenario best fits the observations. Current spectra and other measurements have not settled the question, so it is more accurate to describe the moons’ origin as unresolved than to label either one definitively as a captured asteroid or as a particular meteorite type.

The evidence is likely to become stronger by combining methods rather than relying on a single measurement. Remote observations can map surface variation; MEGANE is planned to constrain elemental composition at Phobos; and returned grains could be examined directly in laboratories. Together, those approaches can test whether surface clues, elemental measurements, and detailed sample properties tell a consistent story.

That is why uncertainty about composition is not a failure of observation. Scientists have useful clues, including the reported hydration indication in Deimos’s spectrum and possible surface variation on Phobos, but each clue has limits. A fuller picture will depend on interpreting remote observations alongside the planned MMX measurements and, if returned, laboratory analyses. Until that evidence is available, the responsible answer is that the moons’ exact composition and origin remain open questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do scientists know exactly what Phobos and Deimos are made of?

No. Their infrared spectra provide clues but lack strong diagnostic features, so current observations do not give a definitive composition for either moon or directly inventory their interiors.

What does the reported 4–5% band depth on Deimos mean?

A SpeX study reported 4–5% band depths around 3 micrometers as evidence of hydration in Deimos’s long-wavelength spectrum. The percentage describes the spectral band depth, not the fraction of the moon that is hydrated, and it is not a complete composition measurement.

How will MMX study Phobos’s composition?

MMX plans to use its MEGANE instrument to measure gamma rays and neutrons emitted from Phobos and infer elemental composition. The mission also plans to collect Phobos material for return to Earth, where laboratory analyses could provide more detailed mineralogical and chemical context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When will Phobos samples be returned to Earth?

The cited ESA schedule plans for at least 10 grams to be returned in Japanese fiscal year 2031. NASA’s mission page lists October 20, 2026, as the planned launch date. These are current plans, and mission schedules can change.

Are Phobos and Deimos captured asteroids?

That remains unsettled. ESA describes asteroid capture and debris left in orbit after a large impact on early Mars as leading scenarios. Composition evidence may help test them, but observations have not established either origin.

The Bottom Line

Phobos and Deimos remain compositionally uncertain: infrared spectra offer clues, not definitive inventories. Scientists combine remote observations with elemental measurements and, for Phobos, MMX’s planned sample return. Those future results may help test whether the moons were captured asteroids or formed from impact debris, but neither explanation is settled today.
