Neoclouds are specialized cloud providers built primarily for accelerated computing, especially GPU-heavy artificial-intelligence (AI) and high-performance-computing (HPC) workloads. Providers such as CoreWeave, Crusoe, Lambda and Nebius concentrate on accelerator capacity, cluster design and AI-oriented operations. Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud also offer GPUs and other accelerators, but those services sit inside much broader platforms that include storage, databases, networking, identity, security, analytics and managed application services.
The practical choice is therefore not “GPU cloud versus cloud without GPUs.” It is specialization versus breadth. A neocloud may fit when access to a particular accelerator, tightly connected cluster or focused operating model is the decisive requirement. A hyperscaler may fit better when you need global coverage, integrated governance, many managed services or one vendor for a varied application estate. Neither category is automatically cheaper or faster; the right answer depends on your workload, utilization, data location, software stack, support needs and contract terms.

What is a neocloud?
A neocloud is a cloud infrastructure provider organized around a narrow set of technically demanding workloads rather than around every type of enterprise IT. In current usage, the term most often describes providers whose primary capacity is GPU-accelerated compute for model training, inference, data processing, scientific simulation, rendering and related HPC jobs.
The specialization can appear at several layers:
- Hardware: a concentrated inventory of current or high-memory GPUs, often with fast local storage and high-bandwidth networking.
- Cluster design: prebuilt multi-GPU and multi-node configurations intended to keep distributed jobs supplied with data and synchronized across nodes.
- Software: images, drivers, CUDA-compatible libraries, orchestration and templates tuned for machine-learning frameworks.
- Operations: capacity planning, reservations and support focused on accelerator workloads instead of a broad catalog of unrelated services.
“Specialized” does not mean “just a website that rents individual graphics cards.” A neocloud can expose virtual machines, bare-metal servers, managed Kubernetes, job schedulers, storage, networking and AI platform features. The distinction is the provider’s center of gravity: accelerated infrastructure is the product around which the rest of the service is designed.

CoreWeave presents itself as an AI-focused cloud platform built around accelerated infrastructure. Crusoe describes cloud infrastructure for AI workloads, including GPU computing and data-center capacity. Lambda offers cloud GPU infrastructure and machine-learning-oriented services, while Nebius positions its platform around AI cloud infrastructure and GPU resources. These descriptions indicate a market category, not a guarantee that every provider has the same hardware, regions, software or support model.
Why did neoclouds emerge?
AI jobs have unusual hardware requirements
Many conventional cloud applications scale by adding general-purpose CPU instances, memory and storage. Large language-model training and other deep-learning workloads instead spend much of their time in matrix operations that benefit from GPUs or other accelerators. A useful deployment may require dozens or thousands of accelerators working as one distributed system, with enough memory and network bandwidth to keep them busy.
HPC workloads have a similar pattern. Simulations, computational chemistry, financial modeling and rendering can require tightly coupled nodes, fast interconnects and predictable access to a particular accelerator generation. A provider that designs around those requirements can make cluster shape and scheduling more central than the breadth of its general-purpose catalog.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Capacity is a planning problem, not only a pricing problem
Accelerators are expensive, have long supply chains and are not interchangeable in every software stack. Teams may need a specific memory size, interconnect, driver version or topology. A specialized provider can reserve capacity, build clusters in a small number of suitable facilities and focus support on getting distributed jobs running. A hyperscaler may offer more locations and services, but the exact combination of accelerator, region and quota can still determine whether a project starts on schedule.

Different operating models became viable
AI companies often want infrastructure that behaves like a high-performance cluster rather than a collection of unrelated virtual machines. Neoclouds have grown by packaging that experience into a cloud interface. Some customers use a simple virtual-machine API; others use bare metal, Kubernetes or a managed training environment. The common thread is optimization for accelerator utilization and time to useful work.
How AWS, Azure and Google Cloud differ
AWS, Azure and Google Cloud all offer accelerator-backed compute. AWS documents GPU and other accelerated-computing EC2 instance families as part of its wider EC2 catalog. Microsoft documents GPU-accelerated Azure virtual-machine sizes for AI, visualization and other compute-intensive workloads. Google Cloud documents GPUs and accelerator options for Compute Engine. Their defining difference is not the absence of GPUs; it is the breadth surrounding them.
| Decision axis | Neoclouds | AWS, Azure and Google Cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Primary focus | Accelerated AI, HPC and related workloads | General cloud platform with accelerated-computing options |
| Accelerator choice | Often concentrated on selected GPU generations, memory sizes and cluster shapes | Multiple accelerator families within a much larger compute catalog; exact availability varies by region and quota |
| Cluster shape and interconnect | Frequently a central selling point, with configurations designed for distributed jobs | Available through documented instance and specialized service options, alongside many general-purpose designs |
| Managed services | Usually narrower and oriented toward AI infrastructure, orchestration and storage | Broad portfolios spanning databases, analytics, identity, security, networking, application platforms and operations |
| Geographic footprint | May be concentrated in fewer regions or facilities | Generally broader global region and availability-zone coverage, subject to the specific accelerator |
| Enterprise integration | Depends on the provider’s identity, networking, compliance and support features | Deep integration with established enterprise accounts, policy systems and managed services |
| Commercial model | On-demand, reserved or committed accelerator capacity; terms vary by provider | On-demand, savings or commitment programs, plus separate charges for associated services |
| Portability | Often uses familiar Linux, containers and Kubernetes, but hardware-specific software can create dependencies | Broad service integration can increase switching costs even when compute is portable |
NVIDIA’s DGX Cloud materials help illustrate the larger accelerated-computing ecosystem: specialized AI infrastructure can be delivered as a distinct layer while still connecting to general cloud services. The boundary is not absolute. Hyperscalers operate specialized AI systems, and neoclouds may provide ordinary CPUs, storage and networking. The useful question is which capability receives the provider’s deepest optimization and operational attention.

There is no category-wide price winner. A lower advertised GPU-hour rate can disappear after adding storage, networking, data transfer, idle capacity, software support, reservations and the cost of moving data into or out of a region. Live prices and capacity change with accelerator generation, region, commitment term and date, so a comparison must use the exact configuration and billing conditions for your job.

Calculate the cost of useful work
Compare the cost of completing a training run, inference volume or simulation, not merely the instance rate. A practical estimate includes:
- Accelerator time, including all GPUs attached to a node or cluster.
- CPU, host memory, local NVMe or equivalent scratch storage.
- Persistent storage for datasets, checkpoints, logs and model artifacts.
- Ingress and egress networking, cross-zone traffic and traffic to external users or services.
- Orchestration, managed control planes, support plans and observability.
- Reservations or minimum commitments, including unused capacity when demand fluctuates.
- Engineering time spent tuning images, drivers, schedulers and data pipelines.
For example, a neocloud can win when its cluster runs a distributed training job with high accelerator utilization and minimal data movement. A hyperscaler can win when the same model already uses that provider’s object storage, private networking, identity, data warehouse and deployment pipeline. The relevant denominator is cost per completed run, token, inference request or scientific result.
Utilization changes the answer
Committed capacity can lower effective rates but creates risk if experiments are delayed or demand falls. On-demand capacity preserves flexibility but may be unavailable at the required scale. Measure queue time, job utilization, failed-run recovery and the percentage of paid accelerator time spent waiting for input. A cheaper machine that is starved by storage or networking is not cheaper per result.

A neocloud is often a strong fit when:
- You need a particular GPU type, memory capacity or multi-node topology.
- Distributed training performance depends on fast interconnects and consistent cluster placement.
- Your team can operate Linux, containers, drivers and orchestration without relying on a large managed-service layer.
- Accelerator access and scheduling speed matter more than a broad catalog of databases and business services.
- Your data can be placed near the provider’s available capacity without costly transfers.
A hyperscaler is often a strong fit when:
- The training pipeline already depends on that provider’s storage, networking, identity, security and data services.
- You need many regions, formal governance controls, enterprise support or regulated-workload capabilities.
- The project includes substantial CPU processing, databases, event systems, analytics or production APIs around the model.
- You want one contract and one operational control plane for both AI and non-AI systems.
- Your workload is intermittent and benefits from the provider’s broader scheduling and capacity options.
Neither choice guarantees faster training. Benchmark the complete job with your model, batch size, data loader, checkpoint frequency, precision settings and distributed-training configuration. A provider with a theoretically faster GPU can lose if the software image, network topology or storage path is poorly matched.

Accelerator and cluster details
Record the exact accelerator model, memory, host CPU and RAM, local storage, interconnect technology, number of GPUs per node and supported multi-node shapes. Confirm whether the advertised configuration is generally available or subject to approval and quota. Ask how replacement hardware, maintenance and failed nodes affect a running job.
Availability and location
Map the required region to your data-residency, latency and disaster-recovery obligations. Ask for historical or contractual capacity commitments only if they are written into the agreement; a marketing statement about available GPUs is not a guarantee for your dates or scale. Check whether a second region has the same accelerator and software image.
Software and operations
Verify driver and CUDA compatibility, framework versions, container registry access, Kubernetes or scheduler support, image customization, secrets handling, monitoring and log export. Establish who patches the host, who responds to a failed node and how quickly you can recover a checkpoint. Confirm whether privileged access is available when a kernel or networking setting requires it.
Best Value
Security, compliance and support
Review identity federation, private networking, encryption, audit logs, vulnerability response, data deletion and the compliance attestations your organization actually needs. Compare support hours, severity definitions, escalation paths and whether an engineer familiar with distributed training is included. A low infrastructure rate is not a substitute for an acceptable incident-response process.
Exit and portability
Keep model code, containers, infrastructure definitions and datasets in formats that can run elsewhere. Test export of checkpoints and metadata, not only application binaries. Include egress charges, transfer time, replacement storage and the engineering work needed to adapt drivers or orchestration. Portability is a design choice that must be exercised before an emergency migration.
Can you move workloads between a neocloud and a hyperscaler?
Yes, but the difficulty varies by abstraction level. Containerized Linux jobs using standard frameworks are usually easier to move than workloads tied to a proprietary training service, accelerator-specific kernels or a provider’s data platform.
- Define a hardware-neutral baseline. Pin framework, driver and library versions in a tested container. Record required GPU memory, precision modes, interconnect assumptions and minimum throughput.
- Separate data from compute. Keep datasets, checkpoints and configuration in portable formats. Document object-storage endpoints, filesystem semantics and encryption keys so a new environment can reproduce them.
- Automate provisioning. Use version-controlled infrastructure and deployment manifests. Parameterize region, instance type, storage class, identity and network names instead of hard-coding one provider’s identifiers.
- Run a parity test. Measure examples per second, scaling efficiency, checkpoint time, failure recovery and total cost on each candidate platform. Use the same data slice and stopping criteria.
- Plan transfer and rollback. Estimate time and egress cost for the full dataset and latest checkpoints. Keep the previous environment available until the new run has passed quality and recovery checks.
Some differences cannot be eliminated completely. A model may rely on a GPU architecture, high-speed fabric or managed feature unavailable elsewhere. Treat those dependencies as documented portability exceptions, and keep a fallback configuration for critical workloads.
A practical decision checklist
Score each candidate against the workload that will actually run, rather than assigning a permanent winner to a provider category.
- Hardware fit: Does the accelerator have enough memory, and does the cluster provide the required topology?
- Capacity: Can you obtain the number of GPUs when experiments or production jobs are scheduled?
- Performance: Does an end-to-end benchmark meet throughput, latency and scaling targets?
- Total cost: What is the cost per completed result after storage, transfer, support and idle time?
- Data placement: Can data stay in an approved region without expensive movement?
- Operations: Can your team patch, observe, secure and recover the environment?
- Platform needs: Do you require databases, analytics, identity, policy and application services from the same vendor?
- Risk: What happens if capacity disappears, a node fails or the provider changes its hardware mix?
- Exit: Can you move code, containers, data and checkpoints within an acceptable time and budget?
If accelerator access, cluster specialization and focused operations dominate the score, a neocloud deserves a pilot. If governance, global reach, managed-service integration and workload diversity dominate, a hyperscaler may be the safer foundation. Many organizations use both: specialized capacity for selected training or HPC runs, and a broader cloud platform for data, APIs, security and production operations.
