Digital camera features are the specifications and functions that determine how a camera captures, processes, stores, displays, and transfers photos and video. Their value depends on what you photograph: zoom range may matter for wildlife, while autofocus and burst behavior matter more for action. No single specification ranks every camera for every use.
What do digital camera features mean?
A feature can describe a camera component, such as its image sensor or lens, or a function, such as autofocus or wireless transfer. Together, these determine what the camera can capture and how easily you can compose, edit, store, and share it. Canon’s camera-selection guide treats sensor size, autofocus, stabilization, shooting speed, and video as factors to weigh together rather than as a universal ranking.

Which image and lens features should you compare?
Sensor size and resolution
The image sensor receives light through the lens and converts it into electrical signals that the camera processes into an image, as Canon explains in its camera technology overview. Resolution, usually given in megapixels, describes the number of pixels in an image; it does not, by itself, establish overall image quality. Sensor size and megapixel count are separate specifications: Nikon lists the COOLPIX P950 with 16.0 effective megapixels and a 1/2.3-inch-type CMOS sensor.
Recommended Free Tools
When comparing cameras, consider sensor format alongside lens, lighting, and the size at which you intend to view or print images. A larger sensor can offer image-quality and low-light advantages, while a smaller-sensor design may allow a compact camera or a wider built-in zoom range. The design and intended use determine which tradeoff is useful.

Lens, focal length, and optical zoom
The lens determines the view captured, and its focal length helps indicate how wide or tightly framed that view will be. A zoom lens covers a range of focal lengths. When comparing zoom cameras, look for the actual focal-length range or 35mm-equivalent range where available; a zoom ratio alone does not show how wide the lens starts or how far it reaches.
For example, Nikon specifies the P950 as having an 83x optical zoom and a 35mm-equivalent angle-of-view range of 24–2000mm. Optical zoom changes the lens’s field of view. Digital zoom is a separate feature: Nikon lists it separately, up to 4x, so it should not be treated as additional optical reach.
Aperture
The f-number indicates the lens aperture setting. A lens’s maximum aperture affects how much light it can admit and can influence background blur. On many zoom lenses, the maximum aperture changes across the zoom range. Nikon lists the P950 lens at f/2.8–6.5. A lower f-number is not, on its own, a complete measure of lens quality; consider it with focal length and the way you plan to shoot.

How do focus and stabilization affect a shot?
Autofocus
Autofocus (AF) adjusts focus automatically. Cameras can differ in focus-area choices, subject detection, tracking, and autofocus behavior for still photos versus video. Sony, for example, lists built-in autofocus on its DSC-W830 product page. For moving subjects, check the specific camera’s tracking modes and behavior rather than assuming any AF system will keep a subject sharp in every situation.
Image stabilization
Image stabilization is designed to counter camera movement and help reduce blur in supported situations. It may be built into a lens or camera body, and performance varies by model. Nikon says the P950’s Dual Detect Optical VR has an effect equivalent to a shutter speed 5.5 stops faster under its stated CIPA-based measurement conditions at about 350mm equivalent. That is a model-specific, test-conditioned rating—not a guaranteed result for every subject or shooting situation.
What do burst speed and video specifications tell you?
Continuous shooting speed
Continuous shooting speed is the rate at which a camera captures successive frames, commonly expressed in frames per second. It can help when photographing action or brief expressions, but the headline rate is only part of the picture. Buffer depth, autofocus behavior during a burst, and the selected file format can also affect how useful a burst is. Canon includes shooting speed among the factors to consider when choosing a camera.

Video capability
Compare the specific video resolution and frame rates, then check autofocus, stabilization, audio connections, and recording limits for the work you intend to do. “4K” alone does not describe all of a camera’s video capabilities. Nikon lists the P950 as recording 4K UHD at 30p or 25p.

JPEG and RAW
A camera may save JPEG files, RAW files, or both. Nikon lists JPEG and NRW (Nikon’s RAW format) for P950 still images. Broadly, RAW is intended to leave more latitude for editing, while JPEG is processed by the camera and convenient to share. Check whether a camera supports the formats your editing and sharing workflow needs.
Viewfinder, screen, and controls
These features shape how you compose and operate the camera. A viewfinder lets you frame an image at eye level; an adjustable screen can make it easier to compose from a low or high angle. The P950 specification lists an electronic viewfinder and a vari-angle LCD, but display arrangements and controls differ by model.

Connectivity and compatibility
Wireless transfer, ports, a hot shoe, lens mount, and accessory support can affect how a camera fits into a wider setup. Compatibility is model-specific: verify the camera documentation before assuming a phone, lens, flash, microphone, or other accessory will work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you compare camera features for your needs?
Start with the photographs or video you want to make, then compare the features that directly support that use. A feature list is useful only when it answers a practical question.
- Subjects and distance: For wildlife or distant sports, consider focal-length reach and autofocus. For landscapes or interiors, wide-angle coverage may be more useful.
- Light and output: Weigh sensor format, aperture, stabilization, and intended print or display size together; megapixels alone do not settle the choice.
- Action: Compare autofocus modes and tracking, burst speed, and buffer behavior—not just the maximum frames-per-second figure.
- Video: Match resolution and frame rates to your needs, and check autofocus, stabilization, audio connections, and recording limits.
- Portability and operation: Consider the size and weight of the camera and lens, controls, viewfinder, screen articulation, and battery workflow.
- System and total cost: For an interchangeable-lens camera, account for compatible lenses and accessories. For a fixed-lens camera, assess whether its built-in lens covers the range you need.
What do real camera specifications look like?
Manufacturer specifications show how features are combined in particular models; they do not establish which camera is best for everyone. These examples illustrate the kinds of details to inspect:
| Specification | Nikon COOLPIX P950 | Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W830 |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 16.0 effective megapixels (Nikon) | 20.1MP sensor (Sony Middle East) |
| Sensor size or type | 1/2.3-inch-type CMOS (Nikon) | Not stated on the cited Sony product page |
| Optical zoom | 83x; 35mm-equivalent angle of view 24–2000mm (Nikon) | 8x (Sony Middle East) |
| Other documented features | f/2.8–6.5 lens; Dual Detect Optical VR; JPEG and NRW still formats; electronic viewfinder; vari-angle LCD; 4K UHD at 30p or 25p (Nikon) | Autofocus, optical image stabilization, and automatic scene settings (Sony Middle East) |
Specifications are from Nikon’s COOLPIX P950 specifications and Sony Middle East’s DSC-W830 product page. They are model-specific; compare the features relevant to your use rather than treating the larger number in one row as a verdict.
