What Are Defensive Stocks, and How Do They Perform During Market Downturns?

Defensive stocks are shares of companies whose demand, earnings or cash flow tend to be less sensitive to recessions. Consumer staples, health care and utilities are the classic examples; telecommunications is often included as well. Their relative resilience can reduce portfolio losses during a sell-off, but it does not guarantee a positive return. Defensive holdings commonly lag economically sensitive shares when a recovery or strong bull market begins.

The reason is straightforward: people continue buying food, household necessities, medical services, electricity, gas and water even when they postpone cars, travel or other discretionary purchases. That steadier demand can support revenue, but interest rates, regulation, commodity prices, competition and company-specific problems still move defensive stocks.

What makes a stock defensive?

A stock is called defensive when the underlying business is comparatively resilient through the economic cycle. Its customers may regard the product as necessary, contracts may provide predictable cash flow, or regulation may make demand less volatile. “Defensive” describes a relative characteristic, not a promise that the share price will rise when the market falls.

Defensive companies can still lose money in a bear market. Their shares can be overvalued, profits can shrink, and investors can sell everything to raise cash. The practical objective is narrower: to reduce the depth of a portfolio’s decline compared with a broad equity market, while accepting that the portfolio may participate less in the next upswing.

Essential demand is the main mechanism

In a contraction, households and businesses usually cut optional spending first. Food, cleaning products, basic personal care, prescriptions, hospital treatment, electricity and water are harder to eliminate. More stable unit demand can make earnings and dividends less cyclical than those of companies selling construction equipment, luxury goods, advertising or travel.

That stability is not uniform. A staple producer can face rising ingredient and packaging costs; a hospital operator can face reimbursement changes; a utility can need expensive financing; and a telecom company can lose customers to aggressive competition. Defensive status lowers sensitivity to one risk—the business cycle—but does not remove other risks.

Which sectors are usually considered defensive?

Sector Why demand can be resilient Important risks and exceptions
Consumer staples Food, beverages, cleaning supplies and other household necessities are purchased in most economic conditions. Input-cost inflation, private-label competition, pricing pressure, changing consumer preferences and retailer bargaining power can reduce margins.
Health care Medical treatment, medicines, devices and insurance services address needs that do not disappear in a recession. Government policy, reimbursement rates, patent expiry, clinical outcomes, lawsuits and product concentration can change results quickly.
Utilities Electricity, gas and water are essential services, often delivered under regulated or contracted arrangements. High debt and capital spending make utilities sensitive to interest rates; regulators, fuel costs, weather and local rules also matter.
Telecommunications Mobile, broadband and connectivity services are recurring household and business expenses. Heavy investment requirements, spectrum costs, leverage, price competition and customer churn can overwhelm the benefit of recurring bills.
Energy in some classifications Energy can appear in a defensive index because of the index methodology and the economic importance of energy supplies. Profit and share-price performance can be dominated by oil and gas prices, production costs and geopolitics, so energy may behave differently from staples or utilities.

Sector labels are not universal. For example, the MSCI USA Defensive Sectors Index includes every security from consumer staples, energy, health care and utilities. That construction differs from the narrower list often used in personal-finance explanations, so an index’s definition must be checked before comparing performance.

What happened in major market downturns?

Historical evidence shows meaningful relative protection in several severe sell-offs, but each observation covers a particular period, index methodology and currency treatment. It should be read as evidence of what happened, not as a forecast.

March 2020 global sell-off

In March 2020, the S&P Global BMI Total Return Index fell 14.3%. S&P Dow Jones Indices reported that global health care beat that benchmark by 9.9 percentage points, consumer staples beat it by 8.9 points, and utilities beat it by 2.4 points. The comparison uses total returns for that month, so dividends are included in the index results.

Four global drawdowns of at least 20%

In an S&P Dow Jones Indices analysis covering four global drawdowns of at least 20% since December 31, 1994, the broad market lost an average of 40%. Consumer staples, health care and utilities remained positive in all four episodes, averaging gains of 26%, 16% and 15%, respectively. Those averages combine different crises and do not imply that each sector gained the same amount in every episode.

Recession-phase evidence

Fidelity’s business-cycle framework found that the broader market lost an average of 15% a year during the recession phases in its cited analysis, while consumer staples outperformed the broader market during every recessionary period in that analysis. The result is a historical pattern, not a rule for the next recession. Fidelity also observes that utilities and telecommunications can attract demand when investors value relatively high dividend yields, yet both sectors may lag when the recovery starts.

A current index snapshot

MSCI data as of September 30, 2026, provide a useful illustration of why drawdown figures need context. The MSCI USA Defensive Sectors Index had 137 constituents, a 10-year annualized standard deviation of 12.94%, and a maximum drawdown of 41.65% from December 26, 2007, to March 9, 2009. The cited MSCI ACWI IMI comparison index reported a 58.59% maximum drawdown over its stated comparison period. These statistics change as constituents, prices and measurement windows change; they do not mean the defensive index avoided losses.

How to measure defensive performance properly

A single “down-market return” can conceal important differences. Use several measures and ensure that both investments cover the same dates, geography, currency and return convention.

Measure What it tells you Question to ask
Maximum drawdown The largest peak-to-trough fall in the selected period. How severe was the worst loss, and how long did recovery take?
Downside capture How much of a benchmark’s negative performance the strategy historically experienced during down months. Did it lose less than the benchmark when markets fell?
Volatility or beta How widely returns fluctuate, or how closely they have moved with a benchmark. Is the lower risk persistent, or was it caused by one unusually calm period?
Total return and dividend yield Combines price change and distributions; yield shows the income rate at a point in time. Is the income sustainable, and are dividends included in both comparisons?
Earnings and demand stability Shows whether sales, margins and cash flow actually held up. Is the stock defensive because of its business, or only because investors recently preferred it?
Interest-rate sensitivity Important for debt-heavy and dividend-oriented companies. Could higher bond yields make the shares less attractive or raise financing costs?
Concentration Reveals dependence on a few companies or one regulated industry. Would one product failure, lawsuit or regulatory decision dominate the portfolio?
Recovery-period return Measures what happened after the trough, when cyclical shares often rebound faster. Did the defensive approach give back its relative advantage during the recovery?

Compare like with like: a U.S. price index is not equivalent to a global total-return index, and a sector index with energy is not equivalent to one without it. Record the benchmark, index methodology, currency, dividend treatment and exact start and end dates alongside every statistic.

Why defensive stocks can still fall

Market-wide selling

During a liquidity shock, investors may sell profitable and unprofitable companies alike. Defensive shares can decline even when their operating results remain stable because valuation multiples contract or shareholders need cash.

Interest-rate pressure

Utilities and telecommunications often carry substantial debt to build networks and infrastructure. Higher rates can increase refinancing costs and make a stock’s dividend look less attractive relative to newly issued bonds. The same valuation effect can affect other high-yield shares.

Inflation and margin compression

Staples companies must pay for crops, energy, packaging, transport and labor. If retailers or consumers resist price increases, those costs reduce margins. A defensive label does not protect earnings from inflation.

Policy, product and legal risk in health care

Health-care revenue can depend on public reimbursement, insurance rules, patent protection and clinical success. A policy change, failed trial, recall or lawsuit can hurt one company even while the sector remains defensive overall.

Commodity exposure in energy

Energy’s inclusion in a defensive index can reflect a classification decision rather than low volatility. Oil and gas prices, production disruptions and geopolitical events may make energy shares highly cyclical.

Valuation and crowding

Investors often pay a premium for perceived safety during a crisis. If earnings do not grow enough to justify that price, a defensive stock can underperform even while the business remains stable. Buying after a large safety premium has formed creates a different risk from buying before the downturn.

Defensive stocks versus a diversified portfolio

A portfolio concentrated in one “safe” sector can be less robust than a broad portfolio containing many sectors, countries and company sizes. Utilities may share the same rate risk; staples may share the same retailer and input-cost pressures. A broad low-volatility approach or a diversified sector allocation can reduce single-company risk, although it still carries equity risk.

Sector funds and exchange-traded funds can spread exposure across multiple issuers. Read the fund’s methodology, holdings, rebalancing schedule, fees, geographic scope and treatment of dividends. A narrow sector fund can remain volatile if its constituents are highly correlated or if the sector has only a few large companies.

Ways to add defensive exposure

There is no single correct defensive allocation. The appropriate choice depends on the goal, time horizon, liquidity needs, tax situation and tolerance for loss.

Lower-volatility equities

These strategies select stocks with historically smaller price fluctuations, often across several sectors. They remain fully exposed to equity-market losses and can become concentrated in sectors that recently appeared stable.

Defensive-sector funds

A consumer-staples, health-care or utilities fund offers targeted exposure and diversification within that sector. It is easier to implement than selecting individual companies, but the sector’s common risks remain.

Minimum-volatility ETFs

Minimum-volatility funds use a rules-based process to seek a lower-volatility portfolio. Their constraints can lead to different sector weights, turnover and performance than a traditional market-cap index. Review the methodology rather than assuming “minimum volatility” means no losses.

Bonds and cash

High-quality bonds and cash can reduce equity exposure and provide liquidity for planned spending. They have their own risks: bond prices can fall when rates rise, credit quality matters, and cash may lose purchasing power to inflation.

Buffered and hedged equity ETFs

Buffered products use options to absorb a stated portion of losses over a defined outcome period, while hedged strategies may buy protection or otherwise limit downside. Read the cap on upside, buffer amount, maturity date, fees, issuer credit exposure and what happens if you sell before the outcome period ends. The protection is conditional, not a guarantee against every loss.

A practical process for building a defensive tilt

  1. Define the job. Decide whether the objective is lower drawdown, current income, money needed within a few years, or psychological comfort during volatility. Those goals can require different tools.
  2. Set a maximum acceptable loss. Write down the decline you could tolerate without selling at the worst moment. Use that limit to determine total equity exposure before choosing a sector.
  3. Check existing concentration. List employer shares, retirement funds and other accounts. You may already be heavily exposed to health care, utilities or a single large company.
  4. Choose the diversification level. Compare individual stocks, a sector fund, a multi-sector low-volatility fund and a mix of equities, bonds and cash. Evaluate concentration and correlation, not only the dividend yield.
  5. Study the underlying economics. Review revenue stability, debt maturities, interest coverage, payout ratio, competitive position, regulation and the risks specific to the industry.
  6. Compare total costs and taxes. Include fund expenses, trading spreads, commissions where applicable, tax treatment of dividends and capital gains, and the cost of any options-based protection.
  7. Choose a rebalancing rule. Rebalance on a calendar schedule or when allocations move outside a stated range. Do not switch sectors solely because one has recently outperformed.
  8. Test the recovery plan. Decide in advance how and when you would restore broader equity exposure after a sell-off. A defensive allocation can become a drag if it is left unchanged through a sustained recovery.

When defensive stocks may be a poor fit

  • You have a long horizon, high risk tolerance and a need for maximum growth rather than lower near-term volatility.
  • You are buying after a large valuation premium has already formed and cannot tolerate years of underperformance.
  • Your portfolio already has substantial exposure to the same sectors through an employer plan or broad funds.
  • You need guaranteed principal or spending money on a fixed date; equities, including defensive equities, do not provide that guarantee.
  • You are using a narrow sector fund without understanding its rate, regulatory, commodity or concentration risks.

Bottom line for investors

Defensive stocks are businesses with relatively dependable demand, most commonly in consumer staples, health care and utilities, with telecommunications often included. Historical periods—including the March 2020 sell-off and four global drawdowns analyzed since 1994—showed these sectors losing less than, or even gaining while, broad markets fell. The trade-off was also visible: defensive exposure can lag during early recoveries and strong bull markets, and it remains vulnerable to valuation, interest rates, regulation, inflation, commodities and company-specific events.

Use defensive stocks as one part of a risk plan, not as a guarantee. Judge them by drawdown, downside capture, volatility, total return, valuation, income sustainability and concentration, then compare those measures over matching periods and methodologies.
