Conventional bidirectional B-frames can improve compression, but they may add encoder latency because the encoder must look ahead and reorder frames. Use them for quality-focused streaming when the destination supports them and your latency budget allows; disable them for strict low-latency workflows unless your encoder and destination support a suitable low-latency alternative.
What B-frames do
Encoders organize video into pictures that may be coded as I-, P-, or B-frames. A conventional bidirectional B-frame can refer to frames before and after it in display order. Using those references can reduce the data needed to represent a scene, improving compression efficiency at a given bitrate.

The trade-off is that the encoder may need to inspect future frames before it can output the current one. It can also reorder frames for decoding. That lookahead and reordering add encoder-side delay; the effect depends on the codec, encoder, preset, scene, and configuration.

Removing B-frames avoids that particular reordering cost, but may require more bitrate to achieve similar quality. B-frame settings can also affect encoder buffering and memory use. They are one part of the latency chain, not a control for total glass-to-glass delay: network transit, platform processing, decoder buffering, and playback settings also matter.

How much latency do B-frames add?
There is no single number that applies to every stream. AWS Elemental describes latency increasing by a few frames for each additional B-frame in a GOP, while zero B-frames remove that impact but require more bitrate to maintain similar quality. This is a qualitative explanation of encoder behavior, not a universal benchmark; results depend on the encoder, codec, preset, scene, bitrate, and the rest of the pipeline. AWS Elemental’s latency discussion
Keep encoder delay separate from total viewer delay. A low-latency encoder setting cannot by itself guarantee low glass-to-glass latency. The cited AWS article also discusses encoder and decoder buffering in its workflow; its buffer examples should not be treated as universal rules for other products.

How to choose and test a setting
- Check the destination’s ingest rules first. Look up the requirements for the exact service and publishing mode. If it rejects B-frames, compatibility takes priority over a quality preference.
- Set a latency target. If viewers need to respond in real time, start with conventional B-frames disabled. For a quality-first broadcast with less demanding interaction, test the encoder’s supported B-frame configuration.
- Verify codec and encoder support. Options vary by codec, GPU, driver, encoder, and software version. Do not assume an NVENC option exists or behaves identically in another encoder.
- Test the actual scene and bitrate. Compare motion-heavy and detailed scenes at the bitrate you intend to publish. Check both picture quality and end-to-end delay; a setting that looks good on a static scene may not suit fast motion.
- Change one setting at a time. Keep resolution, frame rate, bitrate, GOP/keyframe interval, and other latency settings fixed while comparing. This makes it easier to identify whether B-frames are helping or hurting in your setup.
- Confirm stability and memory use. Watch for encoder overload, increased buffering, or platform disconnects during a sustained test, not just a short preview.
NVENC and OBS details to know
Unidirectional B-frames in NVENC
NVIDIA documents unidirectional B-frames as a low-latency option: unlike conventional bidirectional B-frames, they use past references, avoiding the need to reorder around future references. NVIDIA reports 5–10% better compression than P-only encoding with no frame-reordering delay for this mode and configuration; that is a vendor claim, not a universal gain. Its documented FFmpeg example uses -bf 0 -unidir_b 1 and requires FFmpeg 7.1 or later. The feature’s availability depends on compatible hardware and encoder configuration. See NVIDIA’s FFmpeg examples and requirements
NVIDIA’s 1080p30 example uses a 5 Mbps target and a 167K VBV buffer alongside those options. These are example values, not recommendations for every resolution, frame rate, platform, or encoder. Choose bitrate and buffering according to the destination’s requirements and your latency and quality goals.

Do not confuse B-frame references with enabling B-frames
OBS’s Advanced NVENC Options documentation for OBS 31.0 describes B-frame-as-reference as a separate option. It applies to HEVC and AV1, and OBS says it can slightly improve quality with no performance impact; that statement is about this reference mode, not a blanket claim about enabling conventional B-frames or their latency. OBS recommends the option when using multiple B-frames. OBS Advanced NVENC Options (31.0)
Common problems and fixes
- The platform disconnects the stream: Check its ingest documentation for a B-frame prohibition. For Amazon IVS Real-Time OBS/RTMP publishing, set B-frames to 0; do not assume requirements carry across services.
- Interaction feels delayed despite a low-latency preset: Disable conventional bidirectional B-frames if the workflow calls for it, then check other pipeline sources of delay, including GOP/keyframe interval, network, platform processing, and playback buffering.
- Quality gets worse after disabling B-frames: At the same bitrate, removing a compression tool can reduce quality. Check whether the destination allows a higher bitrate, or compare a supported low-latency encoding mode rather than treating zero B-frames as a free quality-preserving change.
- Encoder memory use or overload rises: Reduce B-frames or disable them and retest. B-frames require extra reordering buffers, though actual resource use depends on the encoder and settings.
- An FFmpeg option is rejected: Confirm the FFmpeg version, GPU, codec, driver, and NVENC support. NVIDIA’s cited unidirectional B-frame example requires FFmpeg 7.1 or later and a compatible setup.
