Then route the command and its options to your chatbot logic and return a response. You do not need a bot that reads every server message just to make slash commands work.
How Discord chatbot connections work
A Discord chatbot is built as a Discord application. Its application settings define how people install and invoke it; your code receives those invocations and produces replies. Discord supports application commands such as slash commands, which users deliberately call, and two mutually exclusive delivery routes for interactions: an outgoing HTTP webhook or the Gateway event connection. For a first chatbot, a slash command is a practical starting point: it avoids needing to inspect ordinary message content. Your application still needs to be available to receive commands, either at a public endpoint or through a running Gateway client.

On the app’s General Information page, note its Application ID and Public Key. The Public Key is used to verify signed interaction requests when you use an HTTP endpoint.

If your design needs a bot user—for example, a member-like presence in a server or Gateway access—open the app’s Bot page and create or configure its bot user. Keep the bot token secret: it authorizes API requests and must not be posted publicly or committed to source control. Load it from a protected environment variable or secret store instead.
Not every slash-command app needs a bot user. Discord’s OAuth2 guidance describes the applications.commands scope for application commands; the bot scope is for installing a bot user and includes the commands scope by default. Choose scopes and permissions to match what the app actually does. Do not request Administrator as a shortcut. Consult Discord’s OAuth2 documentation and the current permission settings when preparing installation.

Application commands are registered through Discord’s HTTP API. A slash command is a CHAT_INPUT command with a name and description; it can also define options that act as typed arguments, such as a question or topic for the chatbot.

Define the command name, description, and any options your handler needs.

Register it to a test guild while developing. Discord says guild commands update instantly, making them useful for iteration.

When it is ready for broader availability, register it globally. Global commands and guild commands have different scopes; choose based on where the app should be usable.

Discord’s quick-start demonstrates registration with npm run register, but Node.js is not mandatory. Use the API directly or a community library that fits your language and runtime. Command contexts, permissions, and registration details are documented in Discord’s Application Commands guide.
3. Choose how Discord delivers command interactions
Use exactly one interaction-delivery method for an app: either HTTP outgoing webhooks or the Gateway’s INTERACTION_CREATE event. Discord does not deliver the same interactions through both routes. This choice is separate from whether your command is guild-scoped or global.

HTTP endpoint route
In the Developer Portal, configure the application’s Interactions Endpoint URL with the public HTTPS address of your handler. Discord’s official quick-start uses a local Express server and a tunnel such as ngrok for development, with /interactions appended to the forwarding URL. The sample verifies request security headers and handles Discord’s PING verification request. A tunnel is a development convenience, not a substitute for a stable production endpoint.

Gateway route
Connect a bot client to Discord’s Gateway and handle INTERACTION_CREATE. The Gateway is a persistent connection, so the client must manage heartbeats and reconnects. Subscribe only to the event groups the app needs, using the appropriate intents. A supported Discord library can handle much of this connection machinery; the official Gateway documentation explains the connection and intent model.
4. Connect the interaction handler to chatbot logic
Once Discord delivers an interaction, your handler should identify the command, read its supplied option values, pass the relevant input to your chatbot logic, and return a valid interaction response. Keep the Discord transport layer separate from the chatbot’s response logic where practical: the same function that generates an answer can be called by either an HTTP handler or a Gateway event handler, while only one route receives Discord interactions.

Validate that the command and expected options are present before processing.

Handle errors deliberately so a failed model call or downstream service does not leave the interaction without a response.

Do not expose tokens, private configuration, or stack traces in user-facing replies.

5. Request only the access the chatbot needs
Slash commands are explicit invocations. They do not require a bot to read arbitrary ordinary messages in a server. If the design instead responds to every message or uses text-prefix commands, it may require message-content access and related configuration or policy review. Keep permissions, installation scopes, and Gateway intents limited to actual features; do not ask for broad access merely to make setup easier.
Discord’s announcement dated June 10, 2026 says apps with 10,000 or more total users need review to retain access to certain server data, with annual reapplication for continued access. Discord also notes that text-command apps may redesign around slash commands or apply to retain access. These are policy requirements for the relevant data access, not a threshold for creating a basic slash-command bot. Check the current Developer Portal settings and Discord’s server-data access policy announcement before launch.

The command does not appear: confirm that registration succeeded and that you installed or authorized the app in the same guild or scope where you are testing. Guild commands are useful during development because Discord says they update instantly; global commands are for broader availability.

Discord rejects the Interactions Endpoint URL: check that the endpoint is publicly reachable over HTTPS and correctly answers Discord’s verification request. For local development, use a tunnel and provide the full forwarded URL, including the route path.

HTTP interactions fail verification: verify requests using Discord’s signature headers and the app’s Public Key. Do not treat an unsigned request as a valid Discord interaction.

The Gateway client disconnects or misses events: check that the client maintains heartbeats and reconnects correctly, and that it subscribes to the event groups it needs. Review the configured intents against the app’s feature requirements.

A command works but cannot perform a server action: revisit the app’s installation scopes and requested permissions. Add only the permissions required for that action; Administrator is not a general fix.

The bot cannot read ordinary message text: slash-command access and ordinary message-content access are different. If reading server messages is truly essential, review the current privileged-data rules and app eligibility rather than assuming a bot token grants that access.
Do you need a dedicated device or hosting service?
No dedicated physical product is required by Discord’s documented setup. The implementation needs software and a way to receive requests: a public endpoint for HTTP delivery, or a running client and network connection for Gateway delivery. Managed hosting can be optional infrastructure if you need a bot to remain available continuously, but Discord’s setup does not prescribe a vendor.
