Use browser automation to make the consent choice the site offers, wait for the banner to close and the page to update, then capture the viewport, full page, or a specific element. With Playwright, there is no universal cookie-banner selector: inspect the target site and account for the possibility that its consent controls are inside an iframe.
Dismiss the banner by making a real consent choice
A reliable screenshot flow has four parts: load the target URL, find the site’s consent controls, select the choice appropriate to your task, and verify the resulting page state before capturing. Accepting, rejecting, or configuring consent are different choices; use the one your task requires and the controls the site actually provides.
Do not simply hide or delete the popup and call that consent. Removing the overlay may not record a choice, and content that depends on consent may still be missing. A later run may also show the banner again if the browser state does not preserve the choice. The exact persistence behavior depends on the site.
Use Playwright to inspect, dismiss, and capture
The following JavaScript example is an intentionally incomplete template: replace the consent selector and choice with controls from the site you are automating. It does not assume that any particular button label or selector works everywhere.

})();Playwright’s basic documented flow navigates to a page before capturing it. For a predictable overlay, Playwright recommends explicitly waiting for and dismissing it in the ordinary test flow rather than relying on page.addLocatorHandler(). That handler is for unpredictable overlays and is checked during relevant actions or assertions; it does not run merely because time passes. See Playwright Page documentation.
Inspect the consent controls before choosing a locator
Use page inspection or accessible roles and names to identify the actual button or settings control. A locator that works on one site may fail on another because markup, labels, vendors, and frame structure vary. If the visible consent widget is embedded in an iframe, identify the relevant frame and scope the locator to it; a main-page locator will not find an element in a separate frame.

A forced click does not fix a wrong-frame locator. In Playwright, forcing an action skips some actionability checks, but does not move the search into another frame. Likewise, JavaScript running in the main document cannot simply query the DOM of a cross-origin iframe. These are Playwright-specific diagnostics; inspect the page and use its frame-aware APIs where needed. See the implementation discussion at the Playwright cookie-consent guide.

After clicking, verify that the banner has closed and that the content you intend to capture is present. Waiting only for the popup to disappear can be insufficient if the page updates asynchronously or consent gates some content. Choose a site-specific signal, such as a known content element becoming visible, rather than assuming a fixed delay is always enough.

Review the image and troubleshoot failures
- The button locator times out: inspect whether the control is inside an iframe. If so, use a locator scoped to the relevant frame instead of searching only the main document.
- A forced click still fails: forcing does not change which frame the locator searches. Correct the frame scope first, then review visibility and other actionability conditions.
document.querySelectorfinds no button: if the control is in a cross-origin iframe, code in the parent document cannot directly query its DOM. Use the automation framework’s frame-aware API.- The overlay is gone but expected content is missing: hiding the banner may not have recorded consent or triggered consent-dependent content. Use the site’s real control and wait for the expected content signal.
- The banner appears inconsistently: for a predictable prompt, explicitly wait for it and dismiss it in the normal flow. For an unpredictable overlay, a locator handler may be appropriate, but it only runs during relevant actions or assertions.
- The screenshot includes the popup: confirm the dismissal completed before capture, then inspect the image. A successful click alone does not prove the banner closed or the intended content loaded.
For visual layout, inspect the saved screenshot. For identifying controls and understanding page structure, use accessibility snapshots or DOM inspection rather than relying on an image alone.

Can I use the same Playwright consent selector on every website?
No. The selector and any required frame targeting depend on each site’s consent interface.
