Anthropic said the models were already deployed in classified environments and highlighted their handling of classified material, intelligence and defense documents, mission-critical languages, and complex cybersecurity data.
What Claude Gov is—and who it is for
Claude Gov is Anthropic’s name for a custom set of Claude models intended for U.S. national-security work. In its June 6, 2025 announcement, Anthropic said access was limited to operators in classified environments and described the models as built exclusively for national-security customers. That does not mean anyone can download or sign up to use them through the ordinary Claude consumer service.

The announcement positions the models for tasks such as strategic planning, operational support, intelligence analysis, and threat assessment. Those are potential uses, not a guarantee that a model independently makes operational decisions. The available information does not specify which agencies use each model, what classified systems they connect to, or what human review rules apply to a particular deployment.
What Claude Gov is designed to do differently
Anthropic’s stated distinction is mission adaptation: the company says the models were shaped with direct feedback from government customers. The June 2025 announcement identified four areas of specialization:

- Classified material: Improved handling of classified information, including fewer refusals when engaging with it. This is a claimed difference in model behavior, not permission to enter classified information into an unapproved tool.
- Intelligence and defense documents: Greater understanding of documents and information used in those contexts.
- Languages and dialects: Enhanced proficiency in languages and dialects Anthropic considers critical to national-security operations.
- Cybersecurity data: Improved interpretation of complex cybersecurity data for intelligence analysis.
Anthropic said Claude Gov models underwent the same rigorous safety testing as its other Claude models. That statement does not establish that every deployment has identical safeguards, nor does it replace agency-specific testing, authorization, or human oversight.
How government access and hosting differ from ordinary Claude
Claude Gov is not simply a toggle in a retail Claude account. Access and data handling depend on approved government environments and the relevant service authorization. Anthropic’s announcements describe multiple government pathways, but they do not establish that every model is available through every pathway.

FedRAMP High and DoD Impact Levels describe authorization or security requirements associated with services and workloads. Anthropic’s FAQ emphasizes that AI models are software components rather than cloud services. As a result, a hosting environment’s authorization should not be read as a blanket certification of every model, integration, or end-to-end workflow running within it.

What the DoD agreement and federal procurement mean
Two-year DoD prototype agreement
On July 14, 2025, Anthropic announced that the Department of Defense’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office awarded it a two-year prototype other transaction agreement with a $200 million ceiling. A ceiling is the maximum amount under the agreement, not evidence that the full amount was spent or guaranteed. The announced work includes frontier-AI prototypes, fine-tuning on DoD data, analysis of adversarial uses, and exchanges of performance and operational feedback. Anthropic also cited a Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory deployment in a context involving 10,000 scientists and researchers; that figure describes the people served by the laboratory context, not the number of Claude Gov users.

Federal procurement route
In August 2025, the U.S. General Services Administration added Anthropic’s Claude to its Multiple Award Schedule, alongside other leading AI products. This gives federal buyers a procurement route; it does not mean every agency has purchased Claude Gov or is authorized to use it for classified work.

- Established: Anthropic announced a national-security-focused model set in June 2025, described four mission-oriented areas of improvement, and said it was already used by operators in classified environments.
- Established: Anthropic later announced specific government hosting and procurement pathways, including AWS GovCloud, Google Vertex AI with Assured Workloads, and the GSA Multiple Award Schedule.
- Not established by these announcements: Public access to Claude Gov, a complete list of participating agencies, the precise classification level supported by every model, detailed model-by-model performance results, or deployment-specific operating procedures.
For a government customer, the practical questions are therefore not just which Claude model is involved, but which authorized service hosts it, what data and classification level that environment permits, what contract or procurement route applies, and what agency controls govern model use.
