The “VR cops” in this story were members of a VRChat roleplay group, not sworn officers. In a report published on March 11, 2022, Futurism described simulated patrols and arrests by the Loli Police Department (LPD), including one captain’s account of making virtual evidence appear to come from another user. Futurism said no one was actually arrested or hurt by the roleplay.
Who were the “VR cops”?
The group was the Loli Police Department, a police-themed roleplay community in VRChat. Futurism’s March 11, 2022 report, which drew on reporting by Input, said the group was founded in 2018 as a joke. Members used avatars and acted out police encounters in VRChat worlds, sometimes staging arrests. The report also described members using anime-style avatars associated with the word “loli”; that context describes the group’s presentation, not an indication that its members were actual officers or that the events involved real arrests.

Futurism reported that the community had nearly 11,000 Discord members at the time, attributing the figure to Input. That is an approximate 2022 membership count, not a current figure or an independently verified population statistic. Futurism’s report

One captain’s statement, as quoted by Futurism from Input’s reporting, is the basis for the headline’s claim. Karet, identified as an LPD captain from Texas, described producing a virtual bag of marijuana and making it look as if it had come from another user’s pocket: “I can pull out a bag of weed and make it look like it came out of someone’s pocket,” Karet told Input, according to Futurism. “They always say it’s not theirs.”

This was a description of simulated evidence in roleplay. The report does not document a real-world evidence case, and the quoted account should not be generalized to every member or every interaction. The word “brag” is the headline’s characterization of the captain’s statement.
Were people actually arrested in the metaverse?
No—not in the legal sense described by the report. Participants acted out police encounters inside VRChat; Futurism explicitly said users were not actually arrested or hurt by the roleplay. A staged arrest in a virtual world is not a law-enforcement action, and the article does not say that real police were involved.

How did other VRChat users respond?
The Futurism article also quoted another LPD member describing hostile reactions, including profanity and responses to police violence in the United States. The member said, as quoted by Futurism from Input: “We absolutely get abuse,” and added that the group received more responses such as “Fuck the police” when police violence was in the news. This is the member’s account of reactions to the roleplay, not a measured or independently verified survey of VRChat users.
