Its distinguishing service feature is a set of 16 replaceable laser-source modules at the front of the system. That makes the sources accessible without treating them like optics buried inside the switch—but each source serves a group of ports, so a source failure can affect more than one connection.
What is Delta DD-S64C80?
ServeTheHome reported the DD-S64C80 as a Delta system built around Broadcom’s Tomahawk 5 Bailly CPO technology at OCP Summit 2024. The event-floor report describes 128 front-facing 400GbE ports. Broadcom’s BCM78909 silicon supports several possible port configurations, including 128 × 400GbE, but that broader capability list should not be read as proof that the displayed Delta system was operating in every mode. ServeTheHome’s event report and Broadcom’s BCM78909 product page describe the system and chip, respectively.

How do pluggable light sources work with co-packaged optics?
In a conventional pluggable-optics arrangement, each port uses a transceiver plugged into the switch’s front panel. In Bailly CPO, optical engines are integrated with the switch platform, while laser light is supplied by separate modules. Delta’s displayed system had 16 pluggable light sources—eight on each side of the front panel. ServeTheHome describes one source for every eight ports; Broadcom identifies the BCM78909 laser module as ARLM-96F8DMZ and says the platform has 16 field-replaceable laser modules.
The arrangement separates the light source, which can be replaced, from the optical engines packaged with the switch. The practical benefit is front-accessible source maintenance rather than having to service a source integrated with the CPO assembly. The tradeoff is the failure blast radius: a source serves a group of ports, so its failure may affect several ports rather than only the individual link associated with a conventional per-port transceiver. ServeTheHome presents this as a serviceability tradeoff, not as a quantified reliability finding.

What are the fiber and connector details?
The report shows a dense bank of single-mode LC fiber connections rather than a row of conventional per-port pluggable transceivers. Broadcom specifies 128 duplex LC connectors and traditional single-mode fiber routing for Bailly. Its product information says each fiber can carry four 100G links using CWDM at nominal wavelengths of 1271 nm, 1291 nm, 1311 nm, and 1331 nm. These are platform details; they do not establish a particular patch-cable length or compatibility for every deployment.
For a physical connection, the relevant category is single-mode LC duplex fiber. Match the cable and link specification to the installed equipment rather than assuming that a connector type alone guarantees compatibility.

What does Broadcom claim about power and area?
Broadcom’s March 14, 2024 Bailly announcement compares the optical interconnect with pluggable-transceiver solutions. Broadcom states 70% lower optical-interconnect power consumption and an 8× improvement in silicon-area efficiency; the same announcement also describes the optical-interconnect power savings as more than 70% versus standard pluggable optics. These are vendor comparisons, not independent test results or measurements of total power for Delta’s DD-S64C80 system. Broadcom’s announcement describes Bailly as a 4RU air-cooled system with 128 400G FR4 ports and 128 duplex LC connectors, and notes support for replaceable remote laser modules: Broadcom’s Bailly announcement.

What did the OCP Summit appearance establish?
Broadcom said it would showcase Tomahawk 5–Bailly as a 51.2-Tb/s CPO switch at the 2024 OCP Global Summit. That corroborates the event context, but it is not a separate specification for Delta’s DD-S64C80. ServeTheHome’s account is an event-floor description, not a benchmark or an independent reliability evaluation. Broadcom’s OCP Summit announcement supplies the event context.

Is the DD-S64C80 available to buy?
Broadcom’s BCM78909 product page currently labels the chip “Limited Release” and lists distributor inventory as unavailable on that page. That status does not establish whether the complete Delta DD-S64C80 is available through every sales channel. The chip page’s status can change, so it should not be treated as a definitive statement about system availability.
