Android Developer options is a hidden screen inside Settings that holds advanced controls for building, debugging and profiling apps. It is a collection of device settings. It is not a separate app, and it is not a single “developer mode” switch. Most people never need it, and you can use a phone for years without opening it.
What Developer options actually is
Android Developers describes the screen as the place for on-device settings that help you debug and profile apps. Developers use it to connect a phone to a computer, test how an app behaves under different conditions, and watch performance. Which controls appear depends on the Android version and on the phone maker’s interface, so two phones can show different lists.

The screen is a menu of unrelated switches. Turning the menu on does not change how the phone behaves. Each option does something only when you switch it on.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to enable Developer options
The menu is normally hidden until you reveal it. Android’s consumer guidance says to tap Build number several times, then go back to Settings, where the developer settings now appear. The exact location of Build number and the exact tap count can vary by device, so treat the steps below as the common pattern rather than a guarantee.

- Open Settings.
- Find Build number. It is usually under an “About phone” style section. If you can’t find it, type “Build number” into the Settings search box.
- Tap Build number repeatedly until the phone says developer settings are enabled. You may be asked for your PIN, pattern or password.
- Return to the main Settings screen and look for Developer options. On many phones it sits under System.
For where to find the USB debugging switch once the menu is visible, Android Developers gives release-specific paths. On Android 9 and later its example is Settings > System > Advanced > Developer options > USB debugging. Android 8.x and earlier use different paths, and manufacturers often rearrange or rename these sections. If your labels don’t match, search Settings or check your device maker’s current instructions.
The settings people confuse
| Setting | What it does | When you need it |
|---|---|---|
| USB debugging | Allows an ADB (Android Debug Bridge) development connection between the phone and a computer | Installing, running or debugging apps from a computer |
| OEM unlocking | Permits the bootloader to be unlocked, which is relevant to flashing and custom-software workflows. Support varies by device | Only when following device-specific bootloader or flashing instructions |
| Profiling, rendering, animation and mock-location controls | Change or reveal app behavior for testing and observation. Availability depends on software and device | Only for a specific testing task |
USB debugging
According to Android Developers, a device can be set up for development over USB or over Wi-Fi. With USB debugging on, the computer must still be authorized. The phone shows an authorization dialog, which is a security safeguard, and ADB commands can’t run until the device is unlocked and you accept it. Only approve computers you trust.

Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

OEM unlocking is not another name for USB debugging. The Android Open Source Project’s Android Flash Tool documentation lists the two as separate requirements for a flashing workflow. You don’t need OEM unlocking to use ADB for ordinary app development. Bootloader changes can affect your data and whether the device remains usable, so follow your manufacturer’s official procedure rather than a generic guide.

Do you need to change anything?
For everyday use, no. Enabling the menu doesn’t oblige you to touch any switch in it. Change a setting only when you have a task that calls for it, such as connecting to a computer for development, and leave the rest at their defaults. If you turned on USB debugging for a job that is finished, switching it off again is a reasonable habit.
