Uber builds an ETA in two stages. A routing engine picks a route and adds up predicted travel times for each road segment. A machine-learning model then corrects that baseline using patterns it has learned from real trips. Uber’s newer traffic-forecasting layer feeds the routing stage with fresher segment-level speeds. The rest of this article explains each stage, what the app means by “ETA”, and which published figures are safe to cite.
The pipeline, step by step
1. The road network is a graph
Uber’s 2015 engineering post “ETA Phone Home: How Uber Engineers an Efficient Route” describes roads as a graph. Intersections are nodes and road segments are edges. Each edge carries a travel time or distance, and rules such as one-way streets, turn restrictions, turn costs and speed limits shape which routes are allowed and how costly they are. That post is background from 2015. It is not a specification of Uber’s current engine.

2. Segment travel times are measured and forecast
Uber Engineering’s May 19, 2026 post, “Scaling Real-Time Traffic Forecasting with a Graph-Aware Transformer,” describes the current traffic layer, called DeepETT. GPS signals from trips are mapped onto a global road graph. From them, Uber derives how long each segment actually took to traverse. The system then forecasts traversal times for segments over several future time horizons. It refreshes those forecasts every few minutes.
3. Routing uses the forecasts
When a rider requests a trip, the routing engine takes the latest segment-level estimates and selects a fast route. The sum of the segment times is the initial arrival-time estimate.

4. Machine learning corrects the baseline
Uber’s February 10, 2022 post, “DeepETA: How Uber Predicts Arrival Times Using Deep Learning,” explains that a post-processing model predicts the residual. That is the gap between the route-based estimate and what actually happened. Inputs include origin, destination, request time, real-time traffic and the type of request, such as a rideshare pickup or a delivery dropoff. The model does not replace the routing engine. It learns systematic errors the routing engine makes and adjusts for them.
This idea predates DeepETA. Uber’s 2018 post on Michelangelo, its machine-learning platform, already described machine-learning corrections applied to base ETAs.

5. The displayed number keeps updating
Uber Help’s “How do ETAs work?” article says the destination ETA updates continually once a trip begins.

- Before the ride: the ETA estimates how long nearby drivers should take to reach your pickup location.
- After the trip starts: the ETA is your arrival time at the destination, and it updates during the ride.
These are two different arrival events, so the two numbers come from different trips (the driver’s approach versus your journey). Uber’s help page says plainly: “Please note that ETA times are estimates and not guaranteed.” It names traffic and road construction as things that can change travel time. Separate delivery guidance, “How do arrival times work?”, says the app route accounts for current traffic and other delays. That is practical advice and does not reveal the underlying features.

Uber’s published figures, and how far they stretch
All of these are Uber’s own numbers. None has been independently verified.
- 6% improvement in arrival-time accuracy for long trips (Uber Engineering, 2026), tied to the DeepETT traffic forecasting system.
- 19% increase in forecast variance explained (Uber Engineering, 2026).
- More than 2 million real-time forecasts per second (Uber Engineering, 2026).
- An estimated $100 million in incremental annual revenue, which is Uber’s own estimate linked to DeepETT (2026).
- Average ETA error reduced by more than 50% “in some cases” (Uber, 2018), describing the rollout of machine-learning corrections to base ETAs.
Read these narrowly. The 2026 metrics describe the traffic-forecasting system. They do not mean every ride’s ETA is 6% more accurate, and they do not promise any particular rider a given error reduction. The 2018 figure is a historical, case-specific result and not a current universal one.

What is not publicly known
Uber has not published the full production feature list, model weights, city-level calibration or an independent evaluation of current rider-level error. Its posts describe particular generations and layers of the system, and the implementation changes over time. It would be wrong to say every ETA anywhere comes from one unchanged model. The transparency report covers the United States only, and help pages may differ by locale.
