What Apps Do You Need to Travel in Mainland China?

Prepare the essential apps for mainland China: Alipay and WeChat, 12306, local maps, rides and mobile data—plus card, cash and passport-check backups.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a mainland China trip, prepare Alipay and WeChat for payments, China Railway 12306 for train tickets, Amap or Baidu Maps for navigation, and a ride-hailing option such as DiDi Greater China. Arrange mobile data before you rely on any of them, and keep a physical bank card and some RMB cash as backups. Foreign-card linking and passport checks can take extra steps, while city services and app features vary.

Which apps should you prepare before leaving?

Trip need Apps or services What to know
Payments Alipay and WeChat Both may support eligible international cards. Setup, fees, limits, and available functions depend on the platform and your circumstances.
Intercity trains China Railway 12306 The official train-booking service; passport-based real-name verification is required for online ticket purchases.
Maps Amap (Gaode Maps) or Baidu Maps Both are commonly used in China; Amap supports English, but language and features differ.
City rides DiDi Greater China, or ride-hailing inside Alipay or WeChat Registration and payment compatibility can depend on your phone number, card, and location.
Mobile data International roaming or a local SIM Arrange connectivity before depending on navigation, payments, or ride booking. Public Wi-Fi is only a limited backup.

Install the apps and sign in before departure where possible. Try card linking and any identity checks while you have time to resolve problems; doing so does not guarantee every function will work once you arrive.

How should you prepare to pay?

Set up Alipay and WeChat

Alipay is a useful starting point for QR payments and may also offer transport QR codes and ride-hailing access. WeChat is useful for messaging, Weixin Pay, and services inside official accounts or mini-programs. Government guidance says foreign visitors can link eligible international cards to these payment platforms, but an issuer may need to verify the card. Not every mini-program or payment function is guaranteed to work the same way for every overseas account. State Council guidance on payment services for overseas visitors and its 2025 guide for visitors and expatriates describe the available options.

Follow the current in-app prompts for card binding, fees, and limits rather than relying on old screenshots or blanket assurances. People’s Bank of China guidance reported by Xinhua and the State Council in 2024 set a US$5,000 single-transaction limit and a US$50,000 annual cumulative transaction cap for overseas visitors using mobile payment platforms, raised from US$1,000 and US$10,000. These are policy figures reported in 2024, not a guarantee of what a particular card or platform will approve today; check current terms before travel.

Keep payment backups

Carry a physical bank card and some RMB cash in addition to your phone. Chinese government guidance describes mobile payment, bank cards, and cash as visitor payment options; any one method may fail because of card verification, connectivity, or acceptance at a particular merchant. The State Council’s payment guidance also discusses expanding cash acceptance.

How do you book trains with a foreign passport?

Use China Railway 12306, the official rail service, for online train bookings. Foreign travelers can use a passport, but must complete real-name identity verification before buying tickets online. Allow time for that check rather than assuming the app will approve the passport instantly. If online verification or purchase does not work, a station ticket office is an alternative for verification or buying a ticket. See the government visitor guide for the passport and booking guidance.

Which map and ride apps work for getting around?

Choose a local map

Amap (Gaode Maps) and Baidu Maps are commonly used in China. A consular travel-facilitation brochure says Amap supports English, but map language and features differ. Save important destinations as Chinese names or addresses when possible: that can make it easier to enter a location or show it to someone if a search in English is unclear. The brochure covers both mapping options and other visitor services: travel-facilitation brochure from the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles.

Pick a ride-hailing backup

Government visitor guidance identifies DiDi Greater China and ride-hailing through Alipay or WeChat as options. A Hunan provincial guide says DiDi Greater China supports foreign phone numbers and international bank cards for registration, but that does not guarantee registration or payment will succeed for every traveler. Availability and language can vary by city and account. Hunan’s ride-hailing guide and the government visitor guide describe these routes.

Public-transport QR codes may be available through payment apps, but support depends on the city or operator. Check the local transit system’s instructions instead of assuming one QR code works nationwide.

How should you arrange mobile connectivity?

Before departure, ask your carrier about international roaming in mainland China and activate it if you intend to use it. Alternatively, ask a local telecom provider about buying a SIM with your passport after arrival. A consular brochure notes that some airports, stations, shopping malls, and hotels offer public Wi-Fi, but it is not a dependable connection for navigation or payment. It does not establish the reliability of specific eSIM providers, so confirm any plan’s terms and coverage with the provider. The consular brochure’s connectivity guidance outlines roaming, local SIMs, and public Wi-Fi.

What optional apps help with food and attractions?

You do not need to install every local service in advance. For dining discovery or delivery, the consular brochure lists Dianping, Meituan, Ele.me, and WeChat or Alipay mini-programs as options. Attraction tickets may be offered on official websites or through mini-programs; popular sights may require reservations, while on-site purchase may also be possible. Check the attraction’s own current booking instructions before setting out. These are optional, destination-dependent services, not essential nationwide installs. The brochure’s travel-service overview covers food and attraction booking options.

What is specific to Beijing?

For a Beijing visit, GO BEIJING and the English version of Jingtong are destination-specific additions. The Beijing municipal government says these platforms integrate visitor services such as transport, ticketing, hotels, and English-language maps. Its 2026 guidance lists 16 languages on GO BEIJING and 39 services available through the integrated platform; these figures describe that Beijing offering, not nationwide apps or service coverage. Beijing municipal guidance on visitor digital services has the details.

Does mainland China advice apply to Hong Kong or Macau?

No. This shortlist and setup advice concern mainland China. Hong Kong and Macau have different service and network contexts, so check current local transport, payment, and connectivity options separately rather than assuming mainland apps or instructions apply there.
