What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For a quick, dependable copy, connect your unlocked Samsung Galaxy phone to the computer with a data-capable USB cable, allow access to phone data, and choose the phone’s file-transfer USB mode. On Windows, open the phone in File Explorer and copy the files you need. A phone charging over USB does not necessarily mean it is ready to transfer files.
Copy files from a Samsung phone to a Windows PC with USB
- Connect the phone. Use a USB-C to USB-C or USB-A to USB-C cable that matches the computer’s port. The cable or adapter you need depends on the PC. Samsung’s step-by-step guide is written for Australian Galaxy variants; labels and options can differ by model, software version, and region. Samsung’s USB transfer instructions include the regional qualification.
- Unlock the Galaxy and allow data access. Approve the phone’s prompt to allow access to phone data. If no prompt appears, open the USB notification on the phone and select Transferring files/Android Auto, Transferring files, or the file-transfer/MTP option available on your version.
- Open the phone on the PC. In File Explorer, select the connected phone in the sidebar or under connected devices, then open its internal storage.
- Find and copy the files. Common folders are DCIM > Camera for camera photos and videos, Download for downloaded files, and Documents for documents. Copy or drag your selections to a folder on the PC. For media saved by an app, Gallery’s item details may show its file path; follow that path in the phone’s storage.
- Wait for the copy to finish. Keep the cable connected until copy windows have closed and the transfer is complete.
If the PC does not show the phone
- Unlock the phone and check that you approved access to phone data.
- Open the USB notification and select a file-transfer option such as Transferring files or MTP, rather than a charge-only mode.
- Try a cable known to support data, another USB port, and a direct connection to the PC instead of a hub. Samsung warns that “Not all USB cables can transfer data” in its Smart Switch transfer troubleshooting guidance.
- If the phone is still not recognized while using Smart Switch, Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance includes reconnecting the phone and reinstalling the device driver through Smart Switch.
Choose another transfer method when USB is not convenient
| Method | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| USB file transfer | Copying selected files and folders directly | Needs a data-capable cable, a suitable port, and the correct phone USB mode. |
| Link to Windows or Bluetooth | Wireless sharing with a supported Windows setup | Features and compatibility vary; Bluetooth requires paired devices. |
| Quick Share or Samsung Flow | Wireless sharing where supported | Availability depends on device and software compatibility. |
| Smart Switch | A broader backup or restore | Requires computer software, a compatible device, and supported data types. |
| Manual copy on Mac | Moving selected files to a Mac | Steps and available options can differ by device and software. |
Wireless sharing with Windows
Samsung lists Link to Windows and Bluetooth as wireless options. Link to Windows can provide access to recent images and file sharing on Windows 10 or 11, but the available features depend on software version, region, phone model, and device-management restrictions. Bluetooth is another option for paired devices when it suits the files and transfer.

Samsung also describes Quick Share and Samsung Flow for sharing or transferring media. Check compatibility for your specific phone and computer before relying on either method.
Back up or restore with Smart Switch
Use Smart Switch for PC or Mac when you want a broader backup or restore rather than a few manually selected files. Connect the phone with a data-capable cable, allow access when prompted, and select Backup or Restore in the computer app. Device and file-type support matters, and Samsung says Chromebooks are not compatible.
