There is no universal list of appliances that every smart plug is forbidden to control. As a practical safety rule, avoid connecting space heaters and other high-load appliances unless both the appliance and smart-plug manufacturers explicitly approve that exact setup. Keep major appliances on a suitable direct wall connection when their instructions call for it. The plug’s marked limits matter, but a wattage rating alone cannot establish that remote or scheduled switching is safe.
How to decide whether an appliance is suitable
Smart plugs let you switch a connected appliance on or off remotely, and sometimes on a schedule. They change how an appliance is controlled; they do not make it lower-powered or remove the need to follow its operating instructions. Before connecting anything, check both the appliance manual and the smart plug’s label and instructions.

- Check the appliance instructions. Look for restrictions on plug type, direct wall connection, unattended operation, or remote starting. If the maker says to use a direct wall outlet, do not put a smart plug between the appliance and outlet.
- Check the smart plug’s exact ratings. Compare its rated current and wattage with the appliance’s specifications. Do not assume that a plug is suitable simply because one stated wattage figure appears high enough.
- Consider how the appliance operates. Startup demand, motors or compressors, continuous operation, and the consequences of an unexpected restart can matter. The available guidance does not establish that a wattage rating by itself resolves those issues.
- Assess remote and scheduled control. Do not automate an appliance if safe operation depends on local supervision or if the manufacturer does not approve remote switching.
Electrical Safety First advises following appliance manufacturers’ instructions and warns that overloading socket outlets or extension leads can be dangerous, particularly with high-powered appliances such as kettles, irons, and heaters. It puts the warning this way: “Plugging too many appliances into a socket-outlet or extension lead can be dangerous, especially high-powered appliances such as kettles, irons and heaters.” That is not a universal smart-plug compatibility list; apply the appliance and plug makers’ specific instructions to your setup.

Confirm the smart plug’s stated maximum current and load, then compare those limits with the appliance’s own rating and instructions. Check whether either maker rules out smart sockets, remote operation, timers, extension accessories, or unattended use. If the manuals do not clearly cover the proposed arrangement, treat that uncertainty as a reason to ask the maker—not as proof that a higher-rated plug will solve it.

Appliances that call for particular caution
Space heaters and other portable heaters
Treat space heaters as a strong caution category. The U.S.-based Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) advises plugging space heaters directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip, because those accessories could overheat and cause a fire. ESFI also says not to leave a space heater unattended. Its guidance says: “Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord or power strip, which could overheat and result in a fire.”
That advice does not specifically name smart plugs, and extension cords and power strips are not identical to smart plugs. Still, because a smart plug adds a control device between heater and outlet, do not use one with a heater unless both manufacturers explicitly approve that exact combination. Never use remote control as a reason to leave a heater running unattended. A timer that turns a heater on while nobody is present also changes the circumstances in which the heater operates; it does not replace any supervision or placement directions in the heater’s instructions.
Electrical Safety First gives radiator or fan heaters as examples of appliances that can draw up to 3000 W. This is an example rating, not a universal figure, a smart-plug threshold, or a guarantee that a particular heater can safely be switched by a particular plug. Check the actual model’s label and instructions.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Kettles and other high-power countertop appliances
Electrical Safety First lists kettles up to 3000 W and air fryers up to 2600 W as examples of high-powered appliances. These figures vary by model and geography; they are not compatibility limits for smart plugs. A plug’s stated maximum load does not, by itself, establish that a kettle or air fryer is approved for remote or scheduled switching. Follow both manufacturers’ instructions and avoid automation if the appliance’s safe operation depends on someone being present.
These examples help explain why the actual rating matters: an appliance can use a substantial amount of power even though it is a familiar countertop device. But comparing the number printed on an appliance with the smart plug’s maximum is only one part of the check. It does not establish that the appliance maker permits an intermediary device, or that starting it remotely is appropriate. Electrical Safety First’s warning about high-powered kettles, irons and heaters concerns overloaded outlets and extension leads; do not silently turn it into a categorical claim that every smart plug is prohibited for every kettle or air fryer.

Portable air conditioners and appliances with motors or compressors
Electrical Safety First lists portable air conditioners up to 2000 W as an example. Actual ratings vary. Because a wattage comparison alone does not settle suitability, do not treat a smart plug as acceptable for an air conditioner—or another motor- or compressor-driven appliance—unless the appliance and plug manufacturers permit it and their instructions cover the intended use.
For these appliances, check more than the ordinary running figure if the documentation provides additional requirements. The available guidance does not establish a universal startup-load rule or a smart-plug threshold for motors and compressors, so do not infer compatibility from a single number or from a plug’s advertised “heavy duty” description. If the appliance instructions call for a direct outlet, follow that direction.

Refrigerators and freezers
Electrical Safety First notes that refrigerators and freezers run 24 hours a day and recommends installing them close to a wall socket rather than using an extension lead. It does not explicitly prohibit smart plugs. The practical concern is dependable, uninterrupted supply: an accidental switch-off or a schedule that cuts power can interrupt continuous operation. Keep the appliance connected as its manufacturer directs, and do not use a smart plug unless the appliance maker explicitly allows it.
Do not set a routine that turns a refrigerator or freezer off simply because the smart plug makes that possible. The 24-hour operating pattern is why the location of a suitable socket and dependable power matter. If you are considering a smart plug for monitoring or control, check the appliance instructions and the smart plug’s instructions first; the cited guidance does not offer a blanket ban or claim that all models behave alike.
Washing machines
Electrical Safety First says washing machines use a lot of power, advises against using extension leads, recommends following the appliance maker’s instructions, and says not to leave a washing machine unattended while it is running. Its extension-lead advice does not establish that every smart plug is forbidden. However, do not remotely start or schedule a washing machine if its instructions or safe operation require supervision, and use a smart plug only if both manufacturers explicitly approve the setup.

In particular, do not assume that a remote on command is equivalent to operating the machine at its controls. The available guidance does not say that every washer may be remotely started or resumed after an interruption. If the manufacturer’s instructions do not make the intended use clear, do not automate the cycle; ask the appliance maker or a qualified electrician.
Why a wattage rating is not a complete safety check
A smart plug’s marked maximum load is an important limit, not a blanket compatibility certificate. It does not prove that the appliance maker permits an intermediary control device, that the plug is suitable for the appliance’s operating characteristics, or that remote switching is safe. The cited guidance provides example appliance wattages but no comparative smart-plug tests or universal appliance threshold.
Electrical Safety First’s examples—radiator or fan heaters up to 3000 W, kettles up to 3000 W, portable air conditioners up to 2000 W, and air fryers up to 2600 W—are examples from its guidance, accessed in 2026. They are not measurements for every model or country, and they do not tell you which smart plug to buy. A number below the plug’s printed maximum is not, by itself, an approval for that pairing.
Use the complete set of instructions and specifications, not a single number. If the appliance manual or smart-plug documentation is unclear, connect the appliance directly as specified and ask the manufacturer or a qualified electrician before using a smart plug. Do not try to resolve uncertainty by adding an extension lead or power strip; those are separate accessories with their own restrictions, and the cited safety advice warns against overloading them.
What remote control changes
A smart socket can make a non-smart appliance remotely switchable. Electrical Safety First describes this feature: “Even if your appliance isn’t ‘smart’, a smart socket could turn it into a smart device, allowing you to switch it on or off remotely.” That convenience also creates a new way for an appliance to start or stop without someone beside it. Electrical Safety First notes that connected-device use can depend on internet and Wi-Fi. A connection being available does not make unattended operation safe, and a schedule or remote command should never override the appliance’s supervision requirements.

Before setting a routine, ask whether an unexpected restart could create a hazard, whether continuous power is important, and whether the appliance is designed to resume operation after power is restored. If the instructions do not answer those questions, do not automate it. Also consider what happens if a scheduled command, remote command, or loss and return of power leaves the appliance in an unexpected state. The available guidance does not establish that every device will restart in the same way, so follow the exact model’s instructions rather than assuming it will remain off or resume safely.

Use the table as a cautious decision aid, not a list of automatic bans. The sources reviewed do not provide a universal appliance-by-appliance prohibition, a smart-plug product comparison, or a test showing that one plug rating makes a particular device safe. The controlling facts are the two products’ instructions, their actual ratings, how the appliance must operate, and whether remote switching changes safe use.
Guidance differs by country
The examples and advice above come from UK-oriented Electrical Safety First material and U.S. ESFI guidance. Socket types, electrical codes, and product labels vary by location. Follow local requirements and the instructions supplied with the specific appliance and smart plug; do not treat extension-lead guidance from one country as a substitute for local rules.
In particular, ESFI’s direct-wall advice for space heaters is specific guidance about heaters and extension cords or power strips; it is not a statement that every smart plug is an extension cord, nor does it settle smart-plug compatibility for every country or product. Likewise, Electrical Safety First’s appliance examples are not universal ratings. When local labeling or a product manual is stricter than a general example here, follow the product instructions and applicable local requirements.

What appliances should you never connect to a smart plug?
There is no universal ban list in the guidance reviewed. Use particular caution with space heaters and other high-load appliances, and do not connect them unless both the appliance and smart-plug manufacturers approve that exact setup. Follow any direct-wall or supervision instructions in the appliance manual.
Best Value
Can I plug a space heater into a smart plug?
ESFI advises plugging a space heater directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip, and says not to leave it unattended. Its guidance does not specifically name smart plugs, so avoid using one with a heater unless both manufacturers explicitly permit the arrangement. Remote control is not a reason to leave a heater unattended.
Does a high-wattage rating mean a smart plug is safe for an appliance?
No. Compare the smart plug’s marked limits with the appliance’s actual specifications, but a wattage match alone does not establish that the appliance maker allows a smart plug or that remote switching is safe. Check both manuals and consider supervision, continuous operation, and unexpected restarting.
Can a refrigerator or freezer use a smart plug?
Electrical Safety First says refrigerators and freezers run 24 hours a day and recommends locating them close to a wall socket rather than using an extension lead. It does not explicitly ban smart plugs. Follow the appliance maker’s connection instructions, prioritize dependable continuous power, and do not schedule interruptions.

Can I use a smart plug with a washing machine?
Electrical Safety First says washing machines use a lot of power, advises against extension leads, and recommends following the appliance instructions and not leaving a machine unattended while running. That does not establish a universal smart-plug ban, but use one only if both manufacturers approve it and do not automate operation that requires supervision.
Are extension-cord warnings the same as smart-plug warnings?
No. Extension cords, power strips, and smart plugs are different devices. The cited extension-lead and power-strip warnings do not by themselves prove that every smart plug is forbidden. Treat them as a reason to follow the exact appliance and plug instructions and avoid assuming compatibility.
The Bottom Line
Do not choose a smart plug for a high-load appliance based on wattage alone. Be especially cautious with space heaters, keep appliances on direct wall connections when their instructions require it, and preserve continuous or supervised operation where needed. If either manufacturer’s instructions are unclear, leave the appliance connected as specified and ask the manufacturer or a qualified electrician.
