Apple Universal Control lets you use one Mac’s keyboard, mouse, or trackpad to control that Mac and up to two nearby Mac or iPad devices. You can move the pointer between screens, type on the active device, and drag supported content between devices—while each continues to show its own apps.
What Universal Control does
Universal Control shares input across nearby Apple devices; it does not combine their screens. Your Mac and iPad remain separate devices with their own displays and apps. Move the pointer from one screen to another, type on whichever device is active, and drag supported items between them. Apple describes the feature as using one keyboard and mouse between Mac and iPad.

For example, Apple says you can drag a drawing from an iPad into Keynote on a Mac, or drag a photo from a Mac into Messages on an iPad. You can also move files between Macs or into Files on iPad for compatible apps. If a prohibited symbol appears while dragging, that destination does not support the item in that context. Apple’s Universal Control guide describes these uses.
Universal Control versus Sidecar
Choose based on what you want the iPad to show. Universal Control leaves the iPad on its own Home Screen and apps, while letting the Mac’s input devices control it. Sidecar instead extends or mirrors the Mac display on the iPad. Apple’s Sidecar documentation explains the display-extension workflow.

Requirements and compatibility
Apple lists macOS Monterey 12.4 or later for compatible Macs and iPadOS 15.4 or later for compatible iPads. Meeting the minimum software version alone does not guarantee compatibility: Apple’s model list includes specific Mac years and exceptions, including the 13-inch MacBook Air (2017). Check Apple’s current Universal Control requirements and supported-model list for your exact devices.
Apple lists these iPad families as supported: all iPad Pro models, iPad (6th generation or later), iPad Air (3rd generation or later), and iPad mini (5th generation or later). The same Apple support page provides the Mac details.

- Accessories are sold separately and subject to availability. Compatibility varies by generation.
- All devices must be signed in to the same Apple Account, with two-factor authentication enabled.
- Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff must be on.
- Devices must be within 10 metres (30 feet), according to Apple’s requirements.
- iPad cellular sharing and Mac Internet sharing must be off.
- The Mac needs a keyboard and mouse or trackpad. If it has no built-in input devices, connect them separately. Apple’s iPad guide notes this requirement.
How to enable and connect Universal Control
- On Mac: Open System Settings, choose Displays, then enable the Universal Control option that allows the pointer and keyboard to move between nearby Mac or iPad devices. On older macOS versions, use System Preferences > Displays.
- On iPad: Open Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity or AirPlay & Handoff, then turn on Cursor and Keyboard. Labels vary by software version. Apple’s setup instructions show the current paths.
- Wake and unlock the devices. Move the Mac pointer past the edge of its screen toward the other device; continue through when the connection cue appears. You can also select a nearby device from Display controls.
- In Mac Displays settings, arrange the displays to match their physical positions. This makes pointer movement follow the way the devices are placed on your desk.
When Universal Control will not connect
If a device does not appear or the pointer will not cross over, work through Apple’s checks:
- Confirm that both devices meet the supported-model and software requirements.
- Verify that they use the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication, and that Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff are enabled.
- Bring the devices closer. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance recommends trying within 1 metre (3 feet).
- Make sure both devices are awake and unlocked, and that iPad cellular sharing and Mac Internet sharing are off.
- Turn Universal Control off and back on, then restart the devices if needed.
- Check whether a VPN or third-party security software is interfering with local connections. The Mac firewall must not be set to block all incoming connections.
