An HDMI cable connects compatible devices—such as a TV and game console, laptop and monitor, or player and projector—so they can send digital video, audio, and data between them. The cable does not add resolution, refresh rate, HDR, or gaming features: both devices and their settings must support the features you want.
What HDMI means and what the cable carries
HDMI stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface. It is a digital connection used across consumer electronics, computers, mobile devices, automotive systems, and commercial AV equipment. HDMI Licensing Administrator says almost 14 billion devices enabled with HDMI technology have shipped since the first HDMI specification was released in December 2002. HDMI Licensing Administrator

An HDMI cable carries signals between a source device and a display or other compatible equipment. It is one part of a connection: the source, display, ports, and settings determine which video and audio features are available.

How to choose an HDMI cable
- Identify both devices. Note what you are connecting, such as a console and TV or a laptop and monitor.
- Check the mode and features you need. Look up the supported resolution, refresh rate, and relevant HDMI features for both devices. Choose a cable category that meets the requirements of the complete connection.
- Match the connectors. Check the shape and size of each device’s HDMI port before buying. HDMI materials discuss Type A, C, and D connectors, as well as the special Type E automotive connector. HDMI cable types
- Plan the route and length. Measure the needed run and consider bends or other installation constraints. The appropriate length depends on cable type and construction; the official guidance does not establish one universal maximum for every cable.
- Verify the category when bandwidth matters. Check the official cable name printed on the cable jacket and the appropriate package logo or certification label. For Ultra High Speed and Ultra96 cables, scan the QR label to verify the model and certification information. Cable identification guidance
HDMI cable categories at a glance
| Official cable name | Stated capability or use | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Standard HDMI | Tested for 720p or 1080i and earlier applications; the official overview says it does not support later resolution, refresh-rate, and bandwidth requirements. | An older category that may not meet the needs of modern high-bandwidth devices. Source |
| High Speed HDMI | Up to 10.2Gbps; designed for 1080p and beyond, including 4K at 30Hz, 3D, and Deep Color. | Match its stated capability to the exact modes your devices require. Source |
| Premium High Speed HDMI | Certified for full 18Gbps bandwidth. The certification program tests bandwidth and EMI and is intended for supported 4K/UltraHD use cases that may include 4K60, BT.2020, and HDR. | Look for the official category and verification label rather than relying on a marketing adjective. Source |
| Ultra High Speed HDMI | Up to 48Gbps for configurations including 4K120 and 8K60 formats. | For a 48Gbps requirement, check for its official name and certification label. Source |
| Ultra96 HDMI | Up to 96Gbps for HDMI 2.2 applications. HDMI Licensing Administrator identifies formats including 8K60 full chroma and 4K240 full chroma at 10- or 12-bit color. | Choose it when the supported devices and target configuration call for this higher bandwidth, not simply because it is the newest category. Bandwidth figures are category ceilings, not promises that every device combination will deliver every listed format. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s current overview identifies HDMI 2.2 as the latest specification update in its guidance accessed October 7, 2026. The associated Ultra96 category supports up to 96Gbps; Ultra High Speed remains the category for configurations up to 48Gbps. HDMI 2.2 and Ultra96

How certification helps you identify a cable
HDMI Licensing Administrator says cable products must carry an official cable name on the jacket, and packaging should show the appropriate logo and/or certification label. For Ultra High Speed and Ultra96, certified models must pass testing at an HDMI Forum Authorized Testing Center; the matching label and QR code let buyers check certification information. The program also describes in-market auditing. Ultra High Speed certification Ultra96 certification
The Premium High Speed program tests bandwidth and electromagnetic interference (EMI) and uses a verification label with a unique QR code. Premium High Speed certification Labels help establish the cable category; they do not establish that the connected devices support a particular picture or audio feature. Device capability and configuration still matter.

Common selection mistakes to avoid
- Buying by an HDMI version number alone. Check the cable category and the actual supported mode on each device instead.
- Assuming the cable creates a feature. A cable cannot make an unsupported display, source, or setting deliver a higher resolution, refresh rate, HDR, or gaming feature.
- Ignoring connector fit. Confirm both ends match the ports on the devices; some HDMI connectors are smaller or intended for specialized uses.
- Trusting vague performance language. For higher-bandwidth categories, look for the official name and applicable label rather than an unverified claim in a product description.
