Choose Sanity if you need custom content structures and control over a separately built website; Hashnode if you want a managed, blog-focused workflow with a documented route to a custom frontend; and Dev.to if community publishing and distribution matter more than running your own headless content system. An API alone does not make a platform a full headless CMS.
What kind of publishing setup do you need?
These services solve different publishing problems, so the best choice depends less on feature checklists than on where you want to spend effort: shaping a content system, building a custom site, or reaching readers in an existing developer community.

- Build and control your own publishing destination: start with Sanity if structured content and frontend flexibility are priorities.
- Use a managed developer-blog workflow but render content elsewhere: investigate Hashnode’s headless option and verify its current availability and terms.
- Publish within a developer community: use Dev.to as a community destination or an additional channel, not as a substitute for a custom CMS unless its current product documentation supports your specific needs.
None of these choices guarantees traffic, search rankings, or domain authority. Those outcomes depend on the content, distribution, implementation, and audience.

| Platform | Best fit | Headless and frontend approach | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sanity | Publishers who need structured, configurable content and control of the presentation layer. | Its developer documentation covers structured content, GROQ workflows, frontend integrations, and building a blog with Astro. See Sanity developer guides. | You take on the work of building or maintaining the frontend and configuring the content system. Current pricing and plan entitlements are not established here; check Sanity pricing. |
| Hashnode | Developers who want a blog-centered managed workflow and may want to render posts in a custom site. | Hashnode documents fetching content with GraphQL and using a Next.js starter kit, including an example of serving a blog on a custom domain or path. See its headless CMS guide. | The guide’s headless-mode and team-blog availability details may be dated. Confirm current access, plan conditions, and pricing before designing around them. |
| Dev.to / Forem | Writers whose priority is publishing to a developer community. | Forem provides a public API, but API availability does not establish the custom content-modeling and presentation control expected of a full headless CMS. See Forem API documentation. | A community publishing model is different from owning a custom publishing stack. Confirm current product capabilities if you need to build a separate frontend. |
Sanity: choose it for content modeling and frontend control
Sanity is the strongest candidate of the three when the blog is one part of a larger site or publishing system and you need content structures tailored to your work. Its developer-guide catalog covers structured content, GROQ, frontend integrations, and an Astro blog guide, supporting a configurable approach rather than a fixed article-only workflow.
#1 Best Overall
- Standard A5 portable size: 5.9 inches × 8 inches, compact and easy to fit into a briefcase or handbag, allowing you to take it out anytime to record ideas and organize work while commuting or traveling, saying goodbye to bulky and inconvenient devices.
- Durable and long-lasting: Featuring a 2mm thick black hardcover, this notebook has a substantial feel and is resistant to pressure and drops, effectively protecting the inner pages from damage. The black and gold cover design is simple yet elegant, combining a professional look with a stylish aesthetic, making it suitable for professionals, students, and everyday use.
- Comfortable writing experience: Contains 80 sheets (160 pages) of cream-colored lined paper. The thick paper prevents ink bleed-through and is suitable for various writing instruments such as fountain pens, gel pens, and ballpoint pens. The soft cream color effectively reduces visual fatigue during prolonged writing, protecting your eyesight and making it ideal for long hours of work and study.
- Double-wire spiral binding: Utilizing a double-wire spiral binding process, the binding is secure and prevents pages from falling out or becoming loose; it allows for a full 360° lay-flat opening, eliminating the need for forceful pressing while writing, enabling seamless recording on both left and right pages, and facilitating smooth page turning for easy reference to previous content.
- Multi-scenario adaptability: The lined page design is suitable for various scenarios such as daily office work, meeting minutes, project planning, study notes, schedule management, and idea collection; it meets the diverse writing needs of professionals, students, teachers, and freelancers alike.
That flexibility comes with responsibility: you need to implement and support the presentation layer. Treat framework integrations and features such as preview or draft workflows as implementation details to confirm in the current documentation for your chosen setup, rather than assuming every integration behaves identically.
Do not choose on the basis of an assumed price or quota. The live pricing page is the appropriate place to check current plan information, but the available evidence does not establish specific figures or entitlements.

Hashnode: a managed blog with a documented custom-frontend route
Hashnode’s headless guide describes using GraphQL to render blog content in a custom frontend, with a Next.js starter kit and an example of deploying a blog on a custom domain or path. Its example uses Vercel; that is an implementation example, not a requirement to use that hosting provider.

That status may no longer reflect the current product. Before choosing this architecture, confirm that headless access is currently available for your account and blog type, what plan conditions apply, and whether the documented workflow still matches the current product. Hashnode’s pricing details cannot be treated as established from the evidence here.

Dev.to: community publishing is not the same as a headless CMS
Forem, the software behind Dev.to, maintains API documentation. That makes API-based interactions possible, but it does not by itself mean you can define the content model, editorial workflow, and presentation layer as you would with a dedicated headless CMS.
Dev.to is a natural fit when publishing into a developer community is the goal. If you need a standalone site with a custom frontend and control over how content is structured, assess those requirements separately and use a platform whose current documentation supports them. You can also keep a canonical blog elsewhere and use a community platform as an additional distribution channel; verify the current publishing and canonical-link options before relying on a particular setup.

Questions to settle before committing
- How much implementation work can you own? A custom frontend gives you control, but also adds build and maintenance responsibilities.
- Do you need custom content types? If posts must fit a broader structured-content system, evaluate Sanity’s schema and delivery approach. If standard blog publishing is enough, a managed workflow may be simpler.
- Is community distribution central? If yes, Dev.to’s role as a community publishing destination may matter more than headless capabilities.
- What does portability mean for your project? Verify export, canonical URL, custom-domain, and data-retention terms directly with the provider. The available evidence does not establish comparable terms across all three.
- What is included in the plan you can actually use? Confirm current regional pricing, API or headless eligibility, and feature gates on live product documentation. Do not rely on old comparisons for volatile plan details.
Recommendation by use case
- Choose Sanity to investigate first when custom schemas, structured content, integrations, and control of the frontend are essential and you can support implementation work.
- Choose Hashnode to investigate first when you want a managed developer-blog workflow plus the possibility of a custom-rendered site. Verify current headless access and terms before committing.
- Choose Dev.to when community publishing is the primary objective, or consider it as a complementary channel alongside a separately managed canonical blog.
