No iPhone radio tuner for picking up local FM broadcasts over the air is documented in Apple’s current iPhone guide. You can listen to supported radio streams in the Music app, but streaming depends on internet connectivity and regional availability. If you need over-the-air FM, use a separate radio receiver.
What “radio tuner” means on an iPhone
An over-the-air FM tuner receives local broadcasts directly from radio signals. It does not need Wi-Fi or cellular data. A radio stream, by contrast, is delivered through an app over an internet connection. Apple’s iPhone guide documents listening to radio in Music by streaming; it does not document a built-in FM tuning function.

There is historical context, but it does not settle the hardware details of every iPhone. In a November 13, 2017 letter, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai wrote that “Most, but not all, cellphones have an FM tuner as part of the chipset that enables Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.” That broad observation was not an inventory of iPhone models. Apple’s response, reported at the time, said iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 lacked FM chips and antennas designed for FM reception. That statement applies to those models and that date, not automatically to later generations.

Find a broadcast station
In Music, search for a station by its name, call sign, frequency, or nickname, or browse local and international broadcasters. Apple says this option does not require an Apple Music subscription, though an Apple Account sign-in is required. Availability varies by country or region and by station.

Choose between streaming and over-the-air FM
- Choose streaming if you have internet access and the station or service is available where you are. It is the option Apple documents for listening on iPhone.
- Choose a separate portable FM radio if you need to receive FM broadcasts without relying on Wi-Fi or cellular service. Check the receiver’s supported bands, power source, portability, and audio output against your needs.
The FCC chairman’s 2017 letter described FM reception as a potential way to access emergency information when cellular service is unavailable. That is historical context, not a guarantee that a particular station or receiver will work in a specific emergency. If independent reception matters, a separate receiver is the straightforward choice; the sources here do not establish that a current iPhone-compatible add-on tuner provides over-the-air FM.
