An AI can help plan experiments, analyze results and, in a suitably automated laboratory, direct some physical experiments in response to measurements. These are bounded capabilities, demonstrated in particular tasks and setups. They do not show that a general-purpose AI can independently do the full work of a scientist in any laboratory. Human expertise remains essential for interpreting and validating results and making safety decisions.
What counts as an “AI scientist”?
The term covers several different kinds of system, and their abilities should not be confused. One may work with scientific literature and software tools; another may generate and evaluate experiments in a computer simulation; a third may be connected to laboratory robots and instruments. The 2025 Nature Communications perspective uses the term broadly for autonomous systems that can access domain resources, plan and act, from in-silico analysis to physical procedures.

| System type | What it works with | What it may do | What the example does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software or tool-using agent | Literature, databases, code and supplied data | Help brainstorm, select analytical tools, write or run code, and analyze results | That it has performed or validated a physical experiment |
| Computational research workflow | Simulated or computational experiments | Generate research ideas, run analyses and assemble outputs such as visualizations or a draft paper | That it can operate wet-lab equipment or produce a validated physical result |
| Robot-connected laboratory system | Instruments, samples and newly measured physical data | Run defined procedures, measure outcomes and use feedback to help select a next experiment | That it can handle arbitrary equipment, unexpected conditions or every stage of scientific work |
When assessing a claim about an AI scientist, first ask whether it concerns text and code, a simulation, analysis of supplied measurements, or physical manipulation and measurement. Each step toward direct interaction with a lab adds requirements for compatible equipment, reliable protocols, sensors and feedback.
What can an AI scientist do today?
Help with literature, coding and data analysis
AI tools can assist with brainstorming, prediction, coding and analysis. Tool-using agents may select analytical tools and plan procedures. What they can do depends on the sources and data they can access, the quality of their domain-specific tools, and how well the tools are integrated into the workflow. An analysis produced by software is still an analysis to check, not evidence that the system has independently verified its conclusions.

Propose and prioritize experiments in a defined search space
AutoSciLab uses active learning to choose experiments, distills results into latent variables and learns interpretable equations. Its authors report rediscovering principles of projectile motion and phase transitions in the Ising model, as well as a nanophotonics result using closed-loop feedback from noisy experiments. These demonstrations show what a framework can do on specified problems; they are not evidence of universal scientific autonomy.
Direct some physical experiments through automation
When connected to laboratory robotics and instruments, an AI system can be part of a loop that runs procedures, collects measurements and uses the results to inform subsequent steps. The U.S. Department of Energy describes combining robotics, real-time analysis, intelligent feedback, hypothesis generation and data curation; its account of BacterAI describes laboratory automation for closed-loop microbial optimization. In a programmable workflow with useful measurements, repeatable execution and rapid feedback can help increase the volume of data and the repeatability of experiments, as DOE states.

Automate parts of a computational research workflow
The 2024 arXiv preprint introducing The AI Scientist reports a workflow that generated ideas, wrote and executed code, visualized data, drafted papers and simulated review in three machine-learning subfields. The authors report a cost of less than $15 per paper for their experimental setup. That figure applies to the reported computational ML experiments; it is not the cost of running a wet lab or proof that the resulting paper constitutes a validated scientific discovery.

One successful demonstration does not mean the system generalizes
The OECD report notes that automated systems are usually given a hypothesis to test and identifies knowledge extraction and representation as bottlenecks. Automating a specified experimental loop is a narrower achievement than automating the whole scientific cycle across fields, equipment and unforeseen conditions. Results from one task or laboratory therefore should not be treated as evidence that the same system can conduct arbitrary research.

Promising output is not proof of fundamental discovery
In a simplified molecular-genetics discovery task, Ding and Li reported that ChatGPT-4 produced incremental discoveries but did not make a fundamental discovery from scratch. They also found that the model could appear overconfident about success. This is a result from one study, task and model; it does not prove that every AI system is incapable of original discovery. It does illustrate why claims about originality need to be judged against the specific task and evidence.
A plausible interpretation is not independent validation
A fluent explanation, an attractive plot or a completed protocol does not by itself show that a result is correct, reproducible or causally explained. The National Academies’ chapter on AI for scientific discovery stresses human involvement in experimental design, interpretation of conclusions and causation, validation of science and mathematics, reference checking and judgments about research validity. A system can help produce an answer without establishing that the answer is sound.

Laboratory safety expertise cannot be assumed
A 2025 LabSafety Bench abstract reports that its authors evaluated 19 language and vision-language models using 765 multiple-choice questions, 404 realistic laboratory scenarios and 3,128 open-ended tasks; no evaluated model exceeded 70% accuracy on hazard identification. This is a benchmark-specific result for that model set, not a universal score for all AI systems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe 2025 Nature Communications perspective also describes potential biological, chemical, physical, information and environmental harms from AI systems acting in scientific settings. It recommends human regulation, agent alignment and regulation of actions involving environmental feedback. In practice, safety controls must be designed around the actual materials, equipment and procedures; a model’s confident answer is not a substitute for trained review.

How to judge an AI-lab claim
Before treating a system as capable of independent laboratory work, check what it actually does and where human oversight remains:
- Scope of autonomy: Does it suggest ideas, analyze data, choose an experiment, execute a procedure, or manage several of these stages?
- Data source: Is it working with a simulation, supplied measurements or data it has just generated through a physical experiment?
- Domain and task: What specific field, problem and search space were tested? A result on one defined problem does not establish performance across science.
- Equipment and feedback: Which robots and instruments are integrated? Can measurements guide the next action, and can the workflow detect or recover from failed steps?
- Interpretability and reproducibility: Can researchers inspect the reasoning or procedure, repeat the experiment and check the result independently?
- Human review and safety: Who approves protocols, checks hazards, judges validity and decides whether a result supports the conclusion?
These are practical comparison questions, not a published certification scale. They help distinguish a useful automated component from a claim that an AI has replaced a scientist.
Where human scientists remain responsible
AI can make parts of research faster or more systematic, especially when the task is well specified and instruments produce reliable feedback. But deciding what question matters, whether a result is meaningful, whether another explanation fits the data, and whether an experiment is safe still requires accountable scientific judgment. Treat AI output as a proposal or workflow result to inspect—not as self-validating evidence.
