High RAM use does not automatically mean memory is causing a game to stutter. Check Task Manager while the problem is happening, then use what you observe to decide whether to close background apps, test for software conflicts, investigate paging, or consider a compatible RAM upgrade.
Check what is happening when the game stutters
Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc while reproducing the stutter. In Processes, look for apps using substantial memory, CPU, or disk resources. In Performance, review the overall memory, CPU, and disk graphs. Microsoft recommends checking these resource areas when investigating slow performance: Tips to improve PC performance in Windows.

Pay attention to whether resource use changes at the same time as the stutter. The process using the most memory is not automatically the cause: it may be expected for the game or another app. High memory percentage by itself also does not establish that Windows is paging heavily or that more RAM will fix the symptom.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTry low-risk fixes first
Close apps you are not using
Save your work, then close unneeded applications and browser tabs. Restart Windows, launch the game, and keep other apps closed for a comparison. If the stutter changes, background workload may be contributing; if it does not, continue diagnosing rather than assuming memory capacity is the answer.
#1 Best Overall
- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
- VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
- A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
Review startup apps
Disable only startup apps you recognize and do not need running in the background. Restart and check the game again. Avoid disabling unfamiliar system or security components just to lower the memory figure.
Install available updates
Check Settings > Windows Update for available Windows updates and optional driver updates. Updates can include fixes and performance improvements, but installing them is not a guaranteed cure for stuttering. Microsoft’s performance guidance recommends keeping Windows updated and reviewing resource-heavy processes at the link above.

Use a clean boot to test for software conflicts
If the stutter remains, a clean boot can help determine whether a non-Microsoft service or startup app is interfering with the game. Microsoft describes it as starting Windows with essential drivers and startup programs to make background conflicts easier to identify; its instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11: How to perform a clean boot in Windows.

- Before changing startup settings, note which items you disable so you can restore them.
- Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot steps, then test the game under the same conditions as before.
- If the game runs normally, re-enable disabled items systematically, testing between changes or groups until the conflict returns.
- Restore Windows to normal startup when finished.
A clean boot temporarily removes some functionality. Follow Microsoft’s instructions carefully: changing System Configuration settings incorrectly can make a computer unusable.

Investigate paging only when the evidence points there
Paging is Windows moving memory contents between RAM and storage. A high RAM percentage alone does not prove paging is the source of a game’s stutter. Microsoft’s guidance on virtual-memory counters warns that Pages/Sec can be misunderstood and points to Pages Output/Sec when investigating paging as a bottleneck. That guidance is written for Windows Server troubleshooting, not as a game-specific threshold or target: How to troubleshoot performance issues related to memory management.
For most players, begin with Task Manager’s resource graphs and the reversible checks above. Do not treat a momentary counter reading or a particular memory percentage as proof; look for sustained behavior that coincides with the stutter.

Decide whether more RAM is justified
An upgrade is worth considering when observation indicates a sustained capacity constraint and your workload would benefit from additional memory—for example, running a game alongside other demanding applications. Microsoft says “16 GB or more” may fit some high-performance needs, but its memory guidance is general and is not a minimum RAM requirement for PC gaming: All about computer memory.

Before buying, check the computer or motherboard documentation for supported memory generation, maximum capacity, and configuration. Also check the current requirements for the specific game; the right choice depends on the game, PC, and workload, not a universal gaming threshold. For an unexplained memory footprint, collect a trace
If the cause remains unclear after basic checks, advanced users can use Windows Performance Recorder and Windows Performance Analyzer to capture and inspect memory activity, including process working sets and driver allocations. This can help distinguish application memory use from driver allocations, but it is a specialist diagnostic step rather than a first fix. Microsoft’s guide was last updated in 2019: Analyzing Memory Footprint.
