What an AI Assistant Can and Cannot Do in Embedded Development

AI can help draft, explain, edit, and test firmware code, but developers still need to review changes and verify them with the real toolchain and target hardware.

AI assistants can draft and explain firmware code, answer questions about a codebase, propose edits, and suggest tests. They cannot establish that firmware is correct on an MCU: generated changes still need review, compilation, testing, security checks, and validation on the target hardware. A practical setup can use an AI-enabled editor alongside the established embedded toolchain for building, flashing, and debugging.

What an AI assistant can help with

GitHub describes Copilot as a tool for code suggestions, codebase questions, explanations, and work on assigned tasks. In an editor, its suggestions may complete a line, generate a block, or propose an edit; the developer decides whether to accept the change. These capabilities can help with routine implementation and navigating unfamiliar code, but a suggestion is not evidence that a change meets the firmware requirements.

Drafting and editing routine code

An assistant can propose code based on the prompt and the context it can access, including the files open in or available to the editor. For embedded work, useful context includes the project’s existing conventions, SDK headers, peripheral APIs, and relevant device documentation. More context can make a suggestion more relevant, but it does not guarantee that the code is correct for the selected MCU or board.

Explaining code and answering repository questions

An assistant can help explain a function, summarize code, or answer questions about files it can access. Treat explanations as hypotheses to check against the implementation and authoritative SDK or device documentation. Plausible but unsupported answers are possible.

Suggesting tests

Copilot can suggest tests, but GitHub warns that generated tests may omit scenarios. Review test assumptions and coverage, especially around boundary conditions, error paths, interrupts, timing, and hardware-dependent behavior. A generated test suite is a starting point, not proof of completeness.

What it cannot establish on its own

Text generation does not demonstrate that firmware works on physical hardware. An assistant cannot establish timing, electrical, interrupt, memory, peripheral, or safety behavior from a code suggestion alone. Those properties need to be checked against requirements and device documentation, then verified with build results, tests, debugging evidence, and target-level validation.

It may be wrong or insecure

GitHub Docs describes hallucinations as plausible output that is factually incorrect or unsupported, and warns that generated suggestions may be insecure. Review code, test it, and apply the same security practices used for human-written changes. Do not assume an assistant knows a register map, peripheral constraint, or project-specific rule unless its answer is verified.

It does not replace the compiler, debugger, or hardware

The distinction is especially important in embedded projects: AI can assist with the software work, while the actual toolchain and target remain responsible for demonstrating what builds and runs. A successful compile is not, by itself, proof of correct behavior on the device; likewise, an explanation or test suggestion is not a substitute for debugging and validation.

How AI fits with embedded IDEs and toolchains

NXP’s application note AN14859, Revision 1.0, published 5 November 2025, describes an example using an FRDM-MCXA346 board, VS Code with the GitHub Copilot extension, and the NXP SDK. It says AI-assisted programming tools primarily supported the VS Code ecosystem and had not yet integrated directly with traditional embedded IDEs such as MCUXpresso, Keil, or IAR at that publication date. This is a dated statement from NXP, not a guarantee about every assistant or the state of integrations today.

Use VS Code as an AI-assisted editor with an existing toolchain

NXP describes a “super editor” workflow in which VS Code provides AI assistance while a familiar embedded toolchain handles compiling, downloading, and debugging. The application note presents this approach as applicable alongside Keil, IAR, and MCUXpresso workflows. It lets a team try AI-assisted editing without assuming that the assistant replaces the tools already used to build and validate firmware.

Consider vendor-specific VS Code integration

NXP also describes an MCUXpresso for VS Code plugin that brings editing, compilation, downloading, and debugging functions into VS Code. The example shows one vendor’s approach; it does not establish equivalent support for every MCU, board, IDE, or AI assistant. Check the current documentation for the exact combination you intend to use.

  • Editor and MCU integration: Confirm support for the editor, chip family, board, and vendor SDK you use.
  • Project context: Determine whether the assistant can access the relevant repository files, headers, SDK APIs, and project conventions. Verify answers against the correct references.
  • Build and hardware path: Keep the actual compiler, flashing or download process, debugger, and hardware tests available.
  • Language and framework coverage: GitHub notes that suggestion quality varies with the volume and diversity of training data for a language. Do not assume equal quality across languages, frameworks, or embedded-specific APIs.
  • Review and security controls: Decide how generated changes will be reviewed, tested, and checked under your organization’s security and privacy practices.

These are practical evaluation criteria, not a measured ranking of assistants. Integration changes over time, so verify current vendor documentation rather than treating a dated compatibility statement as permanent.

A safe way to use generated firmware code

  1. Give the assistant bounded context. State the MCU or board, SDK, relevant interfaces, and the behavior required. Include authoritative project references where appropriate; do not treat supplied context as a correctness guarantee.
  2. Review the proposed change. Check APIs, types, error handling, initialization order, resource use, and assumptions against the project and device documentation.
  3. Build with the project’s real toolchain. Resolve compiler errors and warnings rather than assuming generated code is compatible because it looks plausible.
  4. Run reviewed tests. Check whether suggested tests cover relevant normal, boundary, and failure cases, and add missing tests.
  5. Debug and validate on the target. Use the project’s flashing, debugging, and hardware-validation process to verify behavior on the actual device.
  6. Apply security review. Examine generated code for unsafe behavior and follow the same security controls applied to other code.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

GitHub’s documentation describes Copilot’s stated capabilities and cautions; NXP’s application note provides a concrete vendor workflow. Together, they support using an assistant as a coding aid within an engineering process that retains review and hardware validation. They are not an independent comparison of assistants, a test of generated firmware quality, or proof that every coding assistant integrates with every embedded IDE.
