Data centers can reduce or replace diesel backup with battery energy storage, hydrogen fuel cells, or an integrated microgrid—but those options do different jobs. UPS systems and batteries can bridge an interruption immediately; fuel cells or other on-site generation can supply power for longer outages if fuel, storage, controls, and site infrastructure are in place. A microgrid coordinates several resources rather than acting as a single substitute generator.
How do the alternatives differ?
The first distinction is between ride-through—keeping critical equipment powered while the facility responds to a utility interruption—and supplying power throughout a longer outage. Microsoft describes an architecture in which UPS power keeps servers running until generators take over. A storage system may extend ride-through, but it is not automatically a long-duration generator replacement.

| Option | Role it can serve | Key limitation or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| UPS and battery energy storage | Immediate power during an interruption; a larger battery energy storage system (BESS) may support resilience and other facility energy needs. | Runtime depends on system power and usable stored energy, the critical-load profile, state of charge, and recharge plan. Microsoft’s architecture description explains the UPS-to-generator transition; Schneider Electric’s November 13, 2024 BESS white paper, version 1.1, addresses BESS in data centers. |
| Hydrogen PEM fuel cells | Generate electricity from stored or delivered hydrogen and can be considered for backup generation. | Fuel procurement, storage, delivery, system scale, safety, cost, and regulatory conditions must be addressed. The cited Microsoft and Equinix examples are a proof of concept and an announced pilot, not evidence of universal deployment. |
| On-site fuel cells and microgrids | Coordinate generation and storage to supply or manage power across a site or campus. | A microgrid needs integrated generation, controls, protection, and grid arrangements. Oracle’s cited Project Jupiter details are announced plans, not verified operating results. |
| Grid supply, clean generation, efficiency, and grid upgrades | Help meet the wider increase in data-center electricity demand and improve system capacity. | These are broader supply-side and demand-side measures; they are not necessarily a dedicated standby resource at a data center. |
Can batteries replace a diesel generator?
Batteries can provide fast, controllable power and are already part of data-center backup architecture. Whether they can cover a particular outage depends on the amount of critical load and the energy available after accounting for the system’s usable state of charge. The design also needs a plan for recharging if the utility supply remains unavailable.

That makes batteries a strong candidate for immediate ride-through and potentially longer support, but the cited material does not establish a universal battery-only replacement for generation during extended outages. A BESS proposal should state the supported load and duration under the facility’s actual operating conditions, rather than treating storage capacity alone as a runtime guarantee. Schneider Electric’s data-center BESS white paper provides context on the technology; it does not establish one duration suitable for every site.

Can hydrogen fuel cells provide backup power?
Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity from hydrogen, making fuel supply a core part of the backup design—not an afterthought. Their ability to serve as backup depends on the full system, including the fuel source and storage, delivery arrangements, safety provisions, and the load that must be served.
Microsoft’s proof of concept
Microsoft reported that a 250 kW Power Innovations hydrogen fuel-cell system powered a row of data-center servers for 48 consecutive hours in a proof of concept. The result demonstrates a tested application at that scale; it does not show that a fuel-cell installation is a general commercial replacement for diesel at any data center.

In the same report, Microsoft infrastructure engineer Mark Monroe discussed up to 100,000 kilograms of hydrogen for a hypothetical data-center scenario requiring 48 hours of backup. That is Microsoft’s scenario-specific estimate, not a standard sizing figure. Monroe also described an automotive fuel cell as having diesel-like reaction time and being able to reach full load within seconds; that is his explanation of the technology, not an independent comparative test. See Microsoft’s report on hydrogen fuel-cell testing.
Equinix’s announced Dublin pilot
On June 19, 2026, Equinix announced a 12-week pilot at its DB3 Dublin data center with two hydrogen-powered units capable of up to 0.5 MW of continuous power; the announcement said the units supported cooling systems. These are specifications and intended scope reported at pilot announcement, not a claim about results after the pilot. Equinix Managing Director Peter Lantry called the work with ESB an effort to prove hydrogen could be a practical alternative to diesel and gas in a live environment. Equinix described the solution as having zero direct on-site emissions at the point of use; that statement does not establish lifecycle emissions across hydrogen production and delivery. Details are in the Equinix pilot announcement.

What does a microgrid add?
A microgrid is a facility-level arrangement that can coordinate generation, storage, controls, protection, and the site’s relationship with the grid. It can include fuel cells, batteries, or other resources; it is not a single device that can be compared directly with a generator. Its value depends on how the components work together under normal conditions and during a utility interruption.
Oracle announced Project Jupiter in New Mexico as a planned fuel-cell-supported microgrid. Its April 27, 2026 announcement described a maximum installed Bloom Energy fuel-cell capacity of 2.45 GW. Oracle also projected that the design would reduce NOx emissions by approximately 92% compared with the gas turbines previously planned for the project, and described the fuel-cell approach as water-efficient. These are company-announced project specifications and expected impacts, not measured operating results. Read Oracle’s Project Jupiter announcement.

How do grid-scale clean energy and efficiency fit?
Clean generation and grid upgrades can help supply the growing electricity needs of data centers, but they do not automatically provide on-site standby power during an outage. The U.S. Department of Energy identifies solar, land-based wind, battery storage, and energy efficiency as among the rapidly scalable, cost-competitive ways to meet increased data-center electricity demand. It also identifies next-generation geothermal and nuclear among relevant resources. These are broader electricity-system and planning options, not all dedicated backup systems at the data-center boundary. See the Department of Energy overview.

Efficiency is relevant to backup planning because the critical load to support is a design input; it does not remove the need to define what must remain powered during an outage. Equinix cites a PUE global industry average of 1.54 from the Uptime Intelligence Global Data Center Survey 2025; 1 is the theoretical best score. PUE is an energy-efficiency metric, not a measure of backup reliability.

What should a data center compare before choosing?
There is no universal winner: an alternative must meet the site’s outage and operational needs while fitting its fuel, grid, space, and emissions constraints. Compare proposals against the same facility-specific assumptions:
- Critical load and autonomy: Which systems must stay online, at what load, and for how long?
- Response and transition: How quickly must power be available, and how is service maintained as the facility moves from its normal supply to backup?
- Energy and fuel logistics: What stored energy or fuel is needed, where will it be stored, how will it be replenished, and what happens if an outage lasts longer than expected?
- Resilience and maintenance: How will the system be tested and maintained, and how does the design account for component failure or unavailable fuel?
- Site and safety constraints: What footprint, equipment access, storage, permitting, and safety provisions does the proposed installation require?
- Environmental effects: What are the on-site emissions and water implications, and what is known about upstream fuel production and delivery?
- Grid interaction and lifecycle cost: How will the system operate with the grid, and what are its installation, operating, fuel, replacement, and integration costs over its life?
The cited sources do not provide a comparable independent lifecycle-cost table for diesel, BESS, fuel cells, and microgrids, so they do not support declaring one option universally cheapest or most reliable. The Department of Energy notes that data-center power projections evolve alongside AI use and efficiency, reinforcing the need to assess the facility and its local grid rather than choose by technology label alone.
