Secure an AI data center by controlling who can enter sensitive spaces and administer systems, separating workloads and services into purpose-based trust zones, and monitoring the traffic and changes that cross those boundaries. Treat the facility, its IT and AI infrastructure, and any building systems as one operational environment: a control that disrupts power, cooling, safety, or performance can create a security problem of its own.
What makes AI data-center security different?
An AI facility combines familiar enterprise security needs with specialized infrastructure for model training, inference, and related applications. Its data, software, and hardware all need protection for confidentiality, integrity, and availability. NIST’s AI data-center guidance describes this architecture in relation to traditional high-performance computing (HPC), including differences in hardware, software, workflows, and storage. The practical implication is to design around the facility’s actual systems and communications, rather than assuming that a conventional office network map describes the whole environment.

NIST SP 800-239 is an initial public draft, published July 27, 2026—not a final standard. Its abstract says it “conducts a threat and security gap analysis of AI data centers and provides basic recommendations.” NIST’s AI security page, updated August 14, 2026, describes AI security and resilience as an area of active research where challenges and potential solutions are changing rapidly. Treat the draft as useful, evolving guidance, not as a binding checklist or settled consensus.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with three questions: who can reach the facility or administer its systems; which systems need to communicate; and what evidence will show when access or communication is abnormal? The answers should fit the data center’s workload, performance needs, and safety requirements.

How should you control physical and administrative access?
Physical entry and logical administration are different trust boundaries. A person may be authorized to enter one part of a facility without being authorized to change cluster configurations; an administrator may need remote access without unrestricted physical access. Design, approve, and review these permissions separately.
Restrict entry to sensitive spaces
Use access control appropriate to the sensitivity and operational role of each space, such as the facility perimeter, data halls, network rooms, and areas containing power or cooling equipment. Practical controls include authorizing entry according to job duties, handling visitors through an accountable process, and keeping records that can be reviewed after an event. These are design considerations, not a complete AI-specific badge or visitor checklist prescribed by NIST.
NIST’s OT security guidance identifies physical access-control systems among the components relevant to operational technology (OT). Because data-center IT and building systems can be interdependent, access procedures and security changes must not interfere with facility functions or emergency response. Do not assume a particular credential technology, biometric method, or staffing pattern is universally required.

Limit administrative sessions
Assign permissions by role and task, and use strong authentication. Route privileged work through managed administrative entry points rather than allowing direct, uncontrolled access from ordinary user networks. Keep separate accounts or permission levels for routine work and high-impact changes where the environment supports them, and review who retains access as duties change.
Record privileged access and configuration changes in a way that supports investigation. NIST SP 800-215 provides a foundation for secure enterprise network access, including zero-trust approaches; it is a design reference, not a prescribed access-control product or a substitute for deciding which administrators need which permissions.
How do you segment an AI data-center network?
Build boundaries around purpose and risk, then allow only the communications needed for real workloads. Begin with an inventory and a data-flow map; do not start by copying a generic zone diagram. Example zones may include management and control planes, administrative workstations, user-facing services, compute and training resources, storage, external connectivity, and facility OT where present. These are design examples, not a NIST-mandated taxonomy.

- Inventory systems and dependencies. Identify the assets, owners, services, data stores, and facility systems in scope. Include the management paths and dependencies required to provision, operate, and recover workloads.
- Map required flows. For each connection, record its source, destination, purpose, and owner. Include cluster, storage, administration, user-facing, and external communications that the actual workload requires.
- Set boundaries and default-deny unnecessary traffic. Choose network or workload boundaries that match the risk and operating model. Define permitted flows explicitly and log denied traffic so unexpected attempts can be investigated.
- Control exceptions and changes. Give exceptions an owner and a review path. Review firewall and access-control-list (ACL) changes, protect management access to network devices, and keep configuration baselines and diagrams current.
- Validate against real workloads. Test the rules against required training, inference, storage, and facility operations. Measure performance and reliability effects before enforcing a boundary that could disrupt critical traffic.
CISA describes segmentation options including router ACLs, stateful inspection, firewalls, demilitarized zones (DMZs), and virtual LANs (VLANs). NIST SP 800-215 also discusses microsegmentation and zero-trust network access (ZTNA). These approaches can be combined; none should be assumed suitable for every accelerator fabric or interconnect without validation.
Which segmentation approach fits each boundary?
Choose controls by the trust boundary they enforce, the traffic they can observe, their operational burden, and the failure they are intended to contain. The following comparison describes the role of each approach, not a vendor ranking. CISA’s guidance covers network-level controls; NIST SP 800-215 discusses microsegmentation and ZTNA.
| Control approach | Typical boundary | What it helps do | What to validate |
|---|---|---|---|
| VLANs and router ACLs | Broad network segments | Separate groups of systems and restrict routed traffic between them. | Whether routes and rules allow unintended paths, and whether permitted and denied traffic is visible. |
| Firewalls and stateful inspection | Network zones, DMZs, and ingress or egress points | Enforce policy between zones and inspect connections at managed boundaries. | Rule ownership and lifecycle, logging, performance, and whether exceptions undermine separation. |
| Microsegmentation | More granular workload or system boundaries | Apply narrower separation where broad network zones are not sufficient. | Policy complexity, workload changes, operational skills, and effects on cluster communications. |
| ZTNA and identity-aware access | User or administrator access to services | Make access decisions around identity and access to particular services rather than relying only on network location. | Identity lifecycle, managed access paths, visibility, and how the approach fits the services being protected. |
Evaluate candidate controls against isolation strength, performance and reliability, visibility, rule and exception burden, and failure containment. A useful design limits the routes by which one compromised account, host, or segment could reach critical assets. Segmentation is containment, not a replacement for endpoint hardening, identity controls, patching, or incident response.

What should you monitor?
Collect and correlate evidence from network devices, hosts, relevant cloud services, and access systems. Protect the logs against unauthorized changes or deletion, and make them usable by the people responsible for investigation. CISA recommends retaining and securing logs, and identifies intrusion detection as useful for spotting command-and-control and other suspicious network behavior. Its communications-infrastructure guidance also recommends logging denied traffic.
Prioritize visibility at trust boundaries, where activity is more likely to show an attempted expansion of access or an unexpected dependency:
- Administrative logins, authentication failures, and privileged actions.
- Allowed and denied traffic between segments, especially unexpected connections.
- External ingress and egress, including unusual communications or data movement.
- Network, access-control, and security-policy changes, with the actor and time recorded.
- Relevant physical access events and changes to facility systems, where available and operationally appropriate.
This is a practical monitoring set, not a verbatim official checklist. Tune alerts to the environment, assign an owner to each alert path, and define how responders will preserve and correlate the associated records. Monitoring should not impose unsafe or disruptive behavior on OT or introduce unacceptable latency to high-performance systems.

How do you keep the controls effective?
Segmentation can limit lateral movement, but user error, policy non-adherence, or a device connected across segments can defeat the intended boundary. CISA’s ransomware guidance and its advisory on common cybersecurity misconfigurations reinforce the need to maintain and verify controls rather than treating deployment as a one-time task.
- Keep diagrams current. Update network and dependency maps when systems, routes, or workloads change.
- Review changes and exceptions. Confirm each rule has a purpose and an owner; remove temporary access when it is no longer needed.
- Secure the management plane. Restrict who can change network and security controls, and monitor those changes.
- Test intended and unintended paths. Check that required workflows still function and that prohibited paths are actually blocked.
- Include facility operations. Coordinate security changes with the people responsible for power, cooling, environmental monitoring, and safety systems.
- Connect alerts to response. Ensure responders know which logs to consult and how to investigate activity crossing a trust boundary.
Use the test results to adjust boundaries and monitoring. A control that looks strong on a diagram but has unmanaged exceptions or no usable logs will not provide reliable containment or evidence.
