AIB means add-in board in graphics-card terminology. It refers to the graphics board or card installed in a computer; the GPU is the graphics-processing chip mounted on that board. An AIB is not a GPU model or a separate graphics architecture.
What does AIB mean in GPU technology?
AIB is short for add-in board. In graphics-card usage, it means the board or card added to a computer to provide graphics processing. An SEC-filed exhibit defines an AIB as a graphics board that may be added during computer manufacture, distribution, or later by an end user (SEC-filed exhibit).

The phrase describes a component’s role in the computer, not a particular chip, brand, or performance class. “AIB graphics card” is therefore another way to refer to an add-in graphics board.
How is an AIB different from a GPU?
| Term | What it refers to | How the terms relate |
|---|---|---|
| AIB | The graphics board or card installed in a computer | The assembly that carries the graphics hardware |
| GPU | The graphics-processing chip | The chip mounted on the board |
The distinction is between the board and its processor: a GPU is one component of a graphics card, while AIB refers to the card or board itself. Jon Peddie Research’s terminology page makes the same distinction, defining AIB as the card and GPU as the chip on it (Jon Peddie Research terminology).

When is the add-in board installed?
The board can be added at different points in a computer’s path to use: by an original equipment manufacturer during production, by a reseller during distribution, or by an end user. “Add-in” describes its role as a component added to the computer; it does not mean the board must be installed only after purchase.
What is an AIB partner?
An AIB partner, also called a board partner, is a company that develops graphics-card products using a GPU supplier’s chip. AMD describes the companies on its partner page as using Radeon GPUs to develop graphics-card products. Examples listed there include ASUS, ASRock, GIGABYTE, MSI, PowerColor, Sapphire, and XFX (AMD Global & System Builder Partners).

A partner listing identifies companies in this product chain; it does not establish that every partner designs every component of every card. Nor does the shared GPU name mean that different cards are identical in board design, cooler, performance, or warranty. The AMD page also notes that listed partners are not available in every region.
What AIB does not mean
- It is not a GPU model: AIB names the board/card category, not a specific processor.
- It is not a separate GPU architecture: The GPU is the chip; AIB refers to the add-in graphics board carrying it.
- It does not make partner cards interchangeable: Cards built around the same GPU can differ, and the term alone says nothing about their specifications or suitability.
What to check when choosing a graphics card
AIB is useful terminology, but it is not enough to choose a card. The right desktop graphics card depends on the workload, budget, case clearance, power supply, and local availability. Before selecting a specific model, check its dimensions against the case, its power requirements against the power supply, its outputs against the displays, and its current price and availability in your region. Partner status or a GPU name alone cannot answer those compatibility questions.
