To use wired Beats headphones with a PS4, connect a compatible 3.5 mm cable to the headphones and the headset jack on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller. Then go to Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones and select All Audio to hear game and system audio through the headphones. The exact Beats model and cable determine whether a wired connection is possible; microphone support may also vary.
Check that your Beats can connect by cable
Beats models and their cables differ, so first confirm that your specific headphones support a wired 3.5 mm connection and use a cable compatible with that model. Apple lists a 3.5 mm analog audio cable for Beats Solo 4 and Beats Studio Pro in its Beats model guide. That does not establish compatibility for every Beats generation.

If you have Beats Solo 4, Apple says playback through its 3.5 mm audio cable does not require battery power. This detail is specific to Solo 4 and should not be assumed for every model; see Apple’s Solo 4 instructions.
Connect Beats and route PS4 audio
- Connect the model-compatible 3.5 mm cable to your Beats headphones.
- Plug the other end into the headset jack on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller.
- On the PS4, open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones.
- Select All Audio to hear game and other system audio through the headphones. Choose Chat Audio if you want the headphones to receive chat only. PlayStation says Chat Audio is the default setting on its PS4 audio-output support page.
Check whether the Beats microphone works
Headphone audio and microphone input are separate things to verify. With the headphones connected, open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Adjust Microphone Level and speak into the mic. Check whether the input meter responds. PlayStation’s voice-chat troubleshooting guidance recommends trying a different headset or controller if the meter does not respond.

Do not assume that a working 3.5 mm audio connection means the microphone will work too. PlayStation’s archived FAQ, published October 30, 2013, says some third-party headsets may support basic audio and chat but that Sony could not guarantee it for all such headsets. The statement is historical general guidance, not confirmation of microphone support for a particular Beats model or cable. See the archived PlayStation 4 FAQ.
Troubleshoot connection and audio problems
No sound, or sound is faint
Check that the plug is pushed fully into the controller’s headset jack. PlayStation lists an incompletely inserted plug as a cause of no or faint sound in its DUALSHOCK 4 support guidance.

Output to Headphones is grayed out
PlayStation says a grayed-out setting means the controller has not detected headphones. Reseat the plug. If the setting remains unavailable, try another headset or controller, if you have one, to help identify which part may be causing the problem.

Return to Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones and choose All Audio. Chat Audio routes chat only, so it will not send game audio to the headphones.

The microphone meter does not respond
Recheck Adjust Microphone Level while speaking. If the meter stays still, try another headset or controller as PlayStation advises. A different cable may be needed if your Beats model uses a removable cable, but verify that the cable is compatible with your exact model and supports the microphone function you need.
