Instnt Access was presented in a 2023 Hyperledger webinar as a way for people to reuse an identity credential across participating services instead of repeating some onboarding steps. That portability is conditional: a receiving institution must accept the credential under compatible governance and assurance rules, and the sources do not establish that it replaces the institution’s own KYC or AML obligations.
What the Hyperledger In-depth webinar covered
The webinar, published April 5, 2023, featured Justin Kamerman, Instnt’s chief product officer, and Soubhratra Das, its vice president of engineering. Its subject was Instnt Access, a vendor-designed approach combining identity verification with credentials intended for reuse. The event description framed repeated identity checks as a source of friction for financial institutions operating AML/CTF programs; it did not quantify that friction.

The event listing says Access builds on Instnt’s identity verification, KYC, and fraud-prevention platform and refers to the W3C Verifiable Credentials framework, Hyperledger Indy, Aries Mobile Agent, Aries Framework JavaScript (AFJ), Aries Cloud Agent Python (ACA-Py), and Ursa. The listing repeats its reference to the W3C framework, so it should be read as a product description, not an independent audit of the architecture. See the webinar description.
How portable KYC is meant to work
In this context, portable KYC means that a person who has completed verification in one relationship may present a credential to another participating service. If the recipient accepts it, some data entry or verification steps could be avoided. The credential is not automatically portable to every bank: the event description makes reuse dependent on services subscribing to the same governance framework and using compatible definitions of assurance.

- Identity checks: Instnt says its platform performs identity and risk checks on a user.
- Credential issuance: For users it accepts, Instnt says it issues a verifiable credential containing identity information, an assurance level, and expiry or revocation information, alongside a user-specific key pair.
- Wallet storage: Instnt’s November 2022 announcement describes the credential as stored in an embedded, white-label identity wallet on the user’s device, protected by PIN and biometric verification.
- Presentation to another service: The user may present the credential to a participating service, which must determine whether its issuer, evidence, assurance level, and governance are suitable for the specific use.
These implementation details come from Instnt’s launch announcement; they are vendor descriptions, not independently tested findings. Instnt also said a decentralized identity document was published to IBM’s permissioned Hyperledger blockchain. That description does not establish that all personal identity data is public, nor does a ledger record alone prove privacy or security outcomes.
Does a verifiable credential replace a bank’s KYC checks?
No such conclusion is established by the cited materials. A credential can carry information about an earlier verification and make it available for another service to assess. But a financial institution still needs to decide whether the issuer, evidence, assurance level, freshness, revocation process, and disclosures meet its requirements for the customer, product, and jurisdiction. Neither a verifiable credential nor a blockchain record should be treated as automatically satisfying every institution’s KYC or AML duties.

The sources do not establish regulator endorsement or legal sufficiency for Instnt Access. A financial institution considering a deployment would need its compliance and legal teams to assess the relevant rules and its own controls rather than infer approval from the use of Hyperledger or W3C standards.
Questions to resolve before accepting portable credentials
- Issuer and evidence: Who issued and attested to the credential, and what evidence and checks support its assurance level?
- Governance: Do the issuing and receiving services share a governance framework and compatible assurance definitions?
- Revocation and correction: How can a credential be revoked, updated, or corrected, and how quickly will a recipient learn of a change?
- Disclosure and consent: What information is disclosed to the recipient, for what purpose, and how is the user’s consent recorded?
- Redress: What can a user do if verification is incorrect, a credential is rejected, or access to the wallet is lost?
- Institutional fit: Can the recipient audit the decision and demonstrate that its controls meet the requirements for the particular account and jurisdiction?
- Technical and vendor dependency: What platforms and integrations are supported, how much implementation work is needed, and can credentials or records be migrated if a vendor or component changes?
- Evidence of outcomes: Are there independent security, fraud, or operational results for the proposed deployment? The cited sources do not provide measured results for ranking vendors on these points.
Related Instnt product material and historical limits
Instnt announced in October 2023 that Multipass was another portable identity offering built around Verifiable Credentials and Decentralized ID for repeat access and authentication. Instnt announced in December 2022 that it had joined the Hyperledger Foundation and said it had been contributing to self-sovereign identity projects. Membership and contribution claims provide context, not independent confirmation of product performance. Read the membership announcement.
Product names, availability, supported components, and features may have changed since the 2022–2023 announcements. Instnt’s support documentation says its document-verification feature accepts government-issued IDs such as passports and driver’s licenses and is available through mobile-responsive web, iOS, and Android; desktop devices are unsupported for that feature because of camera and orientation requirements.
