AI fatigue is best understood as a measurable, multidimensional experience—not proof that the underlying technology is harmless. A 2026 peer-reviewed study developed a 15-item scale covering cognitive, emotional, physical and behavioural fatigue. That makes measurement useful for finding where strain appears, but it does not show that measurement is the only problem or that a poorly designed AI system, excessive workload or weak organizational practices are irrelevant.

For leaders, the practical lesson is to measure user experience alongside adoption and productivity. For individuals, fatigue can involve the effort of prompting, checking whether outputs are trustworthy, integrating suggestions and repeatedly switching between their own ideas and an AI system’s responses.

What “AI fatigue” means

AI fatigue is not simply the number of hours someone spends with a chatbot or other AI tool. It describes tiredness associated with human–AI interaction. The strongest current evidence treats it as a higher-order construct with four related dimensions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Dimension What it captures Examples of an interaction demand
Cognitive Mental effort, information overload and difficulty sustaining attention while working with AI. Writing, refining and evaluating prompts; comparing several generated answers; deciding which details matter.
Emotional Negative feelings that arise during or after AI use. Frustration with inconsistent responses, anxiety about making an error, irritation at having to correct the system repeatedly.
Physical Bodily tiredness linked to the interaction context. Eye strain, tension or exhaustion after prolonged screen-based checking and editing. A scale score is not a medical diagnosis.
Behavioural Changes in what a person does because AI use feels effortful. Delaying a task, avoiding a tool, shortening sessions or intending to reduce AI use.

This distinction matters because two people can spend the same amount of time using AI and have very different experiences. One may receive a useful first draft with little checking; another may spend longer verifying claims, rewriting prompts and reconciling conflicting suggestions. A usage log records exposure, not the effort required to make the output usable.

Why the “measurement problem” diagnosis is partly right

Organizations commonly watch adoption rates, licence utilization, task-completion time or output volume. Those measures can rise while users become mentally overloaded. They can also fall for very different reasons: a tool may be unreliable, a workflow may be poorly integrated, or employees may simply be taking a deliberate break. Without asking about the user’s experience, those possibilities look identical in a dashboard.

What adoption metrics leave out

  • Verification work: A generated answer can reduce drafting effort while adding time spent checking accuracy, provenance and completeness.
  • Prompting effort: Users may need to learn a system’s preferred wording, rephrase requests and try several variants before obtaining a useful result.
  • Integration effort: A person still has to fit an AI suggestion into a document, decision, codebase or conversation while preserving their own intent.
  • Attention costs: Switching between personal ideas and generated alternatives can interrupt flow even when the final output is acceptable.
  • Withdrawal: Lower usage can indicate healthy selectivity, technical failure or fatigue-driven avoidance. A count alone cannot distinguish them.

In this sense, measurement is a prerequisite for diagnosis. It can show whether strain is primarily mental, emotional, physical or behavioural and whether it differs by task. It cannot, by itself, identify the cause. A high cognitive-fatigue score might reflect an opaque interface, an unrealistic deadline, a task that genuinely requires careful judgment, or all three.

What the 2026 validation study found

Lau, Kasturiratna, Goh, Tong and Hartanto reported the AI Fatigue Scale in a 2026 article in Computers in Human Behavior Reports (volume 23, DOI 10.1016/j.chbr.2026.101186). Across four studies involving 717 participants, they developed and content-validated 15 items and identified a four-factor, higher-order structure corresponding to cognitive, emotional, physical and behavioural fatigue.

Evidence reported by the authors Result How to interpret it
Internal consistency α = .92 The items showed strong consistency in the study samples. This does not guarantee the same value in every population or translation.
Two-week test–retest reliability ICC(2,1) = .65 Scores showed moderate stability over two weeks. Fatigue can still change with workload, health, task and context.
Measurement invariance Reported across sex The authors found evidence that the scale operated comparably across the sex groups examined. That is not proof of equivalence across every culture, age group or role.
Convergent evidence Relations with general, clinical and digital fatigue, plus AI-specific technostress The scale behaved as expected alongside related fatigue and stress measures.
Discriminant evidence Distinguished from AI dependency, AI attachment and critical thinking in AI use The authors found that the construct was not simply a relabeling of those adjacent concepts.

These are the authors’ validation results, not independent replications. Four studies and 717 participants provide an important starting point, while leaving open questions about different occupations, countries, languages, age groups, accessibility needs and kinds of AI systems.

The authors also reported that higher fatigue was associated with lower current self-reported AI use and stronger intentions to reduce use during the next three months. The statistical relationship remained after accounting for general, clinical and digital fatigue and AI-specific technostress. It is an association, not evidence that fatigue caused people to cut back; people who already use AI less may also report more fatigue for other reasons.

Other reported associations included negative affect, more negative attitudes toward AI, higher neuroticism and lower conscientiousness and extraversion. Those findings are correlational characteristics, not diagnostic criteria. They should not be used to label a person or infer why an individual is tired.

The article’s abstract says: “These findings provide a validated tool for examining AI fatigue and its underlying conditions, and establish an initial empirical foundation for how the phenomenon develops, manifests, and is associated with users’ engagement with AI systems.” The careful wording is important: it establishes a tool and an initial foundation, not a final causal model.

How mentally tiring is using AI?

A separate Human Clarity Institute benchmark provides a practical description of the effort people notice in everyday use. In its 2025–2026 sample of 503 respondents, 43% said that judging AI or digital information for accuracy or trustworthiness drained their focus. Thirty-two percent found prompting mentally taxing, and 29% said that switching between their own ideas and AI suggestions disrupted their flow.

Those percentages belong to that publisher’s sample; they are not population prevalence estimates and are not results from the peer-reviewed AI Fatigue Scale studies. They nevertheless illustrate why answer-production effort and total effort can move in opposite directions. AI may produce text quickly while shifting work toward prompting, checking, comparing and integrating. The literal question many users are asking—how mentally tiring is using AI?—therefore has no single answer. It depends on the task, the reliability of the output, the amount of checking required and the person’s ability to maintain a coherent workflow.

Individual interaction fatigue is not organizational adoption fatigue

“AI fatigue” is also used in discussions of organizations that are struggling to sustain enthusiasm, accountability or investment in AI projects. Gartner’s August 2025 abstract describes AI fatigue and accountability gaps as overlooked barriers to AI and generative-AI adoption. That is an organizational framing. It should not be treated as validation of the individual scale.

Question Individual interaction fatigue Organizational adoption fatigue
Unit of analysis A person’s cognitive, emotional, physical and behavioural experience while using AI. A team or organization’s declining momentum, unclear ownership or resistance around AI initiatives.
Typical indicators Self-reported tiredness, difficulty concentrating, frustration, bodily strain, avoidance or plans to reduce use. Slowing rollouts, repeated pilots without learning, weak accountability, falling participation or conflicting priorities.
Evidence discussed here The 15-item scale developed and validated across four studies with 717 participants. Gartner’s abstract-level commentary; the full report is not available in the cited material.
Can one measure stand in for the other? No. A user score does not measure organizational governance. No. Adoption data does not reveal an individual’s interaction fatigue.

The two forms can influence each other. A confusing workflow may tire users and weaken adoption; a chaotic rollout may force people to switch tools and repeat training. They still require different questions and different levels of analysis.

A practical way to measure fatigue without mistaking it for a cause

The current evidence supports a measurement framework, not a universal workplace protocol. Teams can use the following sequence to avoid reducing the issue to a single utilization number.

  1. Define the unit. Decide whether you are studying individual users, a specific team or an organization-wide program. Do not combine personal fatigue scores with adoption rates as if they were the same variable.
  2. Specify the task and time window. Record whether responses refer to coding, writing, analysis, customer service or another activity, and whether the question concerns one session, a week or a longer period. Fatigue is contextual.
  3. Measure the four experience dimensions. Ask separately about mental effort, emotional reaction, bodily tiredness and behaviour such as avoidance or intended reduction. A single “How tired are you?” item cannot show where an intervention is needed.
  4. Pair self-report with process evidence. Look at revision cycles, verification steps, interruptions, support requests and task outcomes. These signals can illuminate a score, but none should be treated as a direct substitute for asking users.
  5. Segment before acting. Compare tasks, roles, experience levels and systems only when the groups are large and comparable enough to protect privacy. An average can hide a small group carrying most of the checking burden.
  6. Test a change and remeasure. Simplify a workflow, improve source visibility, reduce unnecessary tool switching or adjust deadlines, then measure the same dimensions again. A change in score is informative only when the task and measurement window are documented.
  7. Set an ethical boundary. Use results to improve work, not to penalize people for reporting strain. Fatigue scores are not fitness-for-work tests, mental-health diagnoses or productivity rankings.

If you want to use the published 15-item instrument, obtain the authors’ current terms first. The university repository records the article under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International license, but that publication license does not establish that the questionnaire itself is licensed for commercial reuse. No separate commercial instrument offering is established in the available material.

How to test whether the technology or workflow is contributing

Measurement becomes useful when it leads to a testable question. The following patterns help separate possible contributors without claiming that a symptom proves a cause.

Observed pattern Questions to investigate Potential next test
High cognitive fatigue with frequent re-prompting Are instructions ambiguous? Does the system expose enough context and source information? Are users being asked to solve an inherently complex task? Provide task-specific guidance, improve context handling or narrow the task, then compare prompting effort and fatigue.
High emotional fatigue after contradictory outputs Are errors predictable? Is there a clear escalation path? Are users held responsible for checking claims without adequate time? Make uncertainty visible, define review ownership and allow realistic verification time.
Physical fatigue concentrated in long sessions Is the work forcing continuous screen attention or repeated window switching? Are breaks and alternative input methods available? Redesign the session structure and test whether shorter, planned intervals change physical-fatigue reports.
Behavioural avoidance after a rollout Is the tool unreliable, difficult to access or poorly matched to the task? Did training and support arrive at the same time as new expectations? Compare a supported workflow with the existing one and ask users why they stopped or reduced use.

These tests can reveal a technology problem, a process problem, a workload problem or a combination. A measurement result narrows the search; it does not select the culprit automatically.

What the evidence still cannot tell us

  • Causality: The reported links between fatigue and lower AI use, intentions to reduce use, affect, attitudes and personality do not show which variable came first.
  • Universal validity: Reliability and invariance results from the reported samples do not establish identical performance in every language, culture, occupation, disability context or AI modality.
  • Organizational diagnosis: The individual scale does not measure governance, accountability, procurement decisions or change-management capacity.
  • Clinical meaning: Physical or emotional fatigue scores should not be interpreted as medical conditions or used instead of appropriate professional assessment.
  • Commercial permission: The article’s open publication license is not evidence that the questionnaire may be copied into a paid product or workplace system without additional permission.

What leaders and users should do now

For leaders

  • Keep adoption and productivity dashboards, but add confidential questions covering cognitive, emotional, physical and behavioural strain.
  • Ask about the specific task and checking burden instead of treating all AI use as equivalent.
  • Investigate high-fatigue groups before setting higher usage targets; forced adoption can increase the burden the dashboard fails to show.
  • Assign responsibility for verification and provide time, documentation and escalation routes to perform it.
  • Report uncertainty honestly: a score can identify where to look, not prove that a system caused the problem.

For individual users

  • Notice which part of the interaction is tiring: formulating the request, judging the answer, editing it, or switching attention.
  • Keep a short task log for a week, noting retries, verification time and interruptions. This is a personal diagnostic aid, not a validated score.
  • Use AI selectively for tasks where the checking burden is lower than the work it replaces.
  • Raise workflow or interface problems with concrete examples rather than describing all fatigue as a personal failure.

Bottom line

AI fatigue is measurable, and measuring it is necessary if organizations want to know whether AI is helping or merely moving effort from production to prompting, checking and integration. The 2026 scale provides promising initial evidence for four dimensions of individual fatigue, with strong internal consistency and moderate two-week stability. It does not prove that technology is innocent, establish a universal prevalence rate or show that fatigue causes people to reduce AI use. The most defensible conclusion is narrower and more useful: measure the human experience first, then test which features of the system, task and organization are creating or relieving the strain.
