AI is useful in scientific research as an assistant, not an autonomous source of truth. It can search and organize literature, suggest hypotheses, analyze data and images, build models, propose molecules or materials, and help draft research documents. None of those capabilities verifies a claim, replaces experimental validation, or transfers responsibility from the researcher.
The safe standard is simple: use AI for bounded tasks you understand, verify every consequential output against evidence, label synthetic material, protect confidential data, and document use according to the rules of your institution, funder, journal, and discipline.

What AI can actually do in scientific research
Scientific AI use is task-specific. A system that is helpful for finding papers may be unsuitable for interpreting microscopy images, handling controlled-access data, or preparing a grant application. The following categories are documented uses, not guarantees that a particular tool performs them accurately.
Literature searching and review
AI can help expand search terms, cluster papers by topic, extract study characteristics, compare methods, and produce an initial map of a field. It can also identify apparent gaps or disagreements that deserve closer reading. The researcher still needs to retrieve the original papers, check whether the cited work actually supports each statement, and account for omitted or inaccessible literature. A fluent synthesis is an organizing aid, not a systematic review by itself.

Hypothesis generation and experimental planning
Generative systems can propose multiple hypotheses, vary assumptions, suggest controls, and outline possible experiments. NIH’s 2026 Guidelines for the Conduct of Research describe “AI co-scientists” as systems that may synthesize literature, generate hypotheses and plans, run experiments or models, suggest interpretations and alternatives, and draft text. Those are capability categories. They do not show that a system independently produces reliable science.
Data and image analysis
AI can classify images, detect patterns, assist with segmentation, flag anomalies, and help analyze large or complex datasets. It may also generate code for statistical or computational workflows. Before accepting a result, researchers must inspect the data-processing steps, test performance on appropriate validation data, examine false positives and false negatives, and confirm that the model’s assumptions fit the study design.
Modeling and simulation
Machine-learning systems can fit predictive models, emulate expensive simulations, explore parameter spaces, and identify candidate relationships. Their outputs are useful for prioritizing experiments or testing scenarios. They do not establish causation merely because a prediction is accurate on one dataset, and performance can change when the population, instrument, laboratory conditions, or time period changes.
Molecule and material design
AI can propose molecular structures, materials, or combinations with target properties and rank candidates for laboratory testing. The practical value is often in narrowing a search space. Chemical stability, toxicity, manufacturability, measurement error, and unexpected interactions still require domain expertise and empirical testing.

Writing, editing, and research administration
Researchers use AI to improve grammar, restructure explanations, draft sections of papers or grant proposals, prepare consent-form language, and assist with IRB applications. It can also support logistical tasks such as organizing notes or producing checklists. The scientist remains responsible for the factual content, ethical claims, originality, and compliance of the final document.
Reviewing papers and other research outputs
AI can help a reviewer locate methodological inconsistencies, summarize sections, or generate questions for closer inspection. Reviewers must protect confidential manuscripts and reviews and must make their own judgments. A generated critique is not a substitute for reading the submission.
Can AI make scientific discoveries?
AI can contribute to discovery by expanding the number of hypotheses considered, testing computational assumptions, finding patterns, and proposing experiments that a team might not have considered. A 2024 National Academies workshop chapter describes useful generative-AI work as developing multiple hypotheses, testing and evolving assumptions, seeking alternatives, and identifying potential gaps.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDiscovery, however, includes more than producing an interesting idea. A scientific claim requires a defensible method, observations or measurements, analysis that others can inspect, and validation appropriate to the field. Independent empirical validation is a separate step. Treat an AI suggestion as a candidate explanation or experiment until evidence supports it.

There is no cross-disciplinary accuracy percentage or universal error rate that can tell you whether an AI system is “reliable” for science in general. Reliability depends on the task, data, model, controls, and the expertise of the person evaluating the result.
What AI cannot safely be assumed to do
Verify facts or citations
Plausible wording is not proof. Systems can invent references, misstate a paper’s findings, merge details from different sources, or provide a real citation that does not support the sentence attached to it. NIH warns that AI-assisted grant preparation can result in plagiarism, fabricated citations, or other research misconduct.
Eliminate bias or random error
Training data and prompts can encode selection bias, measurement artifacts, and stereotypes. Outputs can also vary between runs or contain random errors that are difficult to notice. The authors of a 2025 ethics review state: “Researchers are responsible for identifying, describing, reducing, and controlling AI-related biases and random errors.” That responsibility includes considering effects on communities represented in the data and consulting affected stakeholders where appropriate.

Turn synthetic data into observations
Synthetic data can be useful for validating a model, stress-testing an analysis, or exploring a hypothesis. It is not an observation collected from the world. Clearly mark which records, images, or measurements are synthetic; describe how they were generated; explain why they were used; and preserve their provenance. Mixing generated and observed data without clear labels can make a result impossible to interpret or reproduce.

Serve as an accountable author or inventor
An AI system cannot take responsibility for accuracy, conflicts of interest, ethical approval, or research misconduct. The 2025 ethics review says AI systems should not be named as authors, inventors, or copyright holders. Disclose the assistance and describe the system’s contribution instead, following the policy of the relevant journal, institution, or funder.
Replace subject-matter expertise
Researchers should use a system only where they have enough expertise to judge its output. If you cannot independently recognize a wrong equation, inappropriate control, misleading image interpretation, or unsupported citation, you cannot safely delegate that decision to a model.
A responsible AI workflow for researchers
- Define the task and acceptable role. Decide whether AI is being used for search, brainstorming, coding assistance, analysis, editing, or another bounded purpose. Specify what the system must not decide, such as a final diagnosis, authorship, eligibility determination, or claim of discovery.
- Check expertise and method fit. Confirm that you understand the scientific method, data-generating process, and limitations of the proposed approach. Ask whether the tool is appropriate for the discipline and whether its output can be independently evaluated.
- Protect data before prompting. Review confidentiality, privacy, intellectual-property, and data-use terms. Remove identifying information where permitted, use approved environments, and obtain institutional approval before entering unpublished work, participant information, proprietary material, or controlled-access data.
- Preserve the evidence trail. Save the prompt or task description, model or software version when available, relevant settings, input data, generated output, edits, and the sources used for verification. For code, retain the exact script and environment needed to reproduce the analysis.
- Verify claims and references. Open the original source, check the exact passage or result, and confirm that the citation supports the wording. Recalculate important values, rerun code, inspect raw data, and seek an independent review for high-consequence conclusions.
- Test for bias, error, and robustness. Examine performance across relevant subgroups and conditions. Look for false positives, false negatives, missing classes, data leakage, unstable outputs, and sensitivity to prompt or parameter changes. Consider who could be harmed by an error.
- Label generated material. Identify synthetic data, generated images, simulated results, and substantial AI-assisted text. Explain the generation method and the material’s role in the work so readers can distinguish it from observations and human analysis.
- Disclose and document use. Follow the applicable journal, funder, institutional, and project rules. Describe what AI did, what humans checked, and any material limitations in language readers can understand.
- Make the final judgment yourself. The individual scientist remains responsible for accuracy, integrity, originality, and reproducibility. Do not submit an output merely because it sounds authoritative.

Confidentiality, privacy, and controlled data
Uploading information to a public or unapproved system can create a disclosure even when the prompt seems harmless. Check where inputs are stored, whether they are used for training, who can access them, how long they are retained, and whether your agreement permits the transfer.

The same notice encourages proposers to indicate whether and how generative AI was used in proposal development, while keeping proposers and awardees responsible for accuracy and authenticity.

NIH’s March 28, 2025 notice separately reminds researchers that the Genomic Data Sharing Policy and Data Use Certification prohibit distributing controlled-access genomic information, associated data, or derivatives to unauthorized people or organizations without appropriate written approvals. Do not place protected genomic data in an AI tool unless the data-use terms and institutional permissions explicitly allow it.
Current U.S. federal policy examples
Federal requirements are role-specific and can change. The examples below illustrate how to check the rule that applies to your activity; they should not be treated as universal standards for every country, institution, discipline, or journal.
| Policy example | Date and scope | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| NSF merit review notice | December 14, 2023; NSF reviewers and proposers | Reviewers may not put proposal or review material into non-approved generative-AI tools. Proposers are encouraged to disclose use and remain responsible for accuracy and authenticity. |
| NIH Notice NOT-OD-25-132 | Released July 17, 2025; applications with receipt dates beginning September 25, 2025 | Applications, or sections, substantially developed by AI will not be considered original ideas of the applicants. NIH also warns about plagiarism, fabricated citations, and misconduct. |
| NIH Guidelines for the Conduct of Research, ninth edition | Published May 2026 | Encourages responsible AI use while emphasizing integrity, quality, reproducibility, privacy, intellectual property, transparency, cybersecurity guidance, changing journal policies, and individual responsibility for publication accuracy and integrity. |
| NIH controlled-access genomic-data notice | March 28, 2025 | Controlled-access genomic data and derivatives may not be distributed to unauthorized parties without appropriate written approvals. |
NIH’s 2025 application notice reported evidence that principal investigators used AI tools to submit more than 40 distinct applications in a single submission round. That is an agency observation in the context of the notice, not an estimate of how common AI use is among researchers.
How to verify AI-generated research or citations
- Copy the claim into a verification list rather than accepting a long generated paragraph as one unit.
- Locate the cited article, dataset, standard, or policy in its authoritative source.
- Check title, authors, date, version, and identifiers; then read the relevant methods and results, not only the abstract.
- Ask whether the source supports the precise strength of the claim. “Associated with” does not establish causation, and a model prediction does not establish an observation.
- Reproduce calculations, rerun analysis code, inspect units and denominators, and compare results with a trusted baseline.
- Record corrections and rejected outputs so collaborators can see what was changed and why.
What responsible disclosure looks like
A useful disclosure states the system or class of system, the task it performed, the material portions that were generated or transformed, and the checks a human performed. It should also identify limitations that affect interpretation. For synthetic data or images, disclose the generation method and separate them from observed material in files, figures, captions, and analyses.
Requirements differ. A journal may ask for an AI-use statement; a funder may restrict how a proposal is developed; an institution may require an approved service; and a data-use agreement may prohibit external processing altogether. Check the rule in force for the specific submission and role rather than relying on a generic disclosure template.
Bottom line for research teams
Use AI to widen search, generate alternatives, automate routine transformations, and make complex workflows easier to inspect. Do not use it as an unverified authority. The decisive safeguards are human expertise, source-level checking, reproducible records, clear labels for synthetic material, secure handling of confidential data, and compliance with the policy governing the work. When those controls are absent, a polished output can increase risk rather than scientific value.
