What an AI browser assistant can see depends on the browser, the specific feature, and the permissions you have granted. Some features answer questions about one page; some assistants can use multiple open tabs, signed-in sites, browsing history, or connected apps. Agent features may also click, navigate, or submit information. Reading access and action access are separate, so check both before handing over a task.
What “access to your open tabs” actually means
An open tab is not, by itself, proof that an assistant has read it or sent its contents to a provider. A page-summary feature, a sidebar question, a browser-memory feature, and an agent asked to complete a task can have different access. Depending on the product and feature, the assistant may use the current page, multiple tabs, browsing history, signed-in sessions, or connected-app information.

There are two distinct questions to ask: what can the assistant read? and what can it do with that context? An assistant may be able to summarize a page without submitting a form, while an agent may navigate and interact with websites. Data may also be processed by the provider or shared with a website to complete a task. Product documentation describes these flows differently; the comparison below is not a standardized technical audit.
How the documented products differ
| Product and status | Context described by the provider | Actions described by the provider | Data handling and controls described by the provider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini in Chrome auto-browse | Google says it works across open tabs and can access the same sites as the user, including signed-in sites. Depending on the request, it may use connected-app information. | It can complete actions on a user’s behalf. Google documents confirmation requests for certain actions, including sending communications, changing data, submitting forms, scheduling events, and accessing highly sensitive financial or health sites. Password-manager-assisted sign-in requires permission; Google says Password Manager does not share passwords with Gemini. | Google says information may be shared with a website to complete a task. Documented controls include switching browsing permission off, taking over, or stopping a task. Google labels auto-browse experimental and warns that safeguards cannot prevent every risk. |
| Perplexity Comet | Perplexity says Comet Assistant can answer questions about currently open tabs. Its FAQ says Comet stores browsing data such as URLs, search queries, cookies, open tabs, and site permissions locally for browsing and AI features. | Perplexity says the assistant can search the web and interact with websites on the user’s behalf. | Perplexity says personal data is not sent to it during ordinary use until a personal search is requested; for such a search, the current tab and relevant browsing history may be used. It says page context, including text and email, may be processed on its servers to fulfill a query, credentials are stored locally in a device’s secure vault, and third-party integration access is opt-in. These are Perplexity’s product statements, not claims about other browsers. |
| ChatGPT Atlas (historical transition example) | OpenAI documented a page-visibility setting for allowing or disabling page reading for Atlas features. Its help documentation also said disabling a site prevents new browser memories from being created for that site. | OpenAI’s 2025 announcement described an agent mode that could open tabs and click through tasks. Those are historical feature descriptions, not a statement that Atlas remains available. | OpenAI said Atlas was scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026. At the October 4, 2026 research timestamp, it should be treated as discontinued rather than a supported browser option. OpenAI described browser memories as opt-in and documented deletion controls. It also said Incognito activity was not linked to the ChatGPT account or saved in browser history, while cautioning that Incognito did not make users invisible to ChatGPT or the internet. |
The details above come from each provider’s own documentation and may change by feature, settings, region, or availability. Do not assume that one product’s data flow or safeguards apply to another.

Can an AI browser act on a signed-in account?
Some agent features can use the sites available in the user’s browser session. Google says Gemini auto-browse can access the same sites as the user, including signed-in sites. That makes a task involving email, financial services, health information, or other private accounts more consequential than asking for a public-page summary.
Before starting a task, check whether it could send a message, submit a form, change account data, schedule an event, or make a purchase. Read confirmation prompts rather than approving them automatically, and watch for a request to take over. An agent can misunderstand a site or instruction; Google specifically warns that a task can go wrong or result in an unintended purchase. These cautions are not evidence that every agent will make such a mistake, but they are reasons to supervise consequential actions.

Why webpage instructions can create risk
AI agents read page content that may include instructions crafted to manipulate them. This is often called prompt injection. The content might be in a page, an email, or a document, and it may try to persuade an agent to reveal private information or take an action unrelated to the user’s request. Google advises monitoring sensitive tasks. OpenAI has also described a link-based risk: a manipulated request could make an agent load a URL containing private data, which could then appear in the destination server’s logs.

A 2026 ICLR workshop paper’s indexed abstract describes an evaluation of seven agentic browsers. It reports a demonstrated cross-origin data-theft attack on ChatGPT Atlas Agent Mode and says attack preconditions may exist in several other products if prompt injection succeeds. That abstract-level finding is not a fresh security assessment of current browser software, and it does not establish how often attacks occur.

How to limit what an assistant can see or do
- Check the feature before using it. Look for the product’s page-visibility or browsing-permission setting and determine whether the feature uses a single page, multiple tabs, history, or connected apps.
- Restrict access where available. Disable page reading for sites where the product offers that control, and switch off agent browsing when you do not need it. Atlas documentation, for example, described site-level page visibility controls; its availability is historical, not a current Atlas recommendation.
- Be selective with sensitive tasks. Avoid delegating work in highly sensitive accounts unless the product, permissions, and task justify it. Do not assume that an Incognito window makes activity invisible to the assistant or to websites.
- Review before consequential actions. Read confirmation prompts for messages, forms, account changes, appointments, or purchases. If the assistant’s behavior diverges from your request, stop the task or take over where that control is available.
- Review and delete stored context when supported. Check whether the browser has memory or browsing-data controls, and use its deletion options if you no longer want that stored information retained.
These steps reduce exposure and the chance of an unwanted action; they do not guarantee protection. The clearest practical rule is to treat an agent as a supervised browser user: grant only the access needed for the task, and do not leave sensitive actions unattended.
