Short answer: the Pixel 11 Pro uses a hybrid design. Gemini Nano, managed by Android AICore, handles supported tasks locally, including several text, speech and image functions. Cloud Gemini models take over when a request needs more context, capability or compute. Gemini Intelligence can chain actions across supported apps, but Google has not published a complete action-by-action map showing which parts of every consumer feature run locally or remotely.

That means “offline AI” and “cloud AI” are not mutually exclusive modes. A single workflow may begin with local understanding, call a cloud model for a larger request, and then use an app integration to complete an action. The exact route depends on the feature, model availability, permissions, connectivity, language and regional rollout.

How the Pixel 11 Pro’s hybrid AI architecture works

On the Pixel 11 Pro, Gemini Nano runs through Android AICore for supported on-device generative-AI features. AICore stores and updates the local model, applies safety filters and uses the phone’s hardware acceleration. The result is inference that can happen without sending the prompt, recording or image to a remote server.

When Nano cannot satisfy a request, Android can route it to a larger Gemini model in Google’s cloud. The trigger may be a token limit, a capability that Nano does not support, insufficient local hardware headroom or simple unavailability of the local model. Cloud processing provides larger context windows and broader model abilities, but requires a network connection and invokes Google’s cloud-side data controls.

Google’s Android hybrid-generation API exposes two preferences for developers: PREFER_ON_DEVICE, which uses Nano first and permits a cloud fallback, and PREFER_IN_CLOUD, which prefers cloud inference and falls back locally when the phone is offline. That API is experimental, and its local models are currently specialized for single-turn text generation from text or one bitmap image. Those developer settings should not be interpreted as a public routing guarantee for every Gemini Intelligence action on the Pixel 11 Pro.

Google’s consumer documentation describes Gemini Intelligence as a combination of model inference, app connections, device signals and action safeguards. It does not publish a complete per-action routing table. Therefore, a statement such as “this exact shopping step is always on-device” or “every proactive suggestion goes to the cloud” would be stronger than the available documentation supports.

Tasks the Pixel 11 Pro can perform on-device

Text generation, rewriting and summaries through Android APIs

Google’s ML Kit GenAI APIs list the Pixel 11 Pro as a supported device for feature-specific Gemini Nano functions and for the Gemini Nano v4 Prompt API. Depending on the API and the app using it, Nano can summarize text, proofread writing, rewrite passages, describe an image, recognize speech and respond to a custom prompt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These APIs are intended for focused jobs rather than an unrestricted replacement for a large cloud model. A short note can be condensed, a draft can be corrected, or a single image can be described without a round trip to a server. Input and output remain on the phone when the selected feature is operating locally, which can be important for private notes, workplace text or sensitive photos.

Offline summaries in Recorder

Android’s AI documentation says Pixel Recorder can use Gemini Nano to summarize voice recordings offline. This is useful when you are recording in a location with no signal or when you do not want an audio file uploaded for a summary. The available language, recording length and summary behavior can depend on the installed Recorder and model versions, so a missing summary option does not necessarily mean the hardware is unsupported.

Local summarization still has practical limits. A very long recording may exceed the model’s context or processing budget, and the summary quality can vary with background noise, multiple speakers and the recording language. If Recorder offers no local result, the limitation may be the feature’s current support rather than a fault in the Pixel 11 Pro.

Offline image descriptions through TalkBack

TalkBack can generate image descriptions with Gemini Nano offline or over an unstable connection, according to Android’s documentation. This can provide accessibility information when a web connection is unavailable. Because the model is running locally, a photo does not have to leave the device for the description step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Descriptions are generated from the pixels that TalkBack can access, so they are not a substitute for a human explanation of ambiguous content. Low light, small text, unusual layouts or images containing sensitive context can lead to incomplete or incorrect descriptions. Treat the result as assistance, not verification.

Speech and other focused GenAI functions

Speech-recognition support in ML Kit’s GenAI APIs allows compatible applications to process supported audio locally. Proofreading, rewriting and image-description APIs follow the same pattern: they are bounded operations with model and token limits, not an unlimited local chatbot. Developers choose the API, and the app determines whether the request is eligible for on-device execution.

The local model’s boundaries explain why two apps with similar-looking “summarize” buttons can behave differently. One may use a supported Nano API and work in airplane mode; another may rely on a cloud endpoint and stop when connectivity is lost.

When Gemini uses cloud or hybrid processing

Requests that exceed Nano’s limits

Google describes Gemini Flash and Gemini Pro in the cloud as fallbacks when Gemini Nano is unavailable or unsupported. A long document, a multi-file question, a complex reasoning request or a task requiring a capability not exposed by Nano can therefore leave the phone. Cloud models also have more server-side compute and can accept broader context than the local model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloud dependence is visible first as a connectivity requirement. If the Pixel 11 Pro is offline, a cloud-only operation may fail, queue or present a reduced local alternative. A hybrid feature can still complete a smaller part of the job locally, then wait for a connection before continuing.

Why routing is not always visible

Gemini Intelligence is presented as a single assistant experience even though its components may be split between the phone and Google’s infrastructure. The public Android and Gemini documentation identifies the hybrid architecture but does not label every consumer action with a local or cloud badge. The absence of an explicit label is not proof that an action is cloud-only or device-only.

For privacy decisions, assume that a request may use cloud processing unless the feature explicitly states that it is operating on-device or you have tested a documented offline mode. That is a practical precaution, not a claim that every request is uploaded.

What “agentic” means on the Pixel 11 Pro

An ordinary assistant answers a question in one turn. An agentic assistant can interpret a goal, plan several steps, call functions exposed by apps, report progress and ask for confirmation before a consequential action. Gemini Intelligence is designed for this broader workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multi-step work across supported apps

Google gives examples such as ordering groceries, making reservations and shopping online. In a supported flow, Gemini can translate your request into a sequence: identify the relevant service, search for options, fill details, review the result and pause at a confirmation point. Whether it can actually finish depends on the apps and services available in your region and on whether those apps expose the required functions.

The language model is only one part of this process. Android AppFunctions lets apps publish self-describing functions that agents can call. For apps without a dedicated integration, Android is developing UI automation. A Pixel 11 Pro cannot reliably automate an arbitrary app merely because Gemini can see its screen; the app must be supported by an integration or by the UI-automation capabilities available in that rollout.

Preview availability is not the same as Pixel 11 Pro support

An Android Developers preview described curated food-delivery, grocery and rideshare integrations in the United States and South Korea on Galaxy S26 and selected Pixel 10 devices. That preview is not confirmation that the same automation set is available on the Pixel 11 Pro. Rollout notices, app eligibility, language and country rules must be checked for the specific phone and account.

Proactive Assistance

Proactive Assistance can read permitted screen and device signals to surface useful information, such as a reservation code or travel detail. During setup, users can choose on-device sources such as messages and screenshots. The assistant is not granted blanket access by default; the available signal types and controls depend on the permissions you approve.

Personal Intelligence

Personal Intelligence can use connected Gmail, Google Photos and Google Keep context to tailor an answer. You select which apps to connect during setup. Connecting an app expands the context Gemini can use, so it should be treated as a deliberate data-sharing decision rather than a harmless convenience toggle.

Privacy, permissions and control during agentic actions

The assistant should not start an action without your instruction

Google security executive Dave Kleidermacher wrote that “Gemini assistant starts to automate a task only when you tell it to.” The statement describes an explicit-start model: a suggestion or preview is not the same as an autonomous transaction.

Gemini can access only apps that you allow, and Google says it is designed to require confirmation before purchases. You should still read the final amount, delivery address, appointment time and account used before approving anything. Confirmation protects against an incorrect interpretation; it does not guarantee that every field is right.

Progress visibility

When Gemini automates an app, you can select “View progress.” A persistent notification chip remains visible if you leave the app, so an in-progress operation is not meant to disappear silently in the background. If you do not recognize an active task, open the progress view and stop or cancel it before continuing.

Reviewing activity

Android Privacy Dashboard provides an activity history for relevant permissions and access. Review it after testing connected apps or proactive features, especially on a work-managed phone. The dashboard is an audit aid; it does not turn a cloud request into a local one or recover data already shared with a service.

Protected processing components

Google cites Private Compute Core, Private AI Compute and protected KVM as protections for ambient data and sensitive processing. These components are security boundaries, not a promise that all inference happens offline. A protected cloud path can still be cloud processing, while a local Nano operation can avoid a network request altogether.

On-device versus cloud: the practical trade-offs

Decision factor On-device Gemini Nano Cloud or hybrid Gemini
Where inference occurs On the Pixel 11 Pro through Android AICore for supported operations. On Google’s cloud infrastructure when Nano is unavailable, unsupported or insufficient.
Internet requirement Can work without reliable internet for documented local features such as Recorder summaries and TalkBack image descriptions. Requires connectivity for the cloud portion; a hybrid workflow may pause until a connection returns.
Latency Avoids a network round trip and can respond quickly when the phone has sufficient resources. Includes network latency but can use larger server-side models and compute.
Privacy locality Input and output can remain on the device for the local operation. Data is processed through Google’s cloud controls for the remote portion.
Context and capability Bounded by Nano’s token, hardware and supported-feature limits. Better suited to long context, complex requests and capabilities unavailable locally.
Agent reach Depends on the same app integrations and permissions as cloud inference. More model capacity does not create an app integration that Android or the app does not provide.
User oversight Local execution does not remove the need for app permissions or purchase confirmation. Progress indicators, confirmations and Privacy Dashboard controls still apply.

How to use the Pixel 11 Pro’s AI with fewer surprises

  1. Check that the phone is eligible. Gemini Intelligence requirements include Gemini Nano v3 or later, at least 12 GB of RAM, a qualified flagship system-on-chip and supported Android platform components. Google lists the Pixel 11 Pro among qualifying devices, but individual features can have additional language, account or regional requirements.
  2. Update the system components. Install available Android, Google Play system, AICore, Gemini and Recorder updates. Model updates can change which local features appear without changing the phone’s hardware.
  3. Test a documented offline feature. Turn on airplane mode and try a short Recorder summary or a TalkBack image description. A successful result demonstrates that that specific feature can run locally; it does not prove that Gemini Intelligence as a whole is offline.
  4. Choose connected apps deliberately. During Personal Intelligence setup, connect only the Gmail, Google Photos or Google Keep sources you actually want Gemini to use. Revisit each app’s permission screen when your needs change.
  5. Watch the automation state. For a multi-step task, use “View progress” and keep the notification chip in view. Treat a purchase, reservation or order as incomplete until you have reviewed and confirmed the final screen.
  6. Audit access afterward. Open Android Privacy Dashboard and review recent permission activity. Remove an app connection or permission if the context Gemini used was broader than intended.

Requirements and limits to keep in mind

  • Hardware and memory: Google’s stated Gemini Intelligence baseline is Nano v3 or newer, 12 GB or more of RAM, a qualifying flagship SoC and supported Android components. Meeting the baseline does not guarantee every language or feature.
  • Model scope: Local ML Kit functions are specialized. The experimental hybrid API currently describes single-turn text generation from text or one bitmap image, not unrestricted multi-turn multimodal reasoning.
  • Language and region: App integrations, automation previews and Personal Intelligence connections can vary by country, language, account type and rollout stage.
  • App participation: Agentic execution requires an AppFunctions integration or another supported automation path. Unsupported apps may allow ordinary chat but not reliable task completion.
  • Connectivity: Cloud fallbacks cannot complete while the phone has no usable connection. A local fallback may be available only for the specific feature and model version involved.
  • Resource limits: Long recordings, large prompts, noisy audio and demanding images can exceed local limits or reduce quality even when Nano is installed.

What the Kakao Mobility results do—and do not—show

An Android case study reports that Kakao Mobility saw a 45% conversion increase and a 24% reduction in order-completion time in 2026 after implementing Gemini Nano on-device. Those figures describe Kakao Mobility’s implementation and measurement, not a guaranteed result for every Pixel 11 Pro owner or every app. They illustrate why developers may choose local inference: less network waiting can make a focused interaction faster and can keep a supported request available during connectivity problems.

Common failure modes and fixes

A feature disappears when you go offline

That usually means the feature is cloud-dependent, the local model is unavailable, or the app has not implemented a Nano-capable path. Reconnect, update AICore and the relevant app, then check whether Google documents an offline mode for that exact function.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gemini asks for a connection even though the phone supports Nano

Device support is not the same as universal local routing. The request may exceed Nano’s context or capability, or the app may prefer cloud processing. Try a shorter prompt or a documented local API feature, but do not assume that forcing airplane mode will preserve the entire workflow.

An app can be opened but not controlled

Opening an app does not establish an agent integration. The developer must expose callable AppFunctions or the rollout must include compatible UI automation. Check the app’s supported-actions notice and regional availability rather than repeatedly changing permissions.

An automation pauses before completion

Review the progress view and look for a confirmation request, missing permission, sign-in challenge or network interruption. Complete only the step you recognize. If the details are wrong, cancel the task and start again with a more specific instruction.

The local summary is incomplete or inaccurate

Shorten the input, improve the recording quality or split a long document into sections. Nano’s local limits and the source quality affect the result; switching to a cloud model may provide more context but changes the data path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for Pixel 11 Pro owners

Use the Pixel 11 Pro’s on-device AI when the task is supported, bounded and privacy-sensitive: local Recorder summaries, TalkBack image descriptions and compatible ML Kit writing, speech and image functions are the clearest examples. Expect cloud or hybrid processing for requests that need larger context, broader capability or more compute. Agentic app control is governed by integrations, permissions, confirmations and rollout availability—not simply by whether Gemini Nano is installed. The safest mental model is a supervised hybrid assistant: local when the feature allows it, cloud when the job requires it, and never fully autonomous without your instruction and approval.
