A USB security key is a physical authenticator that connects to a compatible device and helps verify your identity when you sign in. It uses a supported authentication protocol—commonly FIDO U2F or FIDO2—rather than storing your password like a thumb drive. USB describes one way the key connects; it does not guarantee that the key works with every account or supports every sign-in method.
What a USB security key does
A security key proves possession of a registered physical authenticator during sign-in. In FIDO authentication, the account service registers a public key associated with its origin. When you later sign in, the security key uses its corresponding private key to create a signed response, which the service verifies. The key does not send your account password as the cryptographic proof.

FIDO U2F was designed to add a strong second factor to a password-based login. FIDO2 supports a broader range of sign-in experiences, including passwordless and multi-factor flows, depending on the key and the service. A USB key is therefore not automatically a passkey: the term “passkey” refers to a particular kind of FIDO credential and sign-in experience, not every physical key. FIDO Alliance’s U2F overview explains the second-factor design; its authentication specifications describe the wider FIDO family.

These terms describe different parts of the sign-in process, not interchangeable names for a key:

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- WebAuthn is the web API browsers and websites use to request registration or authentication with public-key credentials. Credentials can be handled by a built-in platform authenticator or an external device. The W3C WebAuthn specification describes the API.
- CTAP is the protocol family used for communication between a client and an external authenticator, such as a security key.
- CTAP1 (formerly FIDO U2F) supports a second-factor sign-in flow.
- CTAP2 supports FIDO2 authenticator features and can use USB, NFC, or Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) transports.
In a typical web sign-in with an external FIDO2 key, the browser uses WebAuthn to communicate the request and CTAP to communicate with the authenticator. Depending on the key and the service’s sign-in flow, you may need to connect the key, touch its presence sensor, enter a PIN, or complete another user-verification step. Thales describes examples of touch and PIN prompts.
What affects whether a key will work
Compatibility depends on more than whether the plug fits. The account service, browser or operating system, protocol version, connection type, and any required user-verification features must all be supported.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Service and protocol: Check which security-key standards the account accepts. For example, Microsoft says Microsoft Account requires features and extensions specific to FIDO2 CTAP2 authenticators and does not accept CTAP1 credentials. A listing that says only “FIDO” may not be specific enough; Microsoft’s security-key guidance gives this service-specific example.
- Connector or transport: Confirm that your device has the key’s USB-A or USB-C connector, or that both support another transport such as NFC. Some keys support more than one connection method.
- Authentication features: Check whether the sign-in flow requires a PIN, touch, or another verification step, and whether the key supports it.
- Account policy: For work or school accounts, an administrator may restrict accepted methods or provide the required key. Microsoft’s setup instructions for work and school accounts explain that context.
- Recovery: Follow the account provider’s current recovery guidance. There is no single recovery rule that applies to every service, so check whether you should register a spare key or configure another recovery method.
How to add and use a security key
- Open the account’s security settings and choose the option to add or register a security key. The exact menu names vary by service.
- Follow the service’s prompts to connect or tap the key and, if requested, touch its sensor or complete a PIN or other user-verification step.
- At a later sign-in, choose the security-key option if prompted, then connect or tap the registered key and follow the on-screen instructions.
The service determines which key types it accepts, and organization policies can change the available options. For a work or school account, follow your administrator’s directions if they differ from the general account flow.
What to check when choosing a key
- The FIDO protocol version and features required by the accounts you use.
- Whether you need USB-A, USB-C, NFC, or more than one transport.
- Whether your intended sign-in method requires a PIN or touch-based user verification.
- The account provider’s guidance for registering a backup or setting up recovery.
As one example of a multi-transport FIDO2 key, Google lists its Titan Security Key with USB-A or USB-C and NFC options. Model variants and availability can change; check the current Google Store listing for its stated details. No single connector or product description establishes compatibility with every account.
