You’ll need owner or admin access to the GitHub repository.
What this setup does
Discord provides a destination URL for a webhook associated with a selected server text channel. GitHub sends repository event data to the URL configured for a repository webhook. For this documented integration, Discord specifies adding /github to the webhook URL and using JSON payloads. No separate receiver that you operate is part of this direct setup.

This is for repository push events, not a way to configure an individual user’s personal GitHub notification feed. Discord describes webhooks as a way to send code merge or push updates into a server text channel. Discord’s webhook overview and GitHub’s webhook overview explain the services’ roles.

Set up the Discord webhook
- In Discord, open the server’s Server Settings > Integrations.
- Create a webhook, choose the text channel where you want repository updates, and optionally give the webhook a name.
- Copy the webhook URL. Keep it private: it is the destination URL used to post messages to that channel.
Discord’s Intro to Webhooks documents the GitHub connection and the URL suffix required for its formatting. The Server Integrations Page describes the server’s integration settings.

Add the webhook to your GitHub repository
- Open the target repository and go to Settings > Webhooks > Add webhook. You need repository owner or admin access to create a repository webhook.
- Paste the Discord URL into Payload URL, then append
/githubto the end of that URL. - Set Content type to
application/json. - Choose Just the push event if you only want push updates. Subscribe to other events only if you specifically need them.
- Save the webhook.
GitHub sends a ping event after webhook creation as a setup confirmation. That confirms the webhook configuration was created; it does not establish that every later Discord message will render as expected. See GitHub’s webhook creation instructions and Discord’s GitHub integration instructions.
Check deliveries if updates do not appear
Open the repository’s webhook settings and inspect its recent deliveries. A failed delivery is not automatically sent again by GitHub, so a failed push notification may require manual recovery. GitHub explains delivery behavior in Using webhooks.

- Confirm the Payload URL contains the Discord URL followed by
/github. - Check that the selected event includes pushes and that the webhook is attached to the repository where the push occurred.
- Verify that the chosen Discord channel is the intended destination and that the webhook remains configured there.
- If a delivery failed, use GitHub’s delivery details to diagnose it; do not assume the creation ping tested later message rendering.
Limits and access to keep in mind
GitHub allows up to 20 repository webhooks subscribing to each individual event type, according to its webhook types documentation. Discord’s Server Integrations Page states a maximum of 50 integrations per server. These are platform limits, not requirements for this setup. Interface labels and limits can change.
