It was not an ink cartridge for a plotter. In the HP 8510C analyzer setup, the cartridge let the printer turn those commands into a drawing and print the page.
What the name means
The phrase refers to a printer cartridge that provided HP-GL emulation. HP-GL is a language for describing plotted drawings; the cartridge allowed a compatible laser printer to process those commands. The HP 8510C Operating and Programming Manual describes the result this way: “The cartridge essentially turns the laser printer into a plotter.” The manual is hosted by MIT TJR Lab.

This is different from an ink cartridge used by a plotter, or from ink cartridges in later inkjet plotters. Here, “cartridge” means a printer accessory that supplied HP-GL command handling.

Some laser printers could already emulate HP-GL, but the HP 8510C manual says they needed a special escape sequence to switch into that mode. The analyzer could not send that sequence, so its documented setup required the cartridge. The printer received the HP-GL commands, formed the drawing in its own memory, and printed it. This requirement applies to the described HP 8510C setup; it does not mean every printer with HP-GL capability needed a cartridge.

Which printer models the manual lists
| Cartridge edition | LaserJet models listed by the HP 8510C manual |
|---|---|
| Standard | HP LaserJet Series II |
| Personal Edition (P.E.) | HP LaserJet IIP, IID, III, and IIID |
These are compatibility details for the manual’s historical setup, not a guarantee of compatibility with other printers. The available evidence does not establish that the two editions were interchangeable. Check the exact printer model and cartridge edition before attempting to use one.

A 1989 HP Professional report described features including adjustable pen or line thickness, X- and Y-axis scaling, arcs and circles, rotation, fill and shading patterns, and paper sizing. These are historical product descriptions, not a current specification sheet. The April 1989 issue also reported a $395 list price at the time; that figure is not a current value.

A 1990 HP Professional article said the product offered capabilities associated with HP 7475A and 7550A plotters on certain LaserJet models. It described 20 black pens with user-defined widths and noted that the cartridge required additional printer memory. Memory needs were model-specific, so the article does not support one universal memory requirement. The December 1990 issue listed a historical advertised price of $395.
The same 1990 article reported an imaging-speed claim of up to 150 meters per second. That is a period product claim, not a verified operating rate for every printer or configuration. A 1989 Pacific Data Products advertisement in BYTE promoted up to 99 copies and 1/300-inch resolution; those, too, are vendor advertising claims rather than independent benchmarks. The April 1989 issue preserves the advertisement.

What to keep in mind today
- The term identifies an HP-GL emulation accessory for specific laser printers, not a plotter ink cartridge.
- The HP 8510C manual documents the Standard and P.E. versions for different LaserJet models.
- Historical feature lists, prices, speed statements, and memory notes do not establish current performance, availability, or price.
- No current stock, condition, or market price is established by the cited historical sources.
