A flashlight’s strobe mode flashes repeatedly instead of shining a steady beam. It can help signal your location, mark a place, or draw attention in an emergency. Some manufacturers also describe fast strobe as a tactical feature meant to disorient a potential attacker, but that intended use is not proof that it reliably stops an attack.
What does strobe mode do?
Strobe mode switches the light on and off in a repeating pattern. The flash rate and available controls vary by device. For example, Garmin’s GPSMAP 66i Owner’s Manual, version 10 (August 2024), lists settings from 1 to 9 strobes per second. That range applies to the GPSMAP 66i, not to flashlights generally.

The repeated flashes can make a light easier to notice than a steady beam in some situations. Browning describes using strobe to signal, mark a location in the woods to return to, or help someone find you. Pelican describes the strobe on its 2360 flashlight as intended for tactical or signaling purposes, while Energizer presents strobe as an emergency feature. These are manufacturers’ descriptions of intended uses, not independent evidence of how effective strobe is in a particular situation.
When might you use a flashlight strobe?
To signal or attract attention
If you need another person to notice your location, repeated flashes may draw attention. Use the pattern and brightness your device allows, and make sure the person you are trying to reach knows what to look for when possible.

To mark a location
A flashing light can help identify a spot you plan to return to, such as a location in the woods. Keep in mind that a strobe does not transmit your coordinates or guarantee that anyone will see it.
As a stated tactical feature
Some manufacturers describe fast strobe as a way to disorient a potential attacker. Treat that as a claimed purpose, not a dependable defense or a substitute for getting away and contacting emergency services when you can.

Is strobe the same as SOS?
No. A regular strobe repeatedly flashes; an SOS setting uses a particular emergency signal pattern. Garmin labels SOS as an “Emergency strobe” on the GPSMAP 66i, but labels and functions differ between devices. Check your flashlight’s manual to confirm whether it offers SOS and what its pattern means.

What should you know about battery use?
Using a flashlight, including its strobe, can reduce battery life. Garmin’s GPSMAP 66i manual says that lowering brightness or flash frequency can extend battery life. Its D2 Mach 2 manual says a slow blink can have less impact on battery life than other strobe settings. The actual runtime and battery cost depend on the device and setting; do not assume one model’s figures apply to another.

Flashing lights can trigger photosensitive seizures in some people. Energizer warns that a person may be affected even without a known history of seizures. Garmin’s fēnix 7 Series Owner’s Manual advises: “Consult your physician if you have epilepsy or are sensitive to bright or flashing lights.” If you or someone nearby is sensitive to flashing lights, avoid using strobe around them.

Check your flashlight before relying on it
- Read the manual to learn how to activate and stop strobe, and whether a separate SOS pattern is available.
- Check whether the flash rate or brightness can be adjusted and what the manual says about battery use in those modes.
- Do not rely on a flashlight pattern alone to summon help unless the device’s instructions specifically confirm that it contacts assistance or emergency services.
