Usually, no: a routine blackout does not by itself mean your TV is ruined. The greater electrical concerns are abnormal voltage, power fluctuations when electricity returns, and lightning. If your TV will not turn on, check its power source and connections before assuming the set has failed.
When an outage can put a TV at risk
A loss of power is not the same thing as electrical damage. A TV that goes dark during a blackout may simply be off because there is no electricity; if it stays off afterward, the cause could still be the outlet, cord, or a connected power accessory rather than the television itself. Sony recommends resolving a brownout, blackout, or temporary loss of power before troubleshooting a no-power symptom (Sony support).

The hazards manufacturers identify are power fluctuations or abnormal voltage and current—not every ordinary outage. Lightning is one source of abnormal electrical activity: it can affect a TV through its power outlet or attached antenna wiring. Sony’s specific guidance on power returning after an outage warns about connected soundbar and home theater systems; it does not establish that every TV is damaged when electricity is restored (Sony UK guidance).
What to do if the TV will not turn on after power returns
- Verify power at the outlet. Confirm household power has returned, then test the outlet with another device. Sony recommends trying a known-working outlet and checking the TV’s AC cord (Sony support).
- Check the TV’s power cord. Make sure it is firmly seated at the wall and, if it is removable, at the TV. Do not use a cord that is visibly damaged (Sony; TCL).
- Bypass accessories temporarily. Connect the TV directly to a known-working wall outlet, temporarily removing a power strip, surge protector, extension cord, or smart plug from the path. A power accessory can itself be the source of a no-power problem, according to Sony and TCL (Sony; TCL).
- Try the TV’s physical power button. If that works but the remote does not, the problem may be with the remote rather than the TV. If the set remains unresponsive, follow the reset instructions for your exact model. Reset timing differs: Sony says to unplug the TV for at least 30 seconds, while TCL’s Google TV guidance says at least 60 seconds and, if available, to hold the TV’s physical button. Use your manufacturer’s instructions rather than treating either timing as universal (Sony; TCL).
- Disconnect external devices while troubleshooting. Remove connected devices and retry using the model’s recommended reset process. The exact procedure depends on the TV model and software; consult its manual or manufacturer support page.
When to stop troubleshooting
Unplug the TV and stop using it if you notice smoke, sparks, a burning smell, liquid inside the set, or visible damage. TCL gives this stop-use advice in its troubleshooting guidance (TCL support). If there is an electrical hazard, do not touch the plug or cord until it is safe to do so.

Fire-resistant ABS shell (1382℉), and high-quality component can improve durability and safety. For your safety, ensure that the current power DO NOT exceed the rated power of 1875W/15A, or it may cause short circuit and fire explode hazards
If there are no immediate danger signs but the TV remains unresponsive, its indicator flashes abnormally, or it repeatedly shuts off or makes unusual electrical sounds, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider. These symptoms warrant help; they do not, on their own, prove that the outage ruined the set.
How to protect a TV during a thunderstorm
If lightning is forecast, Sony recommends turning off the TV and disconnecting both its power cord and attached external cables, such as antenna, HDMI, and LAN cables. LG also advises unplugging the television when thunderstorms or lightning are forecast (Sony UK; LG).

A plain power strip gives you extra outlets; it is not necessarily designed to protect equipment from surges. A genuine surge protector is intended to protect connected devices against voltage spikes, but it should not be treated as a guarantee against lightning damage. Los Angeles County’s emergency preparedness guide includes televisions among electronics for which it recommends surge protectors; Trane Home distinguishes surge protection from the extra outlet capacity of an ordinary strip (Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management; Trane Home).

| Option | What it does | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary power strip | Adds outlets for connected equipment. | Surge protection is not inherent; an ordinary strip should not be assumed to protect a TV from spikes. |
| Surge protector | Is intended to protect connected electronics against spikes or surges. | It does not guarantee protection from every electrical event, including a direct lightning event. |
| Unplugging before forecast lightning | Disconnecting power and attached signal cables reduces the TV’s connection to possible lightning-related electrical paths. | It is a precaution to take before lightning begins, only when safe—not a step to attempt during thunder. |
Choose a genuine surge protector suited to the equipment and installation, and do not overload power strips. LG advises replacing damaged or blackened outlets and cords (LG electrical safety guidance). The cited guidance does not establish a universal joule rating or identify a model that guarantees safety.
