The developer’s pinned Steam checklist includes closing a leftover nw.js process, launching game.exe directly, testing administrator mode, moving the game folder, updating graphics drivers, restarting and reinstalling. None is guaranteed to fix every system, so note where the failure occurs and change one thing at a time.
First identify where the failure happens
“Crashing” can describe several different problems: Steam returns to the Play button without opening a window, the game window appears and closes, the failure follows the Kwalee screen, a particular save will not load, or the game opens but runs slowly. Those symptoms point to different checks. Before changing anything, record the last screen you saw and the exact text of any error.

Welcome to Elderfield is a Windows PC game released on Steam on September 10, 2026. Steam lists Chris Cote as developer and Kwalee as publisher. The guidance below is for the Steam release; the developer’s save-folder advice applies only to a specific Patreon-alpha save migration, not ordinary Steam crashes.
Try these eight checks in order
1. Make sure Steam has installed the latest game update
In Steam, check the game’s Downloads status and let any queued update finish. Restart Steam, then restart the PC and try again. Updates can change which older workarounds apply. The September 22, 2026 update notes describe a potential fix for a crash when unlocking an achievement while the Steam connection has failed; that is a specific case, not evidence that every crash is resolved.

2. Check for a leftover game process
- Close the game and open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Look for a remaining
nw.jsprocess associated with the game. - If one is still running after the game has closed, select it and choose End task, then try launching again.
The developer includes ending a stuck nw.js process in the pinned Steam launch-issues discussion. Do not end unrelated processes.
3. Start the packaged executable directly
In the Steam library, right-click Welcome to Elderfield and open Manage > Browse local files. In the game folder, try opening game.exe directly. The developer specifically recommends this check to help distinguish a Steam launch handoff problem from a failure inside the game’s own startup. If Windows shows an error, keep its exact wording for a report rather than guessing at the cause.

4. Test administrator mode
From the game’s install folder, right-click game.exe and choose Run as administrator for one test. If that changes the result, note it; the developer lists this as a troubleshooting check, not a requirement to run the game this way permanently.
5. Test a simpler game-folder location
The developer’s checklist also suggests moving the game folder to the desktop and trying to launch it there. Treat this as a temporary diagnostic test, not a permanent installation instruction. If the game does not launch from the moved folder, restore it through Steam’s normal library management rather than leaving multiple copies that could be confused.

6. Update your graphics driver
Install an available graphics-driver update using the update method provided by Windows or your graphics-card manufacturer, then restart and try the game again. The developer recommends current graphics drivers but does not specify a particular utility or driver version.
7. Restart before reinstalling
If the earlier checks do not help, restart the PC once more, then use Steam’s uninstall and install controls to reinstall the game. This is a later step in the developer’s checklist, not a guaranteed fix. Do not combine a reinstall with deleting AppData or other user folders; those are separate actions with different data risks.

8. Handle save and AppData workarounds only when they fit
The developer discusses removing a save folder only for players migrating a Patreon-alpha save when the save-fixing process itself may prevent launch. That advice should not be applied to a normal Steam crash or a save that is not part of that migration.

Before moving or deleting anything in AppData or the game’s install folder, make a copy somewhere safe. User data and save progress are not interchangeable; if you cannot identify which folder contains your progress, stop rather than deleting it. The developer’s thread is the primary source for the exact checklist and the limited save-migration context.

What not to change without a specific reason
- Do not replace NW.js runtime files or add launch flags as a first-line fix. Community posts discuss these ideas, but the thread also includes a report that replacing the runtime did not help and that Steam file verification restored the original files. The available evidence does not establish runtime replacement as a reliable fix.
- Do not uninstall Citrix just because a game crashes. Some users in the Steam discussion connect Citrix DLL remnants with launch trouble, and one reports success after uninstalling Citrix. These are anecdotal reports, not a developer-confirmed general cause. If you use or recently removed Citrix, mention that detail when reporting the issue; avoid removing work software without a reason.
- Do not infer a crash rate from reviews or forum posts. The available sources do not establish a reliable percentage of affected PC players or a success rate for any individual fix.
If the game still will not launch
Post a concise report in the game’s Steam discussion and include the details that help separate a launch failure from a save or performance issue:
- Installed game version and Windows version
- Graphics card and driver version
- The last screen shown and the exact error, if any
- Whether the crash affects one save or every launch
- Which single troubleshooting step you tried and what changed
Changing one thing at a time makes the result more useful and avoids unnecessary data loss.
