Use Samsung Smart Switch to move data from your old Galaxy phone to your new one. For a straightforward transfer without accessories, choose wireless; if you prefer a direct connection, use a compatible cable and any required adapter. On the old phone, select Send; on the new phone, select Receive, then follow the prompts shown on your devices.
Before you start
- Open Smart Switch on both phones. It is included on many Galaxy devices; if it is missing, download it for your device.
- Make sure both phones have enough free storage for the items you plan to move. Samsung’s UK Android-transfer FAQ states a minimum of 500 MB of free internal storage on each device; your phone’s prompts are the best guide for your specific transfer.
- If you plan to transfer by cable, check the phones’ connectors and cable compatibility. Depending on the models, you may need an adapter.
How to transfer wirelessly with Smart Switch
- Open Smart Switch on both phones.
- On the old phone, choose Send from this phone. On the new phone, choose Receive on this phone.
- Choose Wireless and complete the connection steps shown on the phones.
- Review the content categories Smart Switch offers, select what you want to move, and start the transfer.
- Wait until the transfer completes before finishing the setup.
Samsung’s US instructions suggest keeping the phones within four inches of each other and plugged into chargers during a wireless transfer. Treat that as Samsung’s setup guidance, not a guarantee of transfer time or performance. Samsung describes wireless transfers as its preferred way to copy data to a new device.

How to transfer by cable
- Connect the phones using a compatible data cable. Use an adapter if your phone models and cable connectors require one.
- Open Smart Switch if it does not open automatically, then follow any connection prompt.
- Choose Send on the old phone and Receive on the new phone.
- Select the categories you want to transfer and start the process.
- Keep the cable connected until the transfer is complete. Do not disconnect it while data is moving.
Samsung’s UK Android-transfer FAQ says a wired transfer requires support for the USB “Transferring media files (MTP)” option. Exact compatibility depends on the phones and their prompts.
Which transfer method should you choose?
| Method | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless Smart Switch | You want to transfer without a cable or adapter. | Keep the phones close together; Samsung’s US guidance suggests no more than four inches and recommends charging both phones. |
| Wired Smart Switch | You prefer a direct cable connection or already have compatible equipment. | Confirm cable and connector compatibility, and whether an adapter is needed. Leave the cable connected until the transfer finishes. |
| Computer backup and restore | You want to make a computer backup before restoring data to the new phone. | This route requires a computer and USB connection. Follow the current Smart Switch instructions for your computer and devices. |
Samsung identifies wireless as its preferred method, but its support guidance does not establish that it will be faster for every pair of phones or every amount of data.

What Smart Switch can move
Depending on the connected devices, Smart Switch may offer contacts, schedule, messages, photos, videos, music, call logs, documents, and other categories. Samsung marks some items—including voice memos, alarm settings, home- and lock-screen images, Wi-Fi settings, email settings, and app data—as Galaxy-device-only in its guidance.
Do not assume every account, app, setting, or file will transfer. Supported items can vary by device, so review the actual selection screen on your phones before starting.

If Smart Switch or a transfer option is missing
- Smart Switch is not on one phone: Download the app for that device, then reopen it on both phones.
- A category is not offered: Availability depends on the connected devices. Transfer the categories Smart Switch presents.
- The cable connection does not work: Check that the cable supports data, confirm the phones’ connectors and any adapter, and look for the phone’s USB media-transfer prompt.
- The screens do not match these labels: Menu names and paths vary by model and region. Follow the Send/Receive flow and the on-screen instructions for your phones.
Make a computer backup instead
Smart Switch also supports backing up data to a computer and restoring it to the new phone. This is an alternative when you want a backup step before setting up the new device; it requires a computer and USB connection. Use Samsung’s current Smart Switch computer instructions for the device-specific steps.
